After using this update now for the past 30 hours or so, (except for when I was sleeping), I have put it pretty heavily through the paces for what I do. Photoshop, Pages, Office, Safari, Calendar, Mail, Dashboard, Expose, iLife, etc. I am very pleased with this update. I really have never had big issues with Tiger that ever had me thinking of remaining with Panther. And I use my PB at work.

I don't put hacks on my machines, stay away from themes, run regular maintenance, etc. It's always difficult to determine the variety of experiences showing up here, just as always occurs after an update.

Though I understand that the soft (and the OS) for PPC is not a priority for Apple any more, I have to admit that I’m just stunned by the fact that in all this time they are still not able to correct all the obvious bugs in Tiger, as for example in mail.app. How many people work actually on the soft for PPC at Apple? Like 3,5? Now mail.app resembles something like the Thunderbird in the early stage of it’s development (first public beta or so). The Dashboard widget manager is great? Quite a news for kids, I admit… But once again, I’m just shocked by Apple selling such a buggy OS (after a good Panther), which is more a beta then something else, and then in all these months they still couldn’t manage to squeeze all bugs out of it. What to say about the attitude of the third-party soft makers for PPC? The future of the PPC soft is pretty clear. Sad.

Just installed, now I have to start my uptime all over again due to the two updates released today. I hope I can beat my record
My uptime record is from the time this bad boy came in the mail, to the time tiger was released. Once, the power went out, and I put it to sleep. Ran off of my UPS for something like 16 hours. Oh, It came in the mail last september.

D'oh!!! My system got totally f'd up after the install.. it just freezes on the startup. Doing an Archive & Install now ;Q ..Hope everything goes well or I will be totally pissed.

This was the first time this happened to me. Oh well, it had to happen some day I guess.

A Bugs Life

Reading various posts about the new version 10.4.2 shows, that there are still some
essential bugs, e.g. in Mail!!

That is no good sign for the future of the OS, because, it indicates, that some people are
pressuring the developers to put out unfinished stuff. Also, there seems to be a shift in taste,
what the GUI is concerned.

Probably, 10.4.2 should have been the first version to be distributed. I think it is not only
IBM that did not provide the expected parts Apple (customers) was waiting for. Recently
Apple is not able to live up to the high expectations anymore customers are demanding
from its software.

What comes next, (by extrapolation)?

OS 10.2 Jaguar
OS 10.3 Panther
OS 10.4 Bug
OS 10.5 XP

I knew this was going to happen. I'm no longer a Select ADC member, but before my subscription expired, I installed build 8C40, thinking it was going to be the final for 10.4.2. Of course, it wasn't. Now I can't access the revisioner I need to allow 10.4.2 to install. Are there any paying ADC members out the that can give me the 8C40 revisioner?

TIA!

Can you just download the update from Apple's support site? Twice as large but it would probably work...

On my current generation Powerbook G4 12-inch, when I go to my name in the upper hand corner of the screen and select, "Login Window," then from the login menu when I select "sleep," it wakes back up after 3-4 seconds, but the second time I push "sleep," it goes to sleep for good. This began for me after 10.4.1. Does anyone else have this happen? :( It doesn't do it, if I put it to sleep without going to the login window, but I like to go to the login window.

I was really hoping 10.4.2 would fix this, but no :(

Why do you do this? If it is for the security, you can have the computer prompt for a password when it wakes from sleep. Or enable the Keychain menu bar applet and select Lock Screen from it.

I installed 10.4.2 via Software Update and restarted. During restart, I held down CMD-S so I could do a "fsck -fy". Found two "illegal names" and several temp files that had filesizes other than 0. It fixed the files, rechecked, said all was well, so I typed "reboot" and OS X proceeded to boot.

This seems to indicate that the temp files modified on my first installation were vital to restoring the menubar icons. After they were "fixed," the menubar icons vanished. Since I cannot uninstall 10.4.2, it would appear I have no choice but to reinstall 10.4 and all the updates again on my first machine.

Should have restarted completely before the disk check. OS X needed to restore data from those temp files most likely, and you trashed them. Nice!

Next time just restart completely and then start up off of your Tiger DVD, and choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. Repair the disk from here. Safer methinks. Repair permissions from your standard OS X install... not the DVD. Makes more issues if you go from DVD.

Not sure if it was the 10.4.2 update or what but suddenly my iPod now looks like an iPod again. I'd tried resetting it to defaults using the iPod updater, even after flashing it for Podcasts, nothing it looked like a boring disk image.

Now it looks like an iPod again. Yay, my icon anal retentativeness is complete.

Plus if something was updated in .4.2 or some other point release the install DVD/CD won't know what the heck it is and could bork something too.

Do you not have Applecare? I've always wondered if something borks like that when you call for help what happens. They've been helpful for me and it was just stupid disk corruption because my son found the surge protector (20 months old) and turned it off while I was mid-Warcraft at the time. They were pretty helpful.

Did 10.4.2 break the apple-space spotlight shortcut for anyone else? It's enabled in both the spotlight and keyboard/mouse preference panes, yet, it stopped working.

According to MacFixit, other people are having the same problem. The fix was just to let it go....Like 30 mins or so....Then it goes to your login screen or Desktop.

FYI

If you have more than one keyboard layout enabled, command-space is also used to switch between those. You can check this in the keyboard shortcuts section of the system preferences and change one or the other to avoid the conflict.

Slightly true. This is why you don't repair permissions from the disk. But the disk-check is the same for Tiger all around. The Panther one would work, too, but would screw a HFSX volume over.

It is just fsck with some tweaks, AFAIK.

For turning on Quartz2DExtreme by default i have used the Terminal-app with this command : sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver \Quartz2DExtremeEnabled -boolean YES

Anyone here at the forum with the same experience as me ?
I'll find out tonight. My GFFX 5200 Go might not keep up.

FWIW, even without Q2DE, my XBench scores were WAY up in the UI and Quartz departments over 10.4.1 and better yet, if I click and drag a scroll bar, it doesn't stall out...it stay right with my mouse, very much like OS 9 used to do. I think Apple's doing some serious UI responsiveness work under the hood right now.

This is the update I'd been waiting for to intall Tiger at all.

Installed Tiger at home and updated everything. Had a little trouble getting my wireless connection running, but it appears to be okay now. Great! I'll install it at work...

Not compatible with my network and Netware won't work anymore (fix in late summer?)... ugh... back to 10.3.9....

Bug On the AE AirTunes!

After installing it, my itunes plays intermittently then I need to restart the song again. Does anybody exprience this?

Just out of curiosity, what's with all the voodoo magic people do wiht fsck'ing disks when/after installing the update? Seems to me like you're over-thinking the situation...I have never had problems (aside from bugs) with an OS X install that I didn't create myself.

Not a good idea, in my experience: both times I installed Tiger I did this, and ended up with a whole string of messages about ports not being synchronised, or something like that. I think the fsck routine interrupted the OS linking everything up. Don't do it...

This has been a problem since the AP Express and Airtunes came out--not Tiger specific.

Check out the Apple discussions at apple.com. There is no perfect fix, but there are a lot of ideas you can try which may fix it for you.
