Replicable Safari Crash Problem

TiBookG4/5 said:
Safari is still not problem free in OS 10.4.2. I still am experiencing unexpected quits when trying to load certain pages. (For example: http://www.gradolabs.com then click the headphones link to open http://gradolabs.com/frameset_hdpns.htm) You should experience an unexpected quit using OS 10.4.2 and Safari Version 2.0 (412.2).

Annoying to say the least.
I can confirm the Safari crash following the same path on my dual 2.5 G5 with 10.4.2 and 412.2 Safari. :(

Single sign-on. (see it in my original title)

What are the details of single sign-on....???? It is mentioned in the original article, but I find nothing on Apple's site referencing it.
Apple have two things that might be called SSO. First is the Keychain facility, that anyone can use. Second is Kerberos, which requires that your machine lives on a network configured to use it.

I Don't Understand NightShift

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I'm using the latest WebKit builds thanks to NightShift and the page opens perfectly fine. I tried opening it in a new tab and new window without any problems.
I don't understand NightShift. I read what it says in the application. I still don't get it. Can you explain it in lay person's terms?

strange thing:
yesterday i was lucky with the isync update, mobile sonyericsson k750i finally works. but today after the os update, it doesn't work again.

anyone with the same prob?

I had just the opposite experience this week. I was unable to do a Bluetooth sync between iSync and my Motorola Razr V3 with 10.4.1 and iSync 2.0. I updated iSync to 2.1 and still no go.

After installing 10.4.2 last night, the Bluetooth sync between iSync and the phone works.

Updated to 10.4.2, so far so good :)

I saw something while installing 10.4.2 that I haven't noticed before.

As usual, the progress bar gradually moved from 0% toward 100%, reaching the "Finishing Installation" step at 99%, just a sliver before the end of the progress bar. But then it jumped back to about 95% as the message changed to "Optimizing System Performance". I've seen it get to 99% and then take a long time to clean up and finally finish, but I haven't seen the progress bar take such a leap backwards before.

Happened to me as well. Just a couple pixel remaining for the progress bar then it jumps back to about 95% then finished up.

I'm having the same issues.......My PB is running hotter than normal and with only dashboard and safari open is using 758 of 768 ram.

I must be the only one who had problems with the update. My
powerbook is now useless.
The SystemUIServer process has gone mad.... it's pegging the cpu to 99%+ and it's
gobbling up all the memory!!! The whole laptop gets really hot after a few minutes of
running! Noone else ran into this problem?

Looks like I might have to re-install tiger (or ydl!!!)
:( :( :(

Use Activity Monitor to see if you have any processes running wild. SystemUIServer
was taking up all the cpu cycles and memory in my pb. I get the spinning pizza when
I put the mouse pointer over the spotlight icon also...

Anyone have any ideas before I re-install?

H.264 playback is much improved here.
But it still suffers from the unsaturated, pale look. Something to do with Core Video I believe. Need update soon.

Hmm, mine is back at Panther heat levels after seeming much hotter under Tiger.

On the downside, after installing 10.4.2, half of my menu bar beachballed when i woke it from sleep and I had to log-out for it to recognise my Airport. :(

I don't have Core Video as of yet, but I should be able to tell you what it's like on mine tomorrow, when my Radeon 9800 gets here.

About a month ago Apple released Safari's rendering core's 'WebKit' as open source code. You can now download/change/compile Webkit. NightShift automatically downloads the newest nightly build that is still in development and not quite ready for prime time. While there are some bugs it is much faster and renders much better. NightShift will create a Webkit app in your app folder. It is just like safari, all your bookmarks, history are there but the rendering core is vastly improved.
Check out this page for more info.
If you do download it check out the Acid Test with both Safari and Webkit. Notice the difference? ;)

Nothing running wild, no beachballs for me. Everytime I open my PB up it's something new. My wireless connection is going crazy right now. I sit right next to the connection and get 1 bar, I go upstairs to he farthest point away possible and get 4 bars. Weird?

Please someone help.... I did the update on my 15' PB 1.5ghz it finished... then it said restart now.. I said ok...... like 15min later it still had not rebooted so I went into the menu and selected restart.. it rebooted... but now it is stuck on the gray screen with the apple logo... it will not boot or get past that point.... I went into open firmware and reset-nvram set-defaults and reset-all... still a no go!!! HELP!!!

Can anyone search for invisible files/folders?

Well, I've read through the entire thread and haven't seen my issue, so I'll ask. Back in Panther, I was running Norton Utilities, and while waiting to upgrade to Tiger I read that it was incompatible with Tiger. So, I ran the Norton Uninstaller to remove it and rebooted. Upon reboot, I got the Norton Compatibility Check dialog, so I did a search for additional pieces of Norton/Symantec and found some. I also found some invisible Norton/Symantec files that I manually trashed.

That resolved, I moved on to Tiger. I'd read in one of the forums that someone had noticed that he couldn't do a Find on invisible files/folders, so I tried it and confirmed I couldn't either. I expected 10.4.2 to resolve this glitch. It doesn't appear it has.

Can any of you confirm this issue still exists, and it's not my Mac's installation? I tested searching for "Contents" folders, since every application has one, and Spotlight returned zero items.

Thanks...

i'm not going to read this entire thread but i did install 10.4.2 this morning and everything's fine. However I think the widget manager, although a nice widget is pretty much useless. i'm sure it's small and whatnot, but why not just put it as an independent widget download? I just can't see why I would want it. Well, if this has been stated previously sorry :p

That's my only isssue with the install.

Did Apple change the widget animation when you refresh them? They seem to go supernova.

well guys I seem to have been trouble free with 10.4.2 thus far <touches wood> :D Infact im very happy with safari now!

Lost all sound

Since I upgraded I seemed to have lost all sound as far as some websites are concerned and on anything that needs WMP to play. Anybody else have this problem? Is there a way to fix it? Doesn't matter if I am using Safari or Firefox, I am still lacking sound on many website videos and on all WMP files.

Also, it looks like anything that has to use Macromedia Flash is all messed up as well with no sound.

Yes, I noticed it the first time, but since no one else has responded, I don't think I'm the only one who doesn't understand what it is that you want to know. So please help us help you....

From Apple's description:

- single sign-on authentication and reliable access to Active Directory servers

Do you have an Active Directory that supports SSO? Did you try it and it didn't work? Or do you just want to know what SSO is? If the latter, this is the page you want at Apple: link.

Does that help at all?

Just installed the 10.4.2 update. And personally, I think it's awesome. I'm so happy that they finally came around to the widget manager. And the process of installing new widgets is SO much better now... The way you can play around with the widget before you decide to keep it or delete it is awesome. And I'm so glad they tweaked the scrolling in Safari, it's much better now!

Bravo, Apple!

Could try, but I only installed Norton after this problem started. They shouldn't be related
Man, listen to the crowd. Get rid of Norton. Every last little drop. You will be better for it.
