UPS versus Fedex?

Has anyone discerned a difference between shippers, in their success at getting un-Shanghai-ed?

I returned an available-in-store MBP and ordered a replacement on April 18. Received shipping notification today: it's supposedly in Fedex's hands, and will be dellivered April 27. I'm thinking the delivery date is just their standard expectation, and not customized for the natural disaster.

Meanwhile, most posts here reference UPS...??

"A service update will be posted on www.ups.com this afternoon. Please be patient."

Let me guess. Something along the lines: "We have resumed normal operations and are doing everything in our power to deliver all shipments to their eagerly waiting consignees. As you must appreciate, the events beyond our control have disrupted all transportation in Europe and it may take several days for the delivery times to return to the high level of punctuality UPS customers expect. Thank you for your understanding. Love, UPS."

That's about the level of precision they can give at the moment, don't expect any specific details. We know their planes started flying, that's good enough for a service update.

This is so annoying, I have a serial number I have had an invoice since the 19th and my debit card billed. But no update, I am going to buy some cakes from the bakery and when I get back I am getting on the phone to apple.

I'm expecting the same - a very political statement that gives no hints or guarantees whatsoever but ensures people that they aren't just twiddling their thumbs. What we all actually WANT is a detailed summary of what airports they operate at are now operational, what order they are dealing with the backlog in, and some decent shipping status updates for us all. I'm getting real sick of "natural disaster".

@ups_europe says...

Next UPS Service Update on service disruption resulting from volcanic eruption expected at 15:00 CET today.

I'm so annoyed. Airspace is open now, after days of silence planes rush over my house making a hell of a noise again. Seeing all these planes (Airbus A380 an hour ago. Gigantic!) but not seeing any progress on my UPS tracking page (latest update is still origin scan on the 19th) really sucks. I want my MBP asap!

Just got off the phone with Apple, They are quoting me the 27th for delivery.

This sounds about right considering the current situation...
I doubt the MBP's will be in China for much longer....

Tony

so guarantee usually starts the day you receive your invoice? (17th for me)
But you asked them and they postponed it 10 days?

I guess then it's time to call Apple to "get my guarantee back" ?!

Hi,

New to macs and new to the forums here. I've been following this thread but decided to stop lurking.

What really frustrates me about this whole thing is the not knowing. Everybody understands that things have been held up. If UPS could just keep us regularly posted as to what is actually happening, rather than the fob-off lines they come out with, then I wouldn't be half so annoyed.

I suppose really though that the only thing holding everything up now is whether they have the planes in Shanghai or whether they're somewhere else.

Found this on one of the Twitter pages...made me smile. Yes, I'm going to hell :D

Completely agree with this. UPS need to be more transparent with their info.

I haven't had an invoice yet. Can anybody confirm WHEN the guarantee starts from? Because otherwise everybody here is having 1-2 weeks shaved off their guarantee. I know it's not apple's fault, but I wonder if they'd make an exception given the circumstances.

Not sure about transparent, seems like they haven't even got a clue themselves?!!

Then why can't they admit that? If they admitted that things were chaotic and they were doing their best, I wouldn't mind. If they admitted that it was going to take time while planes, runways and airspace is cleared for them, I wouldn't mind. All they do though is say "be patient" and then treat us like idiots.

Update On Ups

Looks like UPS has updated the website:

http://www.ups.com/content/gb/en/about/news/service_updates/20100415_iceland_volcano.html

edit:
Looks like things will be getting back to normal, and flights will be zinging around tonight. Lets just cross our fingers that the flights will have all of our MBPs seeking a home!

It says that two planes are going over to asia today, (I assume they're the ones people have talked about seeing earlier in the thread). Hopefully these same planes will be coming back again soon!

When I orderd my macbook pro on the 14th I also opted for apple care and then as of 18th I recived an e-mail telling me this is my apple care certificate!!

I dont even have a tracking number yet!!!

However it does say delivary on time (??) and mentions the 26th so just wait and see.

When I finally get my shiny new macbook pro then I'll have a word with jobs(I wish) someone over the phone.
