I am thin and have thin fingers. I couldn't believe how small the keys were and I couldn't type anything accurately not to mention how slow typing was without any type of auto-correction! The keyboard has been the BIGGEST failure of the Pre in MANY reviews.

I can type 70 words per minute on my iPhone 3G and when I first got it it took me about 30 minutes to get to that level of typing!

I think it is quite funny that people rip on the iPhones keyboard and hail the Pre for being so cool and WITH A PHYSICAL KEYBOARD yet somehow Palm managed to make it far inferior to a touch keyboard lol. :p

Yeah BS on your so call 70 WPM. Complete BS.

This is based on the fact that on a full size keyboard profession typist are able to hit 70+ WPM but the average person 30 WPM is considered really good.

Really it is BS like this that is just plan stupid.

it's over 65,000 apps now, and one thing that means is you are lot more likely to find and an app that fits your niche interest on an iPhone.

As long as the Pre is only on Sprint, it's no competition.

Why do you say that?

Sprint has over 40 million customers...

Plus, the Pre (and other WebOS devices) is coming to other carriers (worldwide this year, US next year).

I will some what agree with you on the app thing...the problem is, many great apps get buried under garbage. Apple needs to clean up the store a bit in my opinon.

Regardless...Palm OS had 50,000 apps for it....WebOS is not even 2 months old and its at 30 with a closed SDK (not counting a bunch of homebrew apps)....I think the ease of development will help that number jump significantly in the coming months. Also, many iPhone developers have come out and said they were interested in the Pre SDK because competition wasn't as high yet.

Either way....great phones, more choices....i don't know why anyone hates on any phone.

Everyone is different obviously 'cause I have no problems at all typing on the Pre. Auto-correction would be nice but I don't really miss it as I don't mess up enough to go "argh, I wish this had auto-correction."

The Pre is going to Verizon in Jan/Feb of next year.

Remember the argument Palm had back in the days against Windows Mobile when there were like 10,000+ apps for PalmOS and only less than 1,000 for Windows Mobile?

BTW, get the Missing Sync for Palm Pre, you'll get a way better synchronizer and iTunes support no matter which iTunes version you upgrade to.

The 3GS "million" was also for 8 major countries, wasn't it?

1 million is 1 million! The Pre-school can't sniff the iPhone's ass! It's still 200 times more than the Pre sold. You could take away the other 7 countries and it would still dwarf the Pre-school phone.

When I read the thing about people getting sent to voicemail if you're on the internet I thought "no frackin way, seriously?"

.....

So I pulled out my Pre, started loading up a page on the internet, and called my phone from my landline. You're never gonna believe this, but the call went through just fine.

I'm sure you didn't purposely make this up, but seriously, dude. Where do you get your facts? Your overall point about the voice and internet not working at the same time is correct, but the hyperbole kills me.

Try instead, making a call and while on the call going on line and loading a web page. The current sprint network G3 technology does not support this, but will with their G4 network which they are just starting to roll out. It will be next year before it is to be complete.

Palm needs more than that.

1.8 million apps already, from a company like Palm? This looks like huge competition.. Palm needs to have great and intuitive developers to catch up to Apple.

Palm needs a powerful OS for their Pre. It is not terrible, but you cannot compare it to the power of the iPhone OS. Their building blocks are pretty much Legos when compare to the iPhone building blocks.

Then there is also the "multi-touch" issue. Apple was awarded the patents on multi-touch. Palm said they could defend their technology, but I bet that will be coming soon. Palm Pre just lost compatibility with iTunes with the 8.2.1 release that is already out. Palm Pre is going to have to act like jail-broken iPhones, waiting for a new hack before they can again sync with iTunes. Palm will likely be slapped with a lawsuit, but not right away. I am pretty sure that Palm knows it is coming and they probably know that they will lose.

In summary, the Palm Pre is not a serious competitor to the iPhone. That doesn't mean that developers will not try to make some money of the Pre people.

Who gives a damn which sold more. People should only care about which is the better gadget. For some it will be the Pre and for some it with be the iPhone.

Please stop calling it the Pre-school, it just makes your post lose credibility.

500,000, o rly? I am from July 2009 and the App Store that I buy apps for my iPod Touch for has 50,000 apps. What year are you from?

And Pre-school, really? I get it that you don't like the Pre for whatever reason, but that name really fails.

Wait, you own an iPod Touch and are on here defending the Pre? HA! If you like the iPod Touch, the iPhone is twice as good with the added functionality. Odd!

The name got your lame-ass attention didn't it! It looks like a Fisher Price toy phone, so Pre-school fits it perfect. Now go play with your legos and each an ice pop!

I'm not trying to earn street-cred from geeks like you. I've said in my other posts the the Pre-school is a decent phone.......just not an iPhone. If you like technology and media that's over a year behind, have at it. Meanwhile, I'll stick with my iPhone 3GS. Go play in your sandbox!

Agree.
Apple always claimed that G5 processor was fastest.
Until they switch to Intel themselves. And suddenly became 5x faster than before.
Total PR BS.

"I am rich" from Apple for just $999 anyone?

Because the OS runs better on what ever platform its on. the G5 was faster running Mac OS than Windows running on a PC even with faster clock speeds. Then IBM and Motorola dropped the ball. Keep in mind that all of the Intels in Macs went to dual processors for the same price and Since Apple is better at designing computers, The OS ran even faster than before. Windows even runs faster on Apple hardware.

I don't own a Pre. I use an iPod Touch (which I love) and a crap messaging phone because I am stuck on Verizon :( . I would love to have either the Pre or the iPhone. And before you continue to call everyone who wants to have a discussion names like geeks, remember you are calling people names on a technology forum.

Ciao.

Really dude?

Grow up. Seriously.

ha!

I read nearly every post and still can't understand how Pre peeps think it even compares to the success of the iPhone...

3rd year of iPhone, 1.5 billion downloads, 10's of millions of iPhones sold and the Pre is 1 month old and heck, my local Radio Shack has never had any in stock...

Oh... you are arguing about what it _could_ become... well, in that case, I think the Pre might become a tasty cheese flavored donut. I win!

The stupidity in this case is humorous... come on clowns, keep it up, us fanboys need more to laugh at.

Um what?

So basically you are saying anyone making a new phone shouldn't just because there is an iPhone?

And since when does a Phone need to outsell the iPhone to be successful? And your radioshack has never had it in stock because it is sold out....

The cockiness and childish attitude of some of you is pathetic and shameful.

Btw, WebOS is going to be on multiple devices much like the PalmOS/RIM. And if you recall now, RIM has quite the marketshare over the iPhone. So Apple would do best to hurry and get that thing off of AT&T only.

Correct, yet with over 1100 outlets the hype of Pre wasn't strong enough to provide a million units of Pre's to stock and make available to 1100 outlets says that Sprint was cautious about Palm's ability to deliver beyond the hype.

WHAT?

This forum is ridiculous. So when Apple had launch sell outs with the original iPhone it was because AT&T was cautious about Apple's ability to delivery beyond the hype???

ARE YOU SERIOUS?

mkubal was responding to someone who said if you are on the internet on the Pre all incoming calls will go to voice mail which is false.

Then there is also the "multi-touch" issue. Apple was awarded the patents on multi-touch.
The patents weren't for multi-touch in general they were for very specific specific aspects of multi-touch. Kinda like how Bridgestone has patents on specific tire compounds but they don't have a patent on tires in general.

WRONG. WRONG. WRONG.

When I said they have NEVER had it in stock, means they have NEVER had it in stock to even sell out of them. Please detach your crippled Pre mind and read before posting.

I also never said anyone _cannot_ make a new phone. I am laughing at your arguing how it is so much better and maybe, possibly, one-day, might and could be popular. whatever.

Pathetic and shameful? ha! I like, how the iPhone attackers try and take the ethical high-road when they have nothing else to stand on.

Do you wanna take your ball and go home? If not, we're more than happy to continue playing keep away.

Find one post in this thread where I even said:

1. iPhone was bad.
2. Pre was better than the iPhone.

Go ahead. When you don't...just apologize like a man. But somehow i don't think you will.

The constant witch hunt on this forum is ruing an otherwise great place to talk technology (apple related or not).

Despite what some people here seem to think... this is actually a very good move – we should see a lot more new web driven applications in the near future, and maybe even some that are developed by Apple. All Palm needs is one or more killer applications – others can use patents too you know – and there you have it... a competitor to the iPhone (let the flaming begin).

Also, iPhone developers might want to expand and cash in that extra check. It might – I haven't checked – also be a little easier to write a WebOS app.

p.s. I am also wondering about the age of iPhone users, because that must be younger people – I don't know a single person above 25 with an iPhone (all Palm users I know are a lot older and less willing to install dozens of useless applications).
