:), that aside, desktop level multitasking, as I firmly believed, has been praised by every reviews. many call it "revolutionary'.
I've asked you before but since you've never responded, I'll ask again: "What do you mean by desktop-level multitasking vs. other levels of multitasking and exactly how does the Pre implement it?"

As for the "revolutionary" claim, any links to back that up?

From what I can tell, the Pre will be the same as the iPhone:

Great reviews from the public, but any message board user can give you a long list of things it does wrong.

Given that, I think the Pre will do ok. It's a year later than it needed to be and it's on Sprint, so it won't take over the world. But they'll be ok, overall.

Agreed 100%.

I think the Pre is a smart little fellow.

I hope that Palm will have success with their new baby and doing a good job enforcing the competition which will be a benefit to all of us. Forcing the industry without a pause to develop and improve their products.

I wonder if Palm will make a similar good job concerning the marketing of the Pre and if they have enough cash reserves because it will burn money.

Leaving the fan-boys and tech-freaks aside i am not so sure if the "normal" user even knows what a Pre is. Anyways, i wish them luck.

Another weak point could be the mighty AppStore which Palm has to face. Apple's advantage is the terrifying amount of 37.000.000 units ( iPhone and Touch) already sold yet.

As a developer it seems not really hard which platform to choose to make a profit.

Of course it's an iPhone clone. If the iPhone had never existed, you wouldn't be seeing this rash of similar phones. The Pre is an iPhone clone the same way Windows copied the Macintosh (although the Pre appears to be better than Windows).

It seems that you have an unusually broad interpretation of the word 'clone'. By that token, the iPhone itself would seem to be a clone of the LG Prada, am I correct?

I bet they will within 2 weeks (assuming your friends care about "the new hot phone" and all that kind of stuff).

Most people don't care about "the hot new phone" and in a few weeks, that will be the iPhone anyways.

So ... most people won't care about the iPhone? Since most people don't care about the hot newness, is what you're saying?

If the Pre's good, people will know about it. That's how things get sold. People care about cell phones, I'm surprised you don't seem to think so.

Palm should have advertised the Pre like BB did the Storm. Those commercials had people going crazy for Storms and they ended up being awful.

While the Pre is sure to be better than the Storm, I read this review of it over on Gizmodo and it doesn't really sound to appealing to me at all. Check for yourselves.

But everyone already knows what the iPhone is, and it is advertized constantly. When someone says "hey did you hear about the new iPhone?" you won't hear "What's that?" in reply. You will with the Pre. Hell, I haven't seen a single Pre commercial yet.

I never see any BlackBerry Storm commercials (or HTC commercials, for that matter) - yet, there they are.

There were nonstop Storm commercials before it's release, and it's showcased on many Verizon commercials.

Same with the G1. Couldn't even get through a primetime show without seeing a Google commercial.

My impression is that iPhone, when released, has exactly zero third party app, correct?

wow, now

1. DRM is proud
2. sounds like you have already used it for weeks? you can even judge size, keyboard?
3. 1.0..... I guess nexttime everybody can just release 2.0 and skip 1.0 so you will be happy?
4. video... recording.... are you suggesting all the past two years those iPhones are just crap?

your statements are so biased and filled with unfounded personal opinions, it worth less than nothing.

You mean my opinion of this phone is based on my opinion? Shocking!

It's being discussed in the news, both online and televised. That's plenty of advertisement right there.

most of my friends dont even know what the Pre is.

OTOH, a lot of people have heard of popular names, but it doesn't mean they actually know any details.

For instance, I can't count the number of times that someone's looked over at a WM smartphone in my hand, and asked "Is that a Blackberry?" or "Is that one of those iPhones?"

Ironically, ten years ago they would ask, "Is that a Palm Pilot?"

I usually gauge technology by my dad. If he knows what it is, that means it has been advertised very well.

Same here. My dad is big into the technology medium. The only phone I've ever heard of before he did was, well, the iPhone (I also got him to buy one, too, along with about 6 other people).

I've never even heard of the Palm Pre before I joined this forum. I haven't seen any news articles about it. I haven't seen a single commercial for it. Honestly, I can't keep track of cellphones unless they're uber-megaton like the iPhone was.

And how the hell could you not see the Storm commercials? They're so damn annoying. That POV camera, the guy's douchey voice, and the way he highlights all of the meaningless points of the phone (LOL LIEK IT CLIKZ WEHN U TUCH IT!). I couldn't go an hour without seeing one.

A lot of people still don't know what the G1 is. Hell, a bunch of people don't even know that Google released a mobile OS. And if I'm not mistaken, the G1 was poised as an iPhone killer as well, same as the Blackberry storm, the Samsung Instinct, and all those touchscreen LG phones. The iPhone is still going strong.

The Pre looks like an okay phone with a solid OS, but I'll put money down that it'll end up being in the list with the other "iPhone-Killers" when the next hyped iPhone killer is announced. And I bet you the iPhone will stay distinct from that group.

All this talk about iPhone death and defeat reminds me a lot of the MP3 player war that was, and is still, going on. A bunch of companies released a bunch of "iPod-killers" with wonderful reviews and board members saying that the iPod is doomed. But the iPod is still here and going strong, while the iPod-killers have faded into history. The only MP3 player I keep hearing about as much as the iPod is the Zune. And that has nothing to do with Zune being a good mp3 player; it has more to do with the infamous relationship between Microsoft and Apple.

The iPhone is going to be fine, and there will be no running for anyone's money.

BTW, the Pre has had too many mixed reviews. I hear the battery is great, then I hear the battery is not impressive at all. I hear the keyboard is crap, then I hear the keyboard is fine. We'll see how well the Pre does once it gets out to more regular consumers.

All valid points.

For the record, I've never been one to suggest that the Pre is an iPhone killer. But I think at the end of the day (as in, come the Fall / Winter) it'll boil down to:

- The iPhone
- The Pre
- BlackBerry (but really just the Bold and the Curve, with a bit of Storm thrown in)
- and the usual smattering of WinMo devices

(Google is playing Android close to the chest, and I don't think they really want it to be "#1" right now. I bet there's two more revisions until they start trying to "kill" anything.)

This is what the "average" consumer, the "moms", the "teenagers" etc. will care about. In my opinion.

I think the Pre will be a healthy competitor - I'll be surprised if it isn't a solid 2nd or 3rd place contender by the fall.

I doubt Palm will overtake Blackberry, especially considering Blackberry was #1 in sales last quarter (and they are such a powerhouse in business devices)

No, he meant that your statements are biased and filled with unfounded personal opinions....

And yes, he is right.

Be objective.

Who are you to say that am I not being objective? Having used the unusable keyboard on a fake Pre at Best buy, I know it is unusable for me. I can't use it. A tiny physical keyboard with non-staggered QWERTY keys that you have to be a hobbit to use is not my idea of a good keyboard.

1. No video recording.

Fact.

2. Moving parts.

Fact. I don't like moving parts. Never have. Before iPhone, I had a Nokia 8862 and before that a Nokia 6230.

3. QWERTY keyboard is not staggered, and too small, thus unusable.

Outlined above.

4. No iTunes DRM playback.

I get iTunes gift cards for christmas, birthdays - I buy TV shows with them. I realize I could use Requiem to deDRM them but meh? I'd rather my device just play anything in my iTunes library.

5. Bubbly UI is fugly.

Opinion. I have seen it. I don't like it.

6. Small screen.

Opinion. After using a 3.5" screen for 2 years, I am not willing to go smaller.

7. 1.0 software and hardware.

Fact.

8. The phone itself, in my opinion, is fugly.

I have seen it with my eyeballs, and I don't like it.

How much more objective could I be? Saying that I'm being biased just because I own an iPhone and don't like the Pre is true lunacy.
