Palm Pre Vs. iPhone

Who are you to say that am I not being objective? Having used the unusable keyboard on a fake Pre at Best buy, I know it is unusable for me. I can't use it. A tiny physical keyboard with non-staggered QWERTY keys that you have to be a hobbit to use is not my idea of a good keyboard.

1. No video recording.

Fact.

2. Moving parts.

Fact. I don't like moving parts. Never have. Before iPhone, I had a Nokia 8862 and before that a Nokia 6230.

3. QWERTY keyboard is not staggered, and too small, thus unusable.

Outlined above.

4. No iTunes DRM playback.

I get iTunes gift cards for christmas, birthdays - I buy TV shows with them. I realize I could use Requiem to deDRM them but meh? I'd rather my device just play anything in my iTunes library.

5. Bubbly UI is fugly.

Opinion. I have seen it. I don't like it.

6. Small screen.

Opinion. After using a 3.5" screen for 2 years, I am not willing to go smaller.

7. 1.0 software and hardware.

Fact.

8. The phone itself, in my opinion, is fugly.

I have seen it with my eyeballs, and I don't like it.

How much more objective could I be? Saying that I'm being biased just because I own an iPhone and don't like the Pre is true lunacy.

It does not feature video-recording since day one.

Palm was with verizon for a while and those phone's had touch screen so in my opinion apple didn't come up with anything new... They just mixed a ipod with a cell phone. Sure they have the app store but I don't even use it.. The only thing different from the iphone from the other phone's are the software...

I think the pre will make it's mark, but all the hard core apple fan boys think anything that doesn't have an apple on it is garbage....

Apple makes good products, like I said before there are better phones out there for what users need and what functions that want... I still think apple is trying to play catch up... A lot of the feature's that we are getting with 3.0 have been around for years... They could have gave us those feature's from the get-go when the iphone was first released, not 2 years later....

If it's going to be a competitor to the iPhone, it's going to need video recording. If my Nokia 6230 could record video, then the Palm Pre should be able to do so as well.

The same goes for the original and iPhone 3G.

First of all, Captain, there is nothing less in the universe like your username that i would care for.

It even does not matter which phones you call your own that could do breakfast for you in the morning.

Just by stating something sucks although your current handheld is not able to manage it too some kind of disqualifies your lame arguments.

Nobody cares that you may not like it. Although with an Apple-Logo on top you would do.

And by the way, keep your religious attitude there where it belongs. I don't care about that, corporal.

So I said I don't like the Pre in this Pre vs. iPhone thread, and you:

1. Say you hate my username.
2. Say that I can't criticize a phone for not having something that my year-old phone doesn't have. That logic will never make sense to me. The same type logic coming from people who criticize figure skating judges for not being able to do a double axel. Absolute rubbish for brains.
3. Make up something about an Apple logo and me liking it? Which I still don't understand. As I've stated - If it has moving parts, I don't want it.

As a piece of hardware the design of the Pre is good, but not drop-dead gorgeous. Think Lexus, not Ferarri --nice but you don't hurt your neck looking at it as it speeds by. In San Francisco I made a point of taking the Pre out and displaying it strategically at as many places as I could -- bars, lunch counters, my desktop. No-one batted an eye until I told them what it was. Maybe it is gadget-jaded Silicon Valley, but that was disappointing to me. You want the newest, shiniest gadget on the block to elicit at least an appreciative "Oooh," but I got nothing. Babe magnet, the Pre is not.

3) Come on corporal, look at the UI and webOS objective...You wish you would have it on the iPhone.

1) Okay Mr. General, where is your proof that i hate your username. I just mentioned that i don't care about it. I even like to play with it. It's fun.

2) You blame a brand new product for not having a video recording ability but living with that missing feature on your handheld for about two years ?
By the way, your " above posts " are BS. And agian...Nobody is interesting in your opinion.

3) Calm down, General. It does not look cheap and if you watched those review videos, you would be much more like : Yeah, i want that too.

For the record, I've never been one to suggest that the Pre is an iPhone killer. But I think at the end of the day (as in, come the Fall / Winter) it'll boil down to:

- The iPhone
- The Pre
- BlackBerry (but really just the Bold and the Curve, with a bit of Storm thrown in)
- and the usual smattering of WinMo devices

(Google is playing Android close to the chest, and I don't think they really want it to be "#1" right now. I bet there's two more revisions until they start trying to "kill" anything.)

This is what the "average" consumer, the "moms", the "teenagers" etc. will care about. In my opinion.

I think the Pre will be a healthy competitor - I'll be surprised if it isn't a solid 2nd or 3rd place contender by the fall.

I agree that the Pre will be a healthy competitor; however, I don't think it's going to make 2nd place for a while.

Blackberry will have a strong hold on the #1 spot due to the number of different handsets they have out in the market and different carriers that carry those handsets. Blackberry users, also, tend to stay very loyal to Blackberry; they don't usually stray far, and if they do, they don't stay away for too long. There are some outliers who do leave. I'm making this statement based on my experience.

The iPhone has the ability to take the #1 spot; however, a few things need to be done in order for that to happen: more carriers carrying the device, and having the ability to do everything that other handsets can do, such as copy and paste, mms, etc. (This will be remedied with the 3.0 software and new hardware.)

I don't see any possible way for the Pre to take 2nd place for a while, even when it is picked up by difference carriers, which should be in 6 months according to Verizon. A lot can happen in those 6 months, and I can see Apple and RIM working magic to keep or transcend their spots. Some of this magic includes the rumored 3rd Gen iPhone, and the Blackberry Storm 2 (which the pre will have to contend with when it gets to Verizon). The Blackberry Bold is also a very beautiful and nice phone, which is rumored to be heading to Verizon eventually as well.

Ya ... someone else pointed out my list order, I should have put more thought in it! I didn't mean for it to be "the order" they'll end up in, just the order they came to mind. :eek:

WinMo is higher than last (I believe that dubious distinction belongs to android) and you're right - BB is first.

Pre, given the nature of Sprint, will likely settle into 4th.

- iPhone
- WinMo family (this includes *a lot* of units)
- Pre

Maybe something like that?

What's the "world wide plans" for the Pre, anyhow? Do we know that yet?

Pre's worldwide plans? That's what I'm asking. I guess Palm hasn't mentioned anything yet?

I wonder if they'll be more aggressive than Apple was. Apple waited a whole year before doing anything outside the US.

OH! I thought you meant World Wide Plan as in Cellphone Subscription Plans. Definitely no word as of yet. I'm sure they don't have enough funds to expand that quickly. Heck, they are already talking about a big shortage in the US on release day.

lol. I'm going to have to go with The General on this one, but I think they should both shut up by now ;). I don't own an iPhone, but I agree with some of The Generals opinions...

I can see how iGerman would say that you shouldn't criticize something on another device that your device doesn't have. However, if you look at it as a iPhone 3G *new* vs. Pre, then I would say the iPhone 3g *new* will (more than likely) have video recording whereas the Pre will not. Therefore, the iPhone is better in those regards--and that can make or break the decision to buy it.
