Unfortunately, Verizon won't sell me a phone and SIM...they say I have to have an account first. Is there a way around this or any suggested way to get the phone first? (my preference is not to deal with eBay/Craigslist/Swappawhatever).
Go to a Verizon Authorized Retailer and see what they say. Also it may be possible to buy one through Amazon, Costco, Apple or Best Buy, idk.

Buy a phone at apple, to get the phone and sim and return it. Like a cheap iPhone 5c or 5s. The phones are sent back to the factory to be refurbished so the IMEI and ESN numbers change.

Yeah but aren't they going to force me on a More Everything plan when I buy the phone at Apple?
(and honestly I'm hoping to have a Galaxy Note 4)

I'm in the target market for you guys unloading the UDPs...I'm an AT&T customer and interested in making the switch.

So here's the question....I understand I need to have an actual Verizon phone in order to AOL the UDP plan to before I get started. My preference is to deal with a reputable local source for the phone. I do understand I'll have to pay full retail price for it. Depending on the model you want 6, 6+ I can get you a phone and a line. Contact info in my profile.

I certainly wasn't suggesting for you to open a Verizon account thru Apple. I was saying you could ask Apple if they will just sell you the phone without having a Verizon account. Idk if they will or not that is why I said it may be possible.

No. You can buy just phone without contract. Or ask whoever gives you free UDP with good price on Iphone. ;) ;)

Ok, so you're saying go buy a Verizon iPhone 5c or the like from Apple....full price, no contract. Then do the AOL to the UDP plan with the iPhone, then go get whatever I want directly from local Verizon store (now that I have a phone number for them to look up) and return the iPhone?

I guess other than temporarily being out of pocket for two phones, I can see that working.

You may be able to buy one through samsung. Have you checked to see?

Yeah, really interested in the developer edition Note 4....they are backordered 4 weeks right now. Was initially looking for local options to pull this off today and get a UDP from someone but I wasn't expecting Verizon to refuse to sell me a phone at full price....that took me off guard.

then go get whatever I want directly from local Verizon store
I would not go into a Verizon corporate store with a brand new UDP line asking to buy a phone for it even full price. They may switch you off of UDP. Do it through Verizon online if you want to buy directly from Verizon at full price.

Don't you know anyone with a Verizon account who can buy you a phone full price from Verizon if you pay them for it?

Well it shouldn't have been surprising to you. Verizon phones are GSM SIM unlocked and work on ATT and TMobile. Verizon doesn't want ATT and TMobile customers depleting their stock of hot phones so that they don't have any for the Verizon customers.

 Cool, thanks for the good info.

timskrastins, I wouldnt buy a phone from a verizon corp store. They charge a restocking fee. Do you bank with chase? The reason I ask is that Target banks with chase so if you buy a phone from them for full price and return it a few hours later, the money shows up same day since they have an account with them. Thats if you use a debit card.

+ they get commission per any contract signed. Little incentive to sell full price phone.

Wouldn't that impact their account in some way?
And wouldn't the Verizon clerk want to load up the sim and activate it on that person's account?

No. People buy full-priced phones from VZW precisely to preserve their existing UDPs. VZW may have a limit on how many phones they'll sell over a certain period of time (certainly no more than one per account at a time), but otherwise it shouldn't make a difference.

You still need to pay vzw for static ip?

I woud probably use something like dyn dns etc since V charges $500 just to setup a static ip and I don't know if they offer them on their non commercial wireless network accounts and I wouldn't want to draw any unnecessary attention

I am the only one I've ever heard of that had the line show up on myverizon before the phone was activated, and mine showed up as 2GB. Still waiting for the phone so I can return and get rid of the line.

In the meantime I AOL'd the other lines to a new account so now it's letting me order a new line on that. But the nationwide plan that shows up for me to select doesn't match what I have (I can only select 700 min share, but what I actually have is 1400 min share). Has anyone else had that happen and does it matter?

I could be wrong, but your case seems to be fairly unique. It seems for most, the line doesn't show up until activated? I recently got shipping notification from apple earlier this week, and my apple order history shows the phone number that it will be issued, but when i log into myverizon, there's no indication of a new line. I was previously on a single line plan, but switched to a family plan (with still only one active line on it) just to take advantage of this apple add an unlimited data line. I am crossing my fingers the activation goes through and the line shows up with UDP and I wont have to deal with a return.

I was able to get discounts on both of my udp lines. Glitching baby!

I would love to take advantage of this as well. Please explain.

For those of you using it as home internet, what modems are you using with your sim card? Is there a modem that can ouput to ethernet cord or is it strictly wifi only?

there many options that will work well but I like adding a usb modem (Pantech UML295 because it has 2 external antenna ports) to a Cradlepoint router (MBR95, MBR1200, MBR1200b, MBR1400) because it offers external antenna capabilities and you can take the usb modem with you if you travel so it becomes a dual purpose UDP line
