Yes, if you have friends that steal from you ... it's likely you're screwed.

thats what I thought even if your phone gets stolen they could wipe out any card that associated with passbook before you have a chance to wipe it remotely if your able to.
think im gonna turn off passbook on lockscreen

I know - I put a couple gift cards on gyft...was thinking same thing

Passbook need an option for a pass lock.

Not having tested it or really noticed one way or the other... Are you saying it doesn't honor a passcode lock setting? As in, if I have a passcode set, I can still swipe on a Pass Book Notification and have it open without entering my code?

If you don't like it, you can set Passbook not to pop up on the lock screen. You then have to enter your passcode as usual to get to it. Obviously that kind of defeats the point, which is to make the cards easily accessible.

I think if my iPhone gets stolen, I have other concerns than somebody buying 10 Lattes with my Starbucks card.

the default is set to enable passbook access without a pass code, but you can restrict access in the settings like you can with siri.

No, I'm not saying that. But if you let a colleague borrow your iPhone for let's say a google search, they can snoop around and see all your balances on passbook.

For example, I added AmEx to it. Now my balance and past history is visible in passbook.

My point was whatever gift card may it be it could b wiped out. I've had a $500 lowes card and that would real bad to loose. Yes a few latte not that big.

Understandable. I would not put anything of high value into Passbook. For me it's a convenience feature for stuff that I would today carry unprotected in my wallet. Allowing per-card PINs might be a useful addition in the future.

Edit: Maskusee is right, you can set per card whether it should show up on the lockscreen.

BTW, it will be interesting to see what impact a Starbucks card with location-based activation will have on battery life. I noticed that the location service indicator is now on permanently while the screen is locked. I would have expected to see the geofencing symbol ...

I believe it's on a pass by pass basis. Those passes that have that option, you can dissable (ie; Starbucks). I guess all passes that can be used as "credit" cards, will have that option.

If I'm wrong, please let me know.

Yes, but at the same time, you gave them physical access to the device, so I'm not entirely sure I'd chalk that up as a design flaw in Passbook. They can just as easily open your email and read it, check your Safari history should you have any, access your contacts, etc.

Exactly, enable an option for a pin/passcode.
I'm also wondering about battery life, wouldn't location be always scanning for a Starbuks store?

Currently I have several set up for location based alerts, and I've noticed no discernible change in the drain on battery. Every so often, mostly when I turn on the screen and go to unlock, I get a location notification, but it lasts for maybe 5 seconds and is over.

you can set so if your phone is locked you can't use them.

Yeah, just the global phone lock, but I agree, I'd like to see some Passbook level security ... would be easy to implement, iOS already has discreet security for things like In App Purchase, content ratings control, etc.

It'll grow, I think this is a slow, but decent start.

See your own mail above. ;) Just disable the "show on lock screen" option for high-value cards.

Yes, but that's essentially the same as using e.g. a location-based reminder. I found that the normal geofencing (indicated by an outlined arrow) has very little impact on battery life. But Passbook doesn't seem to use that.

I get yor point.
My emails, contacts, don't show my credit/purchasing histor/balance.

Probably same reason we need a passcode to buy an app/song/movie...

So, with passes that used location awareness, is it the same as the Reminders app's geofencing, in which it only checks every 5min or whatever?

Actually, I assume not, since I added the Starbucks pass, and it doesn't show the empty location services icon in the status bar...there's like no info on this feature, really.

are you screwed if you leave your phone at a starbucks and a friend picks it up and takes it to the counter and can spend your card total if you don't need to unlock your phone to use passbook?

I have a $8 balance on my Starbucks card. I'd be more worried about the $400 phone.
