You mean like the Apple Watch at $349?

It's not even close to overpriced, particularly if you compare it to lower end luxury regular watches, which are just watches.

Granted it's way too much in my book for a watch, but given the part of the market they're trying to enter, it's not.

On Facebook Pebble made reference to an "overpriced trophy watch"... Thing is I think there's room for both devices for different markets if they just grow up and don't try and start classless bs like a certain Korean company.

One week battery one a black and white dull screen, congrats.

So many FanBois...

I guess Amazon can't sell those crappy black and white Kindles

Pebble -

Can see my notifications
Can control my music
Can wear it in the pool
Can charge it every 4 days
Everyone can see the screen on all the time

Price is a relative thing, Teens & Young adults drop 150-200$ on a Fossil or 400+$ on a Nixon. I am sure the Apple watch @ 300-500$ price range is going to look quite a steal compared to some of these watches at these price ranges. The higher price (500-thousands) would depend upon how much the fashion market apple is able to capture and how many people take a fancy to the design. I wouldn't be surprised if people who routinely drop a couple of thousand dollars every other year on a luxury watch choose to go in for the more expensive version of the Apple watch. The million dollar question however is, whether apple watch would appeal to such a demographic. As a shareholder, I am fairly confident that the sub 500$ Apple watch would be a run away success and end up re-defining the size of the smart watch market despite of its cost. Where I have doubt is the ability of the more expensive versions of the watch to penetrate the market they are looking to break into. This may take a few years to achieve and I am sure Jony Ive and Marc Newson would refine the design to have it appeal to the higher end customer. Its a unique approach to what others have taken (samsung, pebble, Android wear nike etc) and something that perhaps only Apple could have done (out of the tech companies). The closest competitors to the Apple watch in the long run imho would come from the luxury watch companies trying their shot at a technology watch (I assume here that they will embrace the Android wear eco-system) and it would be very interesting to follow the market to see the competition pan out. What I am more interested in is to see what other "wearable" categories apple looks at given that I am pretty sure the team they have collected will not be restricted to just the Apple watch.

I completely agree. $100 for their base watch is perfectly reasonable and far enough from the $350 base Apple Watch that the two won't be cross-shopped. Any smart consumer would see the benefits Pebble has over Apple without Pebble needing to sound bitter and envious (and scared).

Signs of Apple being Number 1 and unstoppable.

I will start to get worried for Apple, if the falling and threatened competitors stop making free ads for Apple.

Ask the Kindles.

You mean those things that Amazon is upgrading to either super-white or color as fast as they can?

----------

It's called being utilitarian versus the flashy BS.

Nope. Utilitarian would be sharp watch dials with fine hands. e-ink isn't utilitarian, it's ugly. You don't like the Apple Watch? No problem. But the Pebble isn't the every-man device.

Good luck trying to read your notifications outdoors on an OLED.

The article states that the moto 360 doesn't even last a day. I highly doubt any of you will care but for what its worth, I own one and so far it has lasted me 56 hours. That's a little over two days. I know many that are experiencing the same. Please don't attack me. I'm not loyal to any manufacturer. I buy what works and what I like. Simple as that. I own a nexus 5 the moto 360, an iPad 4 gen, a macbook pro and an iMac. I'm happy with all of them. /2cents

Says the fanboy of a company who participated in this juvenile practice for nearly a decade. lulz

Lol, Jesus... does the feigning outrage ever start to feel as lame, forced, & contrived as it obviously is??

Not a single thinking individual can seriously equate the Mac/PC commercials with today's landscape. At the time Windows had over 95% market share. It was quite impossible for Apple to combat that. They were being jokingly scrappy. They were being proud as the underdog. They were NOT being lying or misleading underhanded *****s. That's Sammie's realm.

Why name calling? How low can you go, Pebble? Are you that scared?

----------

The watch managed to work this long without Apple's help, I don't think this will change anything.

But the watch never work under Apple's wrath. I think this will change everything.

A smart watch really should last a minimum of three days, giving you weekend coverage. Who the hell wants to take another charger away? (assuming your not camping and you even have access to an electrical socket). My pebble pipes VIP email notifications, lets me see who's calling me whilst I'm outside in the sun, gives me map directions without me having to keep my phone on display. And it lasts over seven days on a charge

I won't be buying an Apple watch with its expected puny battery life.

It is, but that's why I get 10 days battery life out of it. Which I am fine with. I actually think 10 days is ridiculously short....no way I'm doing something that gets 1 maybe 2 days between charges.

what's so hard about charging your watch every night, right next to your phone which is also being charged?

You will never get DAYS on a smart watch with the sort of features these watches bring to the table. Those that think gen 2 or 3 will get a significant bump in battery life are most likely going to be disappointed because future generations will also most likely up the capability and number of sensors. Smartphones got around this by physically bigger and packing in more battery which smart watches will most likely not do (hope not anyhow ;) ). Simply put, want the features then charge every night or at best every other night. Otherwise buy a band or a pebble that will last longer but doesn't have as many features.

All valid points - and reading on a Kindle is like 1000x better than reading on a tablet, those who haven't tried it will surely be amazed the first time they see the difference.

There is no denying that a full color screen on a smart watch increases the possibilites a lot though - all depending on what you want it to do of course.

I love my Pebble (backed it during its Kickstarter days.) When the Apple Watch was announced, I thought "Guess I'll be using my Pebble only until 2015." Weeks later, I'm not too sure now. Pebble does what it does best, without having to be everything the current smart watches do. So, depending on how the Apple Watch does, Pebble might still be around.

Good for them. I do hope a new revision is coming soon.

I'm with you. I actually think my pebble is nearly the perfect smart watch. It's light and holds a charge for days. The "low-tech" display of the pebble is perfect for it's application - you can see it in all lighting conditions. It doesn't do video or audio, but why would you really want your watch to do those things. I think I'd like to see the simple pebble "low-tech" solution but with an Apple design. I think most companies are over thinking the smart watch. The one feature I think I might really like is Siri. Push a button on a watch and give it a command like "set a timer."

But Apple hasn't grown out of it. During the iOS 8 keynote, they constantly poked fun at Android for their fragmentation problem. They've just grown out of making fun of their competition in their advertising.

But deep down, they're still very much doing it.

They're not "very much doing it". Throwing red meat to a partisan crowd is not the same going after the competition in ads. Or rushing out tweets bashing your competition right after a product announcement. More people see ads on TV/YouTube/social media than hear Tim Cook poke fun at Android during an Apple keynote. Btw, "Android" isn't a competitor, it's an operating system. Remind me the last time Apple called out Google or Microsoft by name in a public event or ad. And why would Pebble reference Jony Ive vs Apple? Do most people even know who he is? It fascinates me that one guy - who isn't even
CEO gets so much attention from the competition.

It will be interesting to see how Apple - and the reviewers - tackle this one.

Almost every single review of Samsungs smart watches have criticized the need for a separate cradle/connector (depending on type of watch) between a regular charger and the watch itself for charging. You do not need two separate chargers though - the cradle/connector-thingy can be used with the same charger you use for your phone, but of course not at the same time.

From what I see the Apple Watch will have a proprietary solution that is not compatible with anything else - which means you very likely do have to bring two chargers when travelling.

Let's see if this is also considered a huge inconvenience (like with most current smart watches in most reviews) - or suddenly, almost by magic, isn't an issue anymore - when the Apple Watch is reviewed...
