The last Mac v PC ad aired in 2009. Yeah Cook throws out some red meat at keynotes but that's not the same as taking cheap shots at competitors via ads. Apple's not out on social media taking cheap shots the minute a competitor releases a new product. This new Pebble ad campaign would be perfectly fine with out the petty reference to Jony Ive.

Again, apple did 66 of those ads and what does the dates they ran have to do with it? Jeez, apple was worse doing it than pretty much anyone. I don't know of anyone that wasn't sick of those ads.

Applebot's sure are a bunch of hypocrites. I prefer their products, but jeez, I don't get how some seem to think apple is a member of their family. They are in it for the money, period. They are a company, period.

However, Apple has grown out of it. Why? It doesn't need to reinforce its community any longer. Now if Samsung and Pebble want to reinforce their community, that's fine - I just don't need to read about it - and I will certainly not switch for them. So if they want generate sales in the Apple community (which they won't, I'm pretty sure of it), then their way of bashing is pointless.

But Apple hasn't grown out of it. During the iOS 8 keynote, they constantly poked fun at Android for their fragmentation problem. They've just grown out of making fun of their competition in their advertising.

But deep down, they're still very much doing it.

They did 66 of those ads in north america, so the compeditors have a ways to catch up. What does the last 5 years have to do with it? Ajpple is just as bad, or even worse if you count commercials so why not just get over it? I don't see why people are such apple apologists when they are just a big company out to make money.

Just trying to make a point that he's using that single campaign to back up his statement that apple doesn't "advertise on their products own merits."

Generally speaking most Apple ads are exactly that, showcasing user experience, not bashing or comparing to competitors.

Heh, it's dropped to what I paid for in the Kickstarter.

I dunno how screwed they are. I use a Pebble now and it does everything I need it to (music remote, notifications) excellently, is water resistant to 50 metres, has a week-long battery charge, and is readable in daylight perfectly. Those are things I want in a watch. Maybe I'm in the minority? Heh.

It has some nice functions but it is as ugly as hell, even the redesigned version.

I don't even like the Apple Watch but it's clear to me it's going to be a winner. It will likely sell through more units in its first weekend on sale than Pebble ever have or will with their watch in the companies entire life and that's a pretty realistic expectation.

Okay there's one big thing difference here.

Apple touts themselves up as the very best of the best. The best phones, the best desktop OS, the best mobile OS, the best of everything. They're #1 and no one can touch them.

And that's fine, that's how they choose to advertise themselves: The premium computer company. And it works for them (mostly).

The problem is, that opens the door wide open for ridicule from competing companies when something they do doesn't go their way, or isn't the very best. If Apple can't live up to their lavish claims, then they deserve to get slammed for it. They deserve it.

If Apple were more humble, their competition would be as well.

I mostly agree. Except that Apple, nor any other company, needs to be humble. Every company SHOULD think of themselves as the best of the best, and back up their products, and advertise as such.

So you're saying since Apple is the thought leader in the smart phone business that it's ok for other companies to bash them in their ads, but when Apple makes a single campaign years ago that they don't advertise on their products own merits?

Companies have always done it toward the biggest, or at least the perceived biggest. Pepsi vs coke, etc. Apple did it a lot and still does it at keynote.

They are a big company, they don't care about you, they just want your money.

Pebble is OK, I guess, but the screen I saw had a pretty low contrast. Plus, it's only monochrome. Battery life more than three days isn't necessary, in my opinion. My electronic devices recharge when I recharge (sleep).

All that said, I think it would help for smart watches as an idea make an actual compelling selling point that makes it worth wearing, or even spending money on it.

I own a pebble smartwatch. It doesn't have a color screen, a camera, or great design but it does have great battery life.

This watch does all the things I need it to soo r me currently. It'll probably be my watch for awhile until apple releases one with a better battery than what I have. The apple watch is nice but at that price it's a no for me.

No, no. What I'm saying is people here shouldn't be bashing Pebble for doing some joyous poking at their competition.

Some people here are saying this is the end of Pebble, or Pebble is shaking in their boots, or whatever.

When really, their advertising department is just having a bit of fun.

No one predicted the end of Apple during the time when they were constantly making fun of Google and Microsoft. No one should be predicting the end of Pebble either.

Besides, the Apple Watch is going to be expensive. There will always be a market for less-expensive smartwatches that provide most of the same features and abilities (and about 5x-6x the battery life). That's the market Pebble is aiming for.

"Breathe Apple, it's just a music player"
- Archos, 2001

"Breathe Steve, it's just a phone"
- Blackberry, 2007

"Breath Steve, it's just a tablet"
- Microsoft, 2010

"Breath Jony, it's just a watch"
- Pebble, 2014

Surely you remember the "I'm a Mac" ads, right? It wasn't that long ago.

And no Apple keynote goes by without them making fun of Android.

So that means Apple must be in a constant state of fear of Microsoft and Google.

Yes... Apple was scared of Microsoft during the "Mac vs PC" days.

Luckily... Apple found their 2nd Act and expanded into phones and tablets... quite successfully, actually.

What's Pebble's 2nd Act gonna be?

Pebble eu store, brushed stainless with a leather strap: £179

Amazon.com shipping international, same watch, $199 - £128.14 + 5.06 shipping + 26.64 import fees = £159.84.

What's with the £20 eu store premium? Even worse when it's € not £

Pebble will always be a player in the sub-$350 smartwatch market.

Not everyone is going to be willing to spend that much money on a watch with a one-day battery life. Granted, Apple Watch will most likely be very successful, but having less-expensive alternatives is also good.

I'm one of those.. £300-350 seems excessive for a watch. Especially when you look at the margins apple make on iPhones, you just know they'll be making a decent margin on the watch too. Just hurts a little.

And I know, it's not _just_ a watch

No Apple user will buy a Samsung phone because they ridicule Apple users as stupid.

Says you... I don't take those ads personally. I change phones often and sometimes it's a Samsung. I'm a proud owner of the 5S but it's not a stupid commercial that's going to prevent me from buying Samsung... Stop taking things so personally.

pebble is so doomed haha. their watches are primitive compared to the competition.

It is, but that's why I get 10 days battery life out of it. Which I am fine with. I actually think 10 days is ridiculously short....no way I'm doing something that gets 1 maybe 2 days between charges.

The one week battery is a deal breaker for me. It lets me wear my pebble to bed and use it as an alarm clock.
