Not sure how something that has not been announced is considered "Overdue". Last I checked Apple has promised no one an update to the iMac.

We like to confuse a rumors with official statements.

Forget rumors, opinions, etc. but look at the computer industry standard for similar updates & then Apple's own history with updates (check MR's Buyer's Guide). These updates are certainly overdue & I'm surprised to read that some posters here actually think it's reasonable that Apple might keep us waiting until June/July.

I'll definitely not be waiting that long. No updates next Tuesday & I'm buying a PC. ;)

I sure hope Steve Jobs will be able to sleep tonight. ;)

If you want a PC, buy one. Don't wait until Tuesday. I'm sure there will be no updates to the PC right after you buy it.

Apple might have technical reasons, who knows? While that doesn't mean they shouldn't update their hardware, it does mean (to me, at least) that it's less likely that they'd update it now only to update again in a few months.

If you're looking for constantly updated hardware and you want Apple, you're really not looking in the right place, unless you don't mind building yourself a hackintosh.

Not to be looking for too many signs, but there are some interesting selling trends out there.

The Apple refurb page is showing no Mac Minis right now. The Futureshop in Canada has ended its Apple sale and the stock on most Minis and iMacs is 1 or two machines. I think one of the models had 6 remaining. They are also having an Apple one day sale on the 13th. We must be near the end of the cycle if stock is getting this low.

The one caveat is that Apple still has their "limited time special price" on their refurb page. I know the update is going to be minor, but I just want to see what tweaks have been made.

Well I caved in and bought a 2.8 GHz w/ 2GB RAM, 500GB HD from an apple retail store

To me it was just that my old computer a G4! Powerbook, with 512MB Ram, 80GB HD and 64bit graphics card just wasn't cutting it at ALL

And even if they update it in the next weeks or month, I'll be happy with my purchase, because it was such a solid upgrade for me, I never had the new OS or even Front Row! Never had an iSight, never had such a large harddrive or screen resolution!

So anyway, I hope well to all that can wait, for me my 4 year old powerbook just was TOO old!

Can't read anything into the mini's part. They are always in great demand in the refurb section, and sell out quickly, often in a couple of hours.

When the new releases come out on the online Apple Store, how long will it take for those updates hit the Apple retailers? Just wondering if I'd be able to save any time if I didn't want to wait for the product to be shipped to me. I suppose this would only apply if I didn't want to customize the computer.

All this talk of inventory and other 'indicators' reminds me of the how bad it got on Wall Street in trying to predict what Greenspan would say. There was even a spoof article (some did not realize it was a spoof though..) of new techniques to measure the furrows in his forehead as he spoke. As the video cameras recorded his testimony the networks would apply analytical techniques and their best servers to measure the furrows and thus predict the impending movements in the market. The other 'technique' was how thick his briefcase was. They were both equally effective.

I don't think so. Here are the specs that are up right now.

Refurbished Mac mini 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo
512MB memory
80GB hard drive
SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 memory
This is $649

Here is what I bought (cut and pasted from my order confirmation)

REFURB MAC MINI 1.83/2X256/80/SD/AP/-USA FA608LL/A

As far as I can tell, this translates to:
Refurbished Mac Mini 1.83 Core Duo (I know this from my order)
512 MB memory (which I'm not going to use anyway - but it is the same)
80 GB hard drive
Superdrive (no details on the packing slip, but it is definitely dual layer)
(It also has the 950 graphics processor)]
I paid $479.
This is the exact same computer, only faster, for $170 less. I don't really get it, but I'm not going to argue.

Cool I hope you like your new Mac.

I would very much like it to be April 22nd. I think I want to return my Macbook, as I am within 14 days, and get an imac. I want the more for my money. With an update I would be sold, and would be back at the apple store in a shot! Where did April 22nd guess come from anyway?

If the new Mac mini's are going to show up soon, I think I may actually be getting one. My G4 is working good still, but it's gotten slower over time and my fiance wouldn't mind something that's considerably faster.

In the meantime, good advice to check out the refurbs.

Kind of a dumb way to make a decision about what type of computer to buy, but go for it. Apple is not going to care. I am pretty sure there is more to the apple strategy than release a computer every x days according to some website that tracks some average number of days between releases. You might want to look up the word average on your new PC when you get it.

Edit : only 284 more posts until the release of the imac!

I'm probably overly optimistic, but I'm hanging-out and waiting/hoping for a quad-core iMac. If they announce that, I'll be at the Store plunking my cash down!

The store in my mall is out of mini's and all IMACS (except what is on the floor). Could this mean something?

First, Intel needs to release a mobile quad-core CPU, but we should see those by mid-year. :D

Hopefully Apple is designing the new MacBook Pro form factor to support them. Stuffing them in the current iMac shouldn't be too difficult (they can always go to a more powerful CPU fan).

I hope we get something tomorrow. The clock is ticking for me. Graduation is May 9th, which leaves about 4 weeks left to use my educational discount.

does your student ID expire May 9th? or does it simply say "Expires 2008"? you may have until December 31st of this year to get an educational discount... also, it's crazy easy to order a mac with educational discount from the apple store online - apple does not have access to your student file, or your non-student file for that matter... at least that's what the apple telephone support agent told me a few years back when i mentioned that my expired Student ID still worked on the apple store online.

Please hurry up and buy a PC so we don't have to listen to you anymore.

To all you guys that have local Mac stores, how about you all be useful and try geting some hints from the store workers, like ask them why they are low or out of them, and see if they got any upgrade time hints. Who knows, you might be talking to DeepThroat! :D:D :apple::apple:

I tried that. But they swear blind that they know nothing. I find that very hard to believe, but if they told everyone they were updating them, they wouldn't sell any. So I don't blame them. I just want them to update tomorrow. Than I will be very happy, just like this :D
