That's it...

I'm done. Refurb model here I come.

My strategy is this...order it now and I have 14 days from the day it ships. That gives me to the end of the month for the new one to come out.

Bye-bye Macrumors forum thread...it's been torturous.

That's what I'm going to do. I've been really tempted to just purchase a refurb mini and be happy with it which I'm sure I will be. With the money I save compared to buying a new one I'll up the RAM on it. It will serve me well, more than I could ask from it. :D

I've also done the exact same thing this morning. And guess what, they've already started shipping it! I'm also planning to see what happens over the next couple weeks, but I'm afraid that the 10% restocking fee won't be worth it once I open the box.

The waiting is making me a little nuts as well. I sold my revision A mac mini 1.25gz for a surprising amount on ebay and have been living with a PC here in the interim. I am close to caving in on a 1.83 C2D mac mini as I really don't need a superdrive and I do have an external hard drive. This discussion about refurbs has caught my attention though. Can someone comment about Apple refurbs? How nice are they, how distinguishable are they from new in terms of cosmetic flaws, etc. ?

I bought the same one you are considering. Other than the box, which said "Apple certified reconditioned product," mine would have been indistinguishable from new. I'm sure there's some luck involved, though. Some people get ones that are better than spec (more RAM), and I'm sure some occasionally get ones with a scratch (although I haven't heard any complaints about that).

I bought a refurb Mini a few years ago and a couple of days after I got it the thing died on me.

I took it back to the store and the replaced it with a new one. :D

By the way... the rep I dealt with on the phone was able to give me a discount on the :apple:care and said that the 14 days begins the day it ships out.

He also said I should expect it by the 22nd which gives me time to see if the update does occur but to be honest...I don't think a GPU upgrade (which was the only thing I was hoping for) would end up being worth the extra money it would cost for a new one.

The 1.83 is the one I'll be getting also. I don't need a superdrive or the larger HD. I have an external DVD burner and an external HD just sitting on my desk collecting dust. It would be nice to have the 2.0GHz but I won't be doing anything but the usual mundane tasks of email, internet, itunes, and maybe a few photo touchups.

EDIT: I guess I'll have to wait. I was about to purchase the 1.83 refurb as soon as I got home from work but the only one available is the 2.0GHz.

you're all brave souls - ordering refurbs... waiting sucks, but it's been so long already that even waiting until the end of the summer if needed would be fine... although, i do have a fairly decent computer in the meantime... if i didn't, i may not be as strong...

i'm just thinking of that day soon to come... head up to the Apple Store, check things out for a while as if i'm a casual onlooker, all along having intent on buying... pretend to be stand-offish and unsure with the sales rep, make him/her work a bit... :p

This is going to sound really mean for all those poor souls who are going to wait ... but.. the lack of an imac update and the fact that the penryn update this year (if indeed it happens) will probably not make a hugely noticable difference to the performance of these machines has finally made my mind up...

It was a fight between the 2.8 imac and the mac pro for my money (just had to stretch a little more for the base spec pro, with a few small upgrade options) but its over, no refurbs (as this will be my first 'proper' mac desktop and I want new) and no more waiting. Next friday the pro comes. Still that doesn't mean I am not going to keep watching to see what :apple: do with the imac and mini, cause it's interesting. ....

Only problem now is I have just discovered my rather ancient (but otherwise trusty) 17" CRT (yes thats CRT) has a dry joint and the horizontal somethingorother circuitry has failed resulting in the monitor failing occasionally and the picture dissapearing to one horizontal line across the screen and I can't be bothered to fix it (it is a CRT after all time to get with the times methinks) . Overtime a hoy then to get a 23" ACD.. Damn you apple for not making a faster Imac available in time... :D

What's making me wait (apart from losing my money being scammed for a Mac Mini on Ebay) is the idea of a re-design. Imagine if they made the Mini so that it was easy to change RAM or Hard-Drive. That would really annoy me if I'd just bought a refurb.

But I don't expect the performance of any updated Mini to be that different.

Raymen, if you're getting intermittent frame collapse it's pretty likely you've got a dry joint(s) in the frame output area like you said. Check the legs of the frame output microprocessor. All it needs is a tiny bit of solder and it'd be good as new - wouldn't cost you more than a couple of pounds if you do it yourself.. tenner at most if you need to buy a cheap soldering iron.

I've got a 19" TFT that runs at 1280*1024.. I'm tempted to buy a Mac Pro too, but I do a bit of Photoshop work every now and then so I'm quite attracted to the prospect of a 24" iMac at 1920*1200. :)

It's my birthday in a couple of days.. I think I'll just go and buy one too. But then the old ones will go down in price when the new ones come out.. potentially cheaper than the refurbs? I don't know. Difficult decision to make, but since I don't NEED one right now I'll give it to the end of the month.

Man,

I am hopping for a MacMini update ASAP. I want one for my parents and one for the living room ( AppleTV could be an option.)
All this talk about Minier Mini has my hopes high that I can add the Mini behind my HD screen :)

C'on Apple... give us the Mini, we will give you our money! :D:D:D:D:D

Kind of a dumb way to make a decision about what type of computer to buy, but go for it. Apple is not going to care. I am pretty sure there is more to the apple strategy than release a computer every x days according to some website that tracks some average number of days between releases. You might want to look up the word average on your new PC when you get it.

Edit : only 284 more posts until the release of the imac!

Please hurry up and buy a PC so we don't have to listen to you anymore.

How about some of you bright sparks having a good hard think about what a winking smiley very likely means? Please get back to me if you need any help. ;)

As for the strategy here, well in my (be it only 2 years) time as a Mac owner, I've not previously been aware of any "Limited Time Special Price" discounts on non-refurb Macs going for as long as with these iMacs. In the UK the 24" iMacs are still going. So why the extended period?

If it's just a slight Penryn speed bump, extra RAM, VRAM & HD space, then I think those who've already bought the discounted iMacs have done very well (you could easily argue they still have whatever the upgrade). But for those still waiting, new video cards must now be a strong possibility, & on any non-upgradeable computer that alone will surely be well worth the wait.

Gave up waiting

I gave up waiting 3 weeks ago and bought from the refurb section. Would never have guessed it wasn't new, other than the box it came. I'm extremely happy with my first iMac and am glad I'm not still waiting! :D

What do you mean the box it came? Are the boxes any different than the new ones or what? Thanks!

Refurbished Macs come in brown boxes versus the glossy colorful ones that normal retail ones come in. Apple recently redesigned the iPod boxes to be white with an Apple logo on them.

Hard Drive Upgrade

Anyone want to put forth a guess on the chances of getting a 7200 rpm drive in the mini?

I would be ordering a 2.8 imac refurb but apple don't like selling them in Ireland. I'm just going to wait it out till June if I have to! But is the update is in June and I don't see some 800Mhz memory some 1033Ghz FSB and a Mobility 3600 I'm going be pissed.

Hey thanks for clarifying. I'm enjoying my iMac so much!! although I wish it didn't came with a few scratches here and there, I wonder if they opened at the border when it was in transit or something like that.....hmmm oh well.
