Hope this isn't true but an Apple associate in the mall just advised me that there will not be any updates until Dec 2008 at the earliest! I thought he was kidding but he seemed quite convincing. If this is indeed true I am buying an IMAC this weekend!

Thoughts? Comments?

Um, very doubtful. If they are that sure of themselves then just get it in writing that if Apple does release a new iMac before Dec 08 that they will give you a full refund of the one you buy today as long as you purchase a new one...

:D

azentropy, do you have any guess as of when (approximately) will they update the iMacs? If they don't do it before May, I'll buy a Penryn MBP, though a laptop isn't my favourite option.

Not that my guess is any better than anyone elses - other than the rep who said they wouldn't update until Dec that is!!!

I originally thought they would do a bump these first two weeks of April, but since they haven't I now think they may wait until June/July and make it a more significant update also using the new chipset. Of course if they run out of chips before then and Intel with pushing the move to Penryn they still might do a processor bump.

New iMac?

That would be so sweet and the timing would be perfect, why?
Recently submitted my accounts to my accountant to see how badly I'd done last year:(
Put off upgrade until I knew how much tax was due:(
Period since last iMac upgrade is long so update imminent  put off upgrade again:(
Signed off accounts today:) tax bill not too bad:D
New iMac rumoured (rumored for those across the pond) next Tuesday.;)
Can't wait to make my order:D Hope rumour is true, money in bank not at the revenue:cool::cool::cool:

P.S. Spare a thought for the faultless reliability for my G4 17" Flat panel iMac that it will replace. It will go to a good home. anyone want it?;)
EDIT point.
A thought has crossed my mind though.
What if the new iMac doesn't have a disc slot a la macbook air?
There'll be a rush to buy the old stock then! Perish the thought.

An apple channel did send out the price drop email several weeks after the prices dropped - I imagine to spur sales to clear out space. Other Resellers are also offering price drop/closeouts so there is certainly a shelf-clearing fever going around.

It may be to make room for the new, but it may simply be a response to the US economic slow-up wherein nobody wants to be sitting on inventory when they could be sitting on cash.

Why on earth would they release something new in December?
MacWorld is in early January.

I guarantee there WILL be an update before December! I was going to purchase a new 2.8GHz iMac but a friend who works for corporate Apple told me to wait for a few weeks because something new is coming. Also, I work at Best Buy and our iMac supplies have been dwindling so we all expect something new and soon.

Quad core iMac is what I am looking for, I'm sure it won't be tomorrow but I will sure as hell want one of them when they come out

I am waiting to order 2 X 24" iMac 2,8 GHz. I have been dissapointed for the past 6 Tuesdays :(

Still, I will not buy those iMacs untill they upgrade the current ones! They are due for a Penryn bump and I will not invest in old equipment.

Anyway, talking about future Quad Core updates. I would be much happier with a 8GB Ram option rather than a Quad Core option.

I think Ram will benefit us more with current software as there are hardly any programs, that really benefit or can use Quad Core technology to the fullest...

I am with you. Allthough it sucks to wait - it makes no sense to pluck down any $$ for old technology given the current economy.

Peryn = same performance as Merom
Peryn gives you:

1) Better battery life
2) Lower heat

Both, very useful in iMac's.

Why anyone would wait for a Peryn update on an iMac is beyond me. I don't expect any iMac update until June since it just doesn't make sense.

Either way, they're due for either more performance at the same price, or a price drop (though, the "Special limited time offer" price in the refurb store probably counts).

Well, those two reasons are the very same for which its hard to expect just a processor update, in order to apple to really sell it as a worthy update I'll expect them to also offer improvements in gpu, ram and maybe hdd areas as well... just as the mbp did... it may still not be the gratest worthiest update to wait for... but Im pretty confident they will offer more than just a processor change... either way, if like me, you would be getting a 2.8 ghz imac (which is said to bump just about 15% from the 2.4 model) the small contribution the penryn reports to deliver will be something one would want...

You are right tough, as days go by... an april/may update seems more improbable... in favor of a more significant june/july one...

I think the 6MB Cache on the 2,8 GHz Extreme compared to th 4MB Merom is good for a 10% speed boost. And I don't mind if the fan does not kick in that often due to the lower heat ;)

Benchmarks don't support any significant performance increase because the 800mhz bus is the bottleneck, although I hear ya on the lower heat. I just don't think Apple will update an entire line of their 2nd best selling computer to save some heat. They'll wait until June for a more realistic upgrade. Until then, they'll be more than happy to rip ppl off on stale hardware for another 2 months. Cha-Ching!!!!

Have you ever heard the sound of operating iMac? Under heavy load they are quieter than or the same as idling MacBooks...
