...I would love to improve my photography as much as possible if I could just get the time!

Thanks all.

Paul

P.S. Edited to add. Very cool thread btw and some bloody fantastic pictures, some of which inspired me to post one of mine up on here!

Welcome to MR and to this thread! That's a beautiful cat you've got there and I like the way the immediate focus is on those eyes staring at me!

By the way, have a look at the post at the beginning of this thread which has got all the instructions for posting in it. There's a very useful link called Using the quote button about the use of timg tags when quoting to keep the picture small and save space. Look forward to seeing more of your pics!

It seems to be sunset month so I thought I'd add one.

that's cool...

Thanks Ish, for the welcome and the (extremely) helpful pointer to using the TIMG tag.

I like cats, so I'm required to like your photo...;). This is a good portrait, but putting the eyes on the centerline of the frame makes it static. If you aren't familiar with the "Rule of Thirds", look it up with a search engine. It's a basic for good/better photography.

Too much editing, in my opinion. The photo has a good histogram and just needs a slight levels adjustment like this to brighten is up a bit. The skin tones on your edit are too burned for me.

Oh, you lucky devil!

You've really developed a 'look' that is your own. I'd seen the early pics on this page so I jumped to the bottom and worked my way up. As soon as I saw the bottom inch of this photo I knew it was one of yours! I don't know if it's the look of your particular camera and lenses, or what you do in post, but it certainly looks good.

Wow. Thanks! It means a lot to hear comments like that. I'm not sure what it is either, but thanks again. :)

Wowee!

Makes my pic seem bland in comparison ;)

dude I love your editing :)

My oldest daughter got her braces today. So her smile is now under construction.

Thanks! That's the beauty of a circular polarizer at work at a 90-deg. angle to the sun. A recent addition to my kit that proved invaluable in the Caribbean. Its ability to cut through haze, eliminate reflections, and saturate the sky, foliage, and water is outstanding. :)

I like this shot, but can't help but think it would be better with a blurred background. Unfortunately this P&S can't handle that. :(

WOW, you're so lucky to have seen and captured this!

Thanks.

I was very lucky to be there at the right time. I was on some hight ground a few miles away trying to take photos of the Auroras, but the display was not very good. Then I decided go home to bed, and on the way there happened to see a lot of Aurora activity not too far from my house, so I rushed to the spot I took this and a few more photos at, and made it just on time. Thirty minutes later the Auroras were gone :)

Your photo reminded me of a wildlife refuge photo I took a couple weeks ago - albeit nowhere near as well executed as your own.

This is the Gray Lodge NWR in the Northern California central valley. Snow geese and ducks in the foreground, Mt. Lassen in the background.

I have no clue what these are. I only skimmed through my bird book and can't find them but I'll do a further inspection in the morning :)
I noticed how some have yellow/black eyes while others have brown.

I saw the thrush again! I got a few more pictures but I wasn't able to fully focus on him. He's a tough one to catch in the act.
He arrives in my backyard between 7-9am again at 11am-1pm then around 4pm if lucky. I'll hear his high pitch call while the sun is setting. The bird feeders are most active between 11am-1pm. So much action during that time. I even saw a few finch which I have never seen before.

Cheap and easy with a nice color pallet, well placed horizon and nice warm feel to it. Great action and tone variations in the clouds. The horizon is just a little off kilter, but only folks like me notice things like that... This would make a nice calendar page.

Thanks that you liked it Dale. It actually wasn't that easy of a shot to take since I pulled over the shoulder of a busy freeway to take it. 30 feet behind me was the sound of hundreds of cars passing by at 65-80 mph. I did that because I saw this pier that I wanted to take a shot of, but it was too dangerous to be walking around the freeway shoulder with a gimpy tripod (and yes, gimpy horizon!). This was the best I could do. Not happy with the composition at all.
