Birds in the Storm

Nikon D3100, with Tamron AF-18-270mm f/3.5-6.3.
ISO 200, 270 mm, 0 ev, f/6.3, 1/100.
It was snowing pretty hard here in NH, so I shot this through the window as a raw file. Adjusted with Nikon's ViewNX 2.

Our Slate Colored Juncos prefer to eat from the deck, but will go for sunflower seeds in the hanging feeders if there are no other options. The Cardinals and various finches are regular visitors.

I was near the top of Stone Mountain setting up for sunset pictures over the Atlanta skyline. I saw these folks walking up the mountain. This candid photo ended up more interesting than a pretty sunset picture would be for today, even though the raw sunset images look pretty good. I'll process and share them later.

Fence in the backyard was covered in frost this morning. Much better pic at full resolution but still pretty cool.

Juncos are ground feeders and I don't think they will frequent your hanging seeds. I used to scatter seed under my feeder for the Juncos and kept the feeder full for the other seed birds.

As far as your lens savings goes, think about 500mm if you want a bird lens. My 120-400 Sigma just barely cuts it. Stick with the savings plan any you might have enough to cover the tax...

Hah, tell me about it. Those lenses are pricey! I'll keep saving and one day I'll get it. I've been entering as many local photo contests and some online in order to speed up the process. I may not have a great chance but one can dream right? :p

Yea, I kind of noticed that the first day of putting up the new feeder. Only one Junco tried the seed feeder but couldn't sit on it. It doesn't matter though cause the Chickadee's that visit everyday make a mess so there's plenty of seeds on the ground for the Juncos to eat.

I finally got a good picture of the Wren!! Atleast a one that a like... I'm not 100% sure on what type of Wren it is but after looking closely at a few in my bird book, I've narrowed it down to Bewick's Wren. I could be wrong though.

This little guy is loud! Makes a DZEEEEEB, sound very high pitch but I've noticed he comes around twice a day for a very short period of time. It's still kind of early in the year though.
Spring through Fall I see a ton of birds in my backyard. I'm hoping to see some woodpeckers this year and I'm not talking about that annoying Northern Flicker although he is still welcome :)

Anyone know how to lure a Pileated Woodpecker? I have five dead trees, two suet cake feeders, a few seed feeders and two hummingbird feeders as I heard they like the sweet stuff? (don't know if that's true)
I also made two homes with holes big enough for the woodpecker plus a feeding log! I only saw him fly by once last summer and as I quietly came out he flew away :( never to be seen again until a few days ago at a near by park walking my dog. I was so quiet watching it peck away yet so angry I didn't have my camera with me!!!! I was about 7 feet away if not less. Man that guy is HUGE! Like a mini Eagle or something hah.

Cheers

Especially love all the snow shots. I never get to see any of that down here.

14 years old and killing it, Sam.

Pileated woodpeckers mostly eat insects. They will also go for fruit and nuts.

Usually I spend all my time exporting photos. In fact, it has been a while since I have even opened Photoshop. Well except on accident like the other morning. That was promptly followed by swearing. I tried the old apple cliche and decided to take it to new heights. Masking, brushing, a few layers and brushes, curves, filters and a few other tweaks made this. I hope you like it. Oh also the studio lights and muslin played a part.

**Thanks to Wal*Mart for the apple.
