Good shot!

But not the kind of subject I like to see. :( Hope they get those fires put out soon. Good luck to all involved in that.

Luckly that fire is now out, and we are getting a good helping of rain today which should help some of the other CO fires.

Here is todays shot:

Love that time :) I think it's that the far mountains have a quality I also see in P's photographs where they have more DR than they normally would with a ND grad on it's own. Did you lift shadows or uniwb?

Yes I agree, I find with the DA 40mm Ltd you often forget it's a DSLR. I think everything about it knocks the socks of the K20D, the K20D did feel really great in the hand, especially with the grip but I'll need a K-5 grip to make a fair comparison. The shadow noise was the biggest killer on the K20D imho, the K-5 blows it away. My feeling is a shot like that on a K20D would exhibit more noise in the shadows on the mountains, I may be exaggerating this but it did bother me quite a bit.

I'm still keeping the K20D as a backup and for some events, it's prominent size with the grip attached portrays you as more "important" which is useful when you need corporation and people clear from the view of your lens :p

I have the grip on the K-5 at all times and it feels perfect in my hands, really love the size of the combo. I also have an L-Bracket for the camera with the grip which I also keep on at all times so the combo looks very "impressive" ;)

I tried finding a UniWB profile for K-5 but was unable to. I did some tests to see how accurate the in-camera histogram is. It starts showing overexposure about half a stop too early (under normal circumstances). So I just use AWB, expose to the right, then take another shot half a stop further. If I'm on a tripod I usually bracket in both directions and then choose the most exposed one without clippings. Then I do a soft GND over the overexposed parts which leaves me with not needing to lift shadows by a lot.

Here's an example, where the shadows in the foreground were black in the "properly" exposed shot:

Nicely seen...

Familiar place, different day. I get drawn back and back to certain places, 'cos the light seems to be different every time. The rain started after I took this shot, and I had to go to to the pub instead...

Ahh, the tough life of a wandering photographer...:) One keeps reading about the importance of light and how it can change often and quickly. Your countryside photos are a constant reminder to me of that fact.

I didn't notice her expression she'd made until after I took the shot. Most of the time she was laughing and smiling.

Added this in another thread, thought I'd share it with this one as well.
Just wanted to say that the members of this forum have been a very big inspiration to me, and you guys are the reason I'm trying to get better every day.

A redux, this time w/o the umbrellas open. Nice.:)

Nice one! That eatery must be the most photographed one at Circular Quay. I remember being there myself once with cameras at the ready.

I'm going to head down there myself again - but not soon since I've torn a calf-muscle. My leg, ankle and foot is all taped up at the moment. Bl*#dy irritating.

Good shot with nice colors. And no blown out highlights too, which I can't seem to achieve in similar scenes

Thanks for the comments guys. :)
That's a bummer Avro, hope you're better soon!

Rob, I usually underexpose and then dodge need it be, I believe this shot was just underexpose a stop.
I took this when all of the light in the scene was in balance, making capturing it all in one exposure an easier task.
