What about the sides?

The antenna band consists of multiple antennas.
They are separated by non-conductive gaps.
Bridging the gaps connects the different antennas together, and alters their transmission. A bad thing.
If the new iPhone had a back that was all metal then the metal, being conductive, would connect all of the antennas together (because the back is connected to the sides/top/bottom). Again, a bad thing.
The back therefore, is not all metal but has inserts of a non-conductive material so as to not bridge the different antennas.

Right now: ermahgerd, iPhone 5 is ugly

Pre-order goes live: servers implode

But here's the thing... don't be discouraged...

As a newcomer to iphone, you will love it. All these rants you see (including mine) are because we wanted something different to what have been around for a while in the sense of screen format.

The release iphone 5 will no doubt be typical of apple's legendary quality... so it is something for you to be looking forward to.

Even though I panned the 4S, I suggested a friend look at the 4S (first time apple user), and he loves it. It may be the same for you.

True, but even though I've never owned an iPhone, I'm plenty familiar with them, so getting one won't be that special.

I might get the 4S if it drops to $99. The 4S I think is a better design.

What about the sides?

The actual antennae are only in the top and bottom portions. The sides are just placeholders for structure. Also, the wifi antenna has been moved inside as of the 4S. I suspect it will stay inside for the new one. So the glass could work for that as well. But the main reason is what I stated before.

If this is honestly the new design, which I highly doubt, it's seems obvious Apple have sacked Jony and not told us. This is NOT one of Jony's designs. He does NOT have so many asymmetrical details.
I'm guessing Apple have finally worked out a strategy of re-directing the public rumor mill. Apple have spoken on several occasions on how they wished they could keep their products much more under wraps as they head towards production, noting it is very hard when you have another company assembling for you, especially when that company has close to 1/2 a million employees.

But hey it could be. Remember how disappointed people were when iPhone 4s was announced, everyone was hoping for a new form factor. That was a pretty good indications of their customers desires.

What "asymmetric details" are you talking about? Apple products exhibit asymmetry all the time.

I really sincerely hope this isn't it. And I don't mean it in the same way that was said when the iPhone 4 design first leaked. That was beautiful.

This? Who the heck wants a taller phone? I want a bigger screen, but I don't want JUST a taller screen.

Such an odd design, why does it need the giant bezels still? Why even bother making glass sections on the back that small? Terrible.

Yeah, surely this can't be it. Sweet merciful Christ SJ is turning in his grave if this is what Apple thinks people will buy...

----------

I actually think this is really good looking. I don't know why everyone else hates it so much.

Because a longer phone does not make a better phone. The whole 2 tone thing is really unlike Apple's simple and elegant designs.

I don't want longer, I want bigger but only proportionally bigger, not elongated and weird looking...

Since you're such a fan of Jobs, here's one of his quotes: "It's not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works."

While we're on Jobs' quotes:

Steve Jobs: “Your phone is the dumbest ****ing idea I have ever heard”

That could also describe this phone if leak is true.

Maybe, and I apologise if someone has suggested this elsewhere, but just maybe, the metal infill is being used in the prototypes or mock-ups, because Apple hasn't actually shown anyone what is going in there.
Perhaps it is a ceramic back, or some other single or two or three part back, that the mock-up or render makers haven't seen, so they are putting a basic metal plate in to "guess" what is coming?

For my two cents worth, thinner is better and a bigger battery is better, making that happen would be making me happy. Bigger screen can be too big, the SIII is too big in my opinion. I have the new iPad for the "big screen experience". And, as a long-shot, I agree, waterproofing or even water-resisting, wow, that'd be a major drawcard.

I want it compact, fast, powerful, long lasting and looking good.
And, in my opinion, and it has been stated by others, the face of the 4/4s is looking dated (I own the 4s) due to the large unused areas around the home button and the speaker.

So, for the new phone (which I will buy), I am hoping for the best and expecting... the best!

I really like the current design, so this just builds on it. If its true i do like the move to metal on the back instead of glass. Less prone to shattering. i hope its thinner too.

I've dropped my iPhone 4 more times than I care to admit and never has the glass broken. Last weekend it fell from my hand at about 4 feet onto my tiled floor of my laundry and still did not break the glass.

How can they call this "Unibody"?!?!

One other thing, how does this design qualify as "unibody??" The screen is raised, the 2-tone back has a gap between the metal and glass. Somebody please explain how this is a unibody design. The current iPod Touch seems to be more unibody than this.

Call me a conservative old fart, but there are 3 thinks I really don't like about it.

1) different screen ratio
2) small dock connector
3) headphone jack on the bottom

But the overall design is very nice.

Regardless, THIS was the most beautiful iPhone concept ever. I really wish it got in production...

Now that's a beautiful looking phone. Sigh a pity it won't come to pass :(

The sides and the central section of the back are one piece.
Apple was granted a patent for fusing metal and plastic so that it is truly seamless and if that is the method being used on the back inserts then that would make the back, sides, top, and bottom essentially one piece.
Only thing truly separate is the mounting system for the front glass.
At least that's my theory.

The phone itself looks great, but my only beef with this pictures legitimacy is the way the screen looks. That light gray "sunk-in" look to it doesn't appear right. The iPhone 4 and 4S have a very deep black appearance to them, even in bright light. This looks like an iPhone 3G-like display that looks far beneath the glass and a light gray.

So perhaps it is a fake? Who knows until the Keynote.:D

But I'm almost positive this is what will be revealed this autumn. Looks good regardless though.

this pretty much sums it up.. which is why apple won't come out with this design, highly unpopular leak. I can't wait for a nice surprise from apple!

However that design relies a lot on the shininess of the plastic used on the back. The renders almost always look good because the designer can choose to make the device shine in the best light with the exact texture/shine. In the actual production, that's impossible, not to mention the fit and finish issues.

Headphone jack on the bottom? If it's real, that sucks.

I disagree, here's why: When you put your iPhone in your pocket, which way does it go? Without headphones in, screen facing your leg, top down right? So it's easy access when you go to get it out. With headphones in, it's opposite, and you have to turn it around upsy-daisy to use it. I think it makes more sense with the jack on the bottom.

Can't Wait.

First: It's a very "handsome" phone. I won't do it the diservice of calling it beautiful.

Second: Thank you, AAPL, for keeping the screen one-handed. I love my one-handed screen. I constantly laugh at people who have to two-hand their gigantaphones. Thank you for not forcing me to be a hypocrit! Taller is just perfect.

Third: Making it perfect widescreen, THAT is beautiful. I hope someone does the math to show how much bigger a wide screen movie is actually going to be on this size/shape screen. On rough guess, you get about a half inch more height plus the roughly inch added to the movie's width from stretching the phone's portrait height.

Fourth: I like the way it looks. That said, I'm not crazy enough to go without a case. I drop / unintentionally-throw my phone far too often not to have a case on it. So no one is going see anything but the screen and the case I choose.

Fifth: Jack on the bottom = great. I really hate having it plugged into a charger on one end and headphones or out to stereo on the other. That's so ugly and tacky. Looking forward to a more bundled cabling experience.

... Overall, I can't wait. Pre-ordering two (wife and I) so we can trade up from our 4S's. And basically everyone else I know is talking about getting "it". ;-) Pre-order night should be a good time -- hope AAPL has some plans to make that smoother than the 4S process I went through! ;-)

I feel like we go through this each time a new iPhone is about to be released. Accurate pics get leaked and everyone rushes to criticize how ugly or useless the design is. Then it gets released and along with the iOS improvements, it sells like gangbusters.

If the back really is two-toned, I'm going to venture a guess that it's there for a specific reason. I read somewhere that NFC requires the absence of metal adjacent to it. So IF there is NFC to be added, perhaps it is at the ends where the black material appears to be plastic. The metal portion then could serve its purpose as part of the inductive charging system.

It would be rather cool if you could just put two iPhones together, back to back, and then transfer photos, videos, music, files, etc. Yes, I know the Galaxy S3 already does this. But since most of my friends (99% - one has a Blackberry from work) have iPhones, this feature would FAR more useful to me in an iPhone. I could care less which company invented what first. What I care is about how it's implemented.

I hope an unlocked version is offered at the outset. If so, I'm in. The new form factor is good enough for me, esp if the photos are accurate and it really is thinner. If they add in NFC, inductive charging, and whole bunch of iOS improvements, that's just a lot of icing on the cake for me.

this is what the new iphone should look like, not these leaks.

Why isn't the front panel sitting flush? It sticks up, making it thicker. Looks weird because it isn't flush too.

To me, for a phone that has otherwise been symmetrical front to back, that edge would offer a degree of blind awareness to the screen orientation. By just pinching the sides, say to remove from your pocket or out of a purse, you would know which way the screen is facing. It's one of those things that you wouldn't give a second thought to but makes a small difference day to day.
