I believe that this is the final retail packaging. These photos look legit.

With that said, I feel the same way with some of the other people here. I'm not a fan of the whole cat thing. I prefer to call OS X by it's version number rather than their code names. I can't wait until they run out of cat name ideas so we can all move on to something better. At least Microsoft is moving away from nonsensical names (xp, vista).

lol I agree :p I'm also not very fond of the cat names either, I would much rather prefer it be called Mac OS 10.6..

Nice try. February 2006. There's not many more days than that in 3 and a half years and I'm not the one trying to find teeny tiny little flaws in a picture that only measuring devices could find.

what's the deal yo?

So is this the final build or is the consensus now that there will be a few more?

I don think I'll bother buying the upgrade as I'll prolly be buying a new mini within the month, yay!

Hopefully it will come bundled with Snow Leopard?

Cheers,
Jed

Sorry, but you need to get out more.

Does it matter what the box looks like? As long as the software works!

I guess you have no clue what this topic is about. (as with the 50 or so others who say the same damn thing)

and umm yeah it does. Would you want to buy OSX with a porn image on it?

I think not.

So please people enough with these comments all they do is make you look stupid. The thread is about packaging. not about Power PC or the fact you dont pay attention to packaging and end up buying the worng item.

7th version of Windows

ummm

  1. Windows 1.0
  2. windows 2.0
  3. windows 3.0
  4. windows 3.1
  5. windows 95
  6. windows 98
  7. windows 98 SE
  8. Windows 2000
  9. Windows ME
  10. Windows XP
  11. Windows vista
  12. Windows 7
So its more like the 12th version.

Best OS Ever.

I didn't say what kind of porn now did I.

Truth is, the point of the packaging design is to be more green friendly, as well a attract the consumer. YOU may know its OSX, but does the average joe know? There are mac users who dont spend all their lives on these tech sites.

That's why that purported packaging is for the "up-to date" program. For people that already have Leopard and a mac.

tell microsoft that. 7th version is what they said why they named it that

This might just be the retail box for Snow Leopard just because of this one simple FACT.

The install icon for 10A432.

Windows 7 is considered the 7th major operating system release from microsoft. Even though it should be considered part of the Vista release (which was version 6), hence the NT version of windows 7 is 6.1

Its not a wrong spelling!!! With the new ortographic reform the agreement is that both "optimizado" , "otimizado", or other example such as: "acção" or "ação" are both CORRECT!!

Nope, the mute consonant "c" was eliminated from Portuguese (as it should):

GRAFIA
No português lusitano:
1. desaparecerão o "c" e o "p" de palavras em que essas letras não são pronunciadas, como "acção", "acto", "adopção", "óptimo" -que se tornam "ação", "ato", "adoção" e "ótimo"

So all in all everything seems very solid and bug-free. Apple have rewritten a lot of the underlying code to allow the OS to move barnacle-free into the next era of development which is great. OSX is now a really mature system which I can't see changing much in the coming years apart from slight cosmetic updates and improvements to the underlying code. It's kind of like Photoshop, there isn't really anything to get excited about in a major update anymore.

Except that adobe leaves a big mess on Your harddisk, similar to norton crap!
Sorry,had to say this.

Hello everybody!

I wonder if they solved the wrong Group ID issue that many (me included, unfortunately) people had upgrading from Tiger to Leopard.
I wonder what would happen upgrading from Leopard with a Tigerized GID to Snow Leopard.....
And I wonder if Repair Permissions is still soooooo slow in Snow Leopard...

:)

After all these posts, we still don't know the build number...
Is it 10A432?
Mystery.

Again, what are you going to do?

So tell us, what are you going to do NOW? What are you going to do now that PowerPC is NEVER coming back? What re you going to do now that there is no significant movement to bring it back? What are you going to do now that Apple is experiencing ZERO PR and sales issues from dropping PowerPC support?

These people complaining about SL not running on PowerPCs seem to forget that Tiger runs without any compatibility problems even on Macs that are 8 years old, like my old iBook G3...what else should they ask for?

This logic is so horribly flawed.

1) This "new" (read: fake) packaging is larger, and therefore consumes more resources, both in terms of materials and fuel consumption for shipping, than the packaging for 10.5. How is that "greener" in any way, shape or form?

2) Your point about attracting the "average joe" is completely self-defeating, because obviously the kind of customer you are referring to - those "who don't spend all their lives on tech sites" (can you exaggerate any more?) - is not going to be affected by any change in packaging, because how are they going to notice a difference if they weren't already familiar with the "old" packaging? In fact, the "average Joe" is exactly the demographic to whom a picture of a Snow Leopard on a box is going to mean the least. Just think about this rationally for a second - ask some "average Joe" with a Mac what OS he runs and he'll tell you OS X. Ask him what version number, and he might not even know. Ask him what "cat" his version is, and he's equally unlikely to be able to answer, so how is a reference to a Snow Leopard going to be more significant to him than a box with a giant X on the front of it? Answer: it isn't.

You also continue to ignore some major concepts in product branding and identity throughout the multitude of misinformed posts that you have made on this subject. There is NO way a sane marketing division would throw away branding they have spent countless $ on and a decade establishing without a *very* good reason. The fact is there is no good reason for them to change their branding strategy for 10.6, and this "new design" is clearly the work of some attention-seeking amateur with an inkjet (and fairly mediocre design skills)

It is flawed in a second manner. Consumers not familiar with OS X should not be purchasing this version of the OS, they should be looking at the retail package that includes iLife etc...
Perhaps the point is to have the 'unfamiliar' consumer NOT look at his packaging.

Why should someone waste his/her time and money creating a fake Snow Leopard box, DVD disc and booklet?
Should be a stupid.

I wish I could see the sides (left and right) of the box.

;)

And the box for the Server version of Snow Leopard...
