Not sure why everyone's emotions are riding high on whether the 5th iPhone will look like the 4 or if it will have a new design. Upgrading the internals is more important than the exterior.

iPhone 4 design with upgraded internals like 8MP camera, A5, 1GB RAM, Assistant, etc = SUCKS!

New design with upgraded internals like 8MP camera, A5, 1GB RAM, Assistant, etc = OMG YAY

The exterior is something you'll appreciate for a few days and then its back to regular iPhone business. But I do sympathize with those that wonder what the hardware team was doing for an extra 4 months if the design was the same.

But in the end, the internals are more important. Think of comparing a 3G to a 3GS today. 3G iPhones are completely crippled, slow, with none of the nice tricks if iOS 4. 3GS can almost do everything an iPhone 4 can do and it will still get iOS 5 and iCloud support.

In the long run, what happens inside will be more important...

A larger screen is something that would hopefully come with a redesign that is something you will appreciate for more than "a few days", probably the duration of your phones existance. Its not multiple color options or changed shape of the home button people are screaming for its a larger screen.

I still think it's a redesigned iPod touch.

ipod touch has always been trickle down technology, it would not get a bigger screen before the iphone does, besides they're forecasting a price drop for the ipod touch, doubt they increase screen size, redesign, AND price drop

Not to sound like a fanboy, but I like it alot. It matches the aesthetics of most of Apples products. It looks very Apple, the only thing is it kinda looks a lot smaller then the others, or is that just me?

It matches the iPad, the iMac look very well, I think the only products that are still supporting Apple's old White plastic motiff is the Airport Extreme and Time Capsules.

It could be worse, it could be a clear plastic case with bondi blue on it.

But seriously, whose to say it doesn't look Apple? As far as I am concerned, a 'sexy' looking phone isn't my priority. It could be UPS brown for all I care, I like the operating system, the apps, the software. Since when was the look of the phone more important then what the phone does? Seriously, remember the first iPhone, the back was fuglyyyyy.

This is exactly why the look of the phone is so important to some. There are definitely people who disliked the original iPhone, but for many people, including myself, the original is still the best design of them all. Sturdy aluminum, curved design felt great in the hand. I would love an original iPhone with an A5 in it.

There is a huge divide between user opinion as it pertains to aesthetic. We can't all agree. Some poeple love the iPhone 4 and think it is the absolute best, while some hate it. I for one think it has its benefits and drawbacks. It is really pretty to look at, and it is obviously meticulously designed. But, I don't want a fragile glass back panel. I also don't like how squared off the i4 is. It doesn't feel good in the hand comparitively to the other more rounded phones.

This and I think it comes to a point where the phone is just too thin. Like really I would rather fit more battery or specs than to keep getting thinner and staying about the same. I want a phone I can hold, not something I can fit in the card slot of my wallet.

As long as...

As long as the specs are aright, who really cares about being sloped or not? Well, okay, some do, I wouldn't. Although it is not a question for me. I got the LTE in March (first customer in local Verizon store) and I will have to wait until March 2013 to renew. Until then, this one will be the "S" model already...

I do hope if they do redesign the case that it is at least as classy as the iPhone 4. I would love a bigger screen though.

The problem with this design is the antenna. All metal chassis would significantly reduce signal, and they can't put it on the outside with that design either.

are people forgetting with an alu back like that it will need a plastic antenna strip ala iphone 1 and ipad 3g?

otherwise nice try

Are people, yourself, forgetting the Apple logo.

Couldn't agree more.

If they want to change it, I'm ok with that. But create a product that looks better than it. This is mediocre by Apple's standards.

Mediocre? How? Because it doesnt have frickin' sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their frickin' heads coming out of the holographic 5" super retina+ display?

....tell me, what are Apple's standards?

I hate the "rectangle" design. Seriously, It's ugly.

No you're ugly!!

Wait... Sorry- that was a little aggressive and uncalled for.

Just- a LITTLE anxious to find out if we are getting a new aluminum backed design with a 4" screen...

I'll leave now... :)

I'm kind of a bit tired of the mockups, in particular the tapered ones. A tapered iPhone is called an iPod touch. Been there done that. I think the iPhone they'll announce on Tuesday will be along the same lines as the iPhone 4, except for a better processor, perhaps more memory, more storage (not likely) and more RAM (not likely), and most likely support for HSPA+. I'm not expecting an earth shattering new hardware release, this time the excitement is in the software side.

I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised somebody spent all that time and money creating a mock-up of a phone based on a rumor. This is Apple, after all. Still, how ridiculous is this? No other phone would get this kind of treatment.

I do rather like this design, though, and hope it's the real thing. We'll see soon enough, I guess. I agree with whoever it was that said they'd rather keep the thing thicker to increase battery life, though, rather than getting thinner and thinner.

Imagine how much battery life and power we'd get out of our laptops if companies like Apple would just keep them the same thickness for two generations, as technology advances.

If the next iPhone looks like that with a 4" screen it will amazing. Amazing. But I'm not getting my hopes up. If you are smart you'll expect a spec update only and be delightfully surprised if we get a redesign.

It looks like a volumetric decrease in size with a slightly increased dimension to length and width, allowing for a larger screen. This means it'd still feel comfortable in a pocket, and be able to stay relevant in a market where larger screens have become standard among high-end smartphones.

The one weakness of the iPhone 4 is its screen size. This is beyond debate. Form factor? Pwns. Camera? Pwns. Performance? Still fantastic - ZERO complaints about the iPhone 4's speed. How fast does a phone NEED to be anyways? Even data speed is very acceptable. 4G would be nice, but again, how fast does your mobile phone need to be? It's extremely useful as is.

Upgrading a bunch of things that do not need upgrading is not going to motivate people to buy. Upgrading that which DOES need upgrading will. I'm going to place a hedge bet on Apple's stock the morning of October 4th.

My 2 cents.........

A5
ios5
iPhone5
5" screen
Start sale oct.5

Looks like mini iPad mockup

iPhone4 Will stay as low end iPhone

Lets talk iPhone is spoken as "Lets talk, iPhone" (ios5)

Simple as that ;)

Honestly out of all the designs I've seen, I like this one best. It should be a dream to hold and gives the appearance of being smaller than it is. Apple does have to cram a lot of guts inside this thing, and this design should allow them to do that. The extreme teardrop shape we've seen tossed around is pretty awful, wouldn't be comfortable in the hand, and generally did not make the sort of bold design statement Apple likes to make. The iPhone 4, while beautiful, did lead to Antennagate. I personally thought wasn't a big deal, but it seemed clear to me at the time that Apple would reconsider their design just to prevent the appearance of it happening again with the next iPhone.

In the end, though, does it really matter? I'll very likely be getting one, and when I do, I'll be sticking it inside a case ;). I want something I can clip to my belt, and won't get damaged if I drop it, because I will. As the iPhone gets smaller, sleeker, and made out of less impact-resistant materials, the case just needs to be more sturdy around it, and big enough that you can actually hold the thing comfortably.
