Notice how no one answered this post. That's what those insisting on a 4" display don't want to think through.

There would be huge tradeoffs in migrating to a bigger screen: either losing the Retina branding or screwing the developers by adding more pixels.

Sorry, but that's not exactly "screwing" developers. Yeah, they'd have to post an update for it, but it's not like it's all that big a deal. They've already got 3 resolutions to develop for. ...more if they also develop for fandroid. BFD, I say.

...even if they kept the resolution and increased screen size, the pixels would be nearly impossible to see.

I hope, for the sake of your family and any children you may have in the future, that you're joking about hoping I was joking.

We're a couple of jokers, joking about jokes.

At least I think so. I guess my child is supporting evidence of my jokerishness, as she already has a spectacular intellect :D

That being said, there are definitely posters who _are_not_ joking ... but should be :)

It's been great that groups of people have been able to make digital renderings of the tapered iPhone 5, but when you see the a physical mockup like this, it's really really awesome! Kudos to the people who made this!

I hope this mockup is as close as the iPad 2 mockup was earlier in the year. That thing was right on the money!

So it look like an iPad2. WOW what a stretch it was to think that would happen! I figured this from the beginning and I LIKE IT! More so if they go with the matte metal back! Of course we don't really know until you know, we know!

are people forgetting with an alu back like that it will need a plastic antenna strip ala iphone 1 and ipad 3g?

otherwise nice try

I've always loved the look of the plastic strip on the back of 3G iPads and felt that the wifis looked boring

Aren't all the iPhones "rectangular"? :p

If one wanted to be even more of a smartass and play with details, he could argue that a rectangle is a quadrilateral, whereas iPhones are rounded rectangles. Rounded means there are arcs of a circle at each corner, meaning infinite number of sides = not a rectangle. :p

Seriously though, his point was more that the radius of each rounded corner is smaller, making it more look like a rectangle. I tend to agree that's it's not as good looking, and Apple tries to keep design consistency across their products. Notice how all rounded corners on Macs, iPods, iPhones, iPads, chargers, Apple TV, Airport Extreme/Express, well all Apple products in fact, have the same relative corner radius compared to the device size. No Apple product have sharp edges like that.

Jonny Ive wouldn't approve. ;)

I hate the "rectangle" design. Seriously, It's ugly.

Would you prefer a triangle? Seriously, how do you propose they design it? Round?

----------

I had some speculations that the iPhone 5 wouldn't look "Apple" enough, but this confirms my thoughts that the iPhone 5 will NOT look like that. That looks nothing what Apple would do with a phone.

Yet they would make an iPad that looks exactly like that huh?

If it's going to be just a bump in performance count me out! I will stick with my 4 until I see some more upgrades and the aluminum back.

Its like a 1st gen iPhone and current gen iPod touch had sex.
This was their child.
No?
Just me?

NO, it doesn't resemble the the iPod touch. The touch is shiny and has rounded edges and it only resembles the iPhone 1 in material used on the back.

A better comparison would be it looking like a mini iPad. Exact same design, just on a smaller scale

it cant be it... there is no antenna... if the backing is aluminium as we have seen and heard... it wont let cellular signal go through. Remember original iphone and 3g ipads. So this design only represents size...

That is what I was going to say, but regardless it looks nice. There is one thing I hope for the next iPhone, this is that they don't use the "assistant" as the thing they advertise that makes it different from the iPhone4. I hope apple has somthing besides that up there sleeve or I'll be disappointed, I'm not talking about a minor spec bump either I want somthing to wow me.

I wonder if Samsung is suing because the iPhone 5 will look similar to the latest Galaxy thingamabob? and maybe this is why no one has seen the iPhone 5 yet?

quite honestly, i don't think i want a thinner phone. the iPod touch 4th gen seemed too thin to hold already. it needs a bit of heft to feel like it won't break from just holding it.

I'm not sure what length would be required for acceptable reception, but it'd be real slick if they used the camera aperture, and buttons as antenna ports.

And it'd still be on par with the current IP4 antenna reception. ;)

I know it's been said a hundred times, but I'm going to say it again. A late-to-market, uninspired "iPhone 4S" will be a major disappointment - a sentiment which sales figures will reflect in a tangible way.

I don't care what they call it. Hell, it could be called the iPhone Glittery Pink Unicorn for all I care. Just because they call it a "4S" doesn't mean it's going to be a minor update.

And considering the 18 month old iPhone 4 still outsells the competition, I don't really believe that sales figures will suffer.

Joking aside, I love this look if the iPhone5 does indeed resemble these mockups, it looks very Android in a good way, the Galaxy S II looks very modern and cool, I like an all black slab and sharp edge, is a masculine and bad ass design.

A 4" screen isn't bad either, would prefer just a tad larger like 4.2" would be spot on perfect size, not too big nor too small.

Throw in Widgets in the stock OS, and I will leave Android and go back to an iPhone.

But first before any decision lets see the Nexus-Prime, October 11th.

Kind of funny you try to point out the users incorrect spelling of the word "heart, then proceed to write "bye the way" instead of "by the way", moron. If you're gonna try to point something out, why not spell correctly yourself?

Coop, I don't troll and I don't call people names and I don't point out spelling errors unless it is in good fun - like attempting to start a chain as in hair/hare hart/heart. "Bye" the way, was to demonstrate that no one here is hard over on spelling - as you will learn as you progress beyond newbie.

Wow! Macrumors is going hard this time.

Just imagine if the real one looks uglier than this, we're gonna have some problems. :p

I dislike the tapered design. It's not going to be as easy to holdin the hand as the current design, and it's also harder to make good slider cases for it.

I love the current iPhone 4 design. I hope the iPhone 5 is an evolution of this design, rather than going back to the older designs with the tapered/curved backside.

There's a reason I didn't buy an iPhone until the 4. They finally got everything right in my eyes.
