Can anyone tell me how Apple can put all the stuff of iPhone in this thin package? Or a better question, Can you hold it comfortably in Landscape because I can't do that with an iPod Touch( read: too much thin).

iPhone 5 Design

Can't believe they are going back to the rounded case. iPhone 4 is so much easier to handle with the square edges. I was actually hoping the iPad 3 would be block design as the iPhone 4.

Count me in with the troops that will be happy with a 4S with all the expected upgrades, but with a slightly larger screen.

If the Apple logo was a viable option for the antenna, why would Apple not use that in the iPad instead of the black plastic strip?

Young grasshopper, they have many different antennas all throughout the current iPad. Not just in the strip.

See here, and here for past patents in future portable devices, and here for current usage in the iPad 2.

I won't be upgrading unless the next piece of hardware has a larger screen. The other stuff just isn't enough for me to fork over the cash. My iPhone 4 is just fine; especially since I've jailbroken it.

You want to know the no 1 reason it will happen?

While being popular for taking photos is indeed important for Apple, the reason that it is popular, isn't because they make the best camera phone, not even close. Instead, the iPhone is popular as a camera simply because so many have iPhones. And as a survey said the other day, well over 50% would consider buying an iPhone 5, but not a refreshed iPhone 4.

So, yes, it's important that it works well as a camera, but it's a lot more important to actually sell iPhones.

I'm inclined to agree with you, because Apple does want the iPhone to be popular. But frankly, Apple actively disregards the only evidence you cite (i.e. market research of any kind). Apple has long been in the business of making decisions for the consumer and not vice-versa.

Meanwhile, my argument follows from something Apple actually does do, which is value functionality and aesthetics in tandem - along with values they've stated themselves (i.e. making the iPhone amazing for taking pictures).

why do people make mockup's? what a waste of time.

I agree slightly. I can see the added value of a rendered mockup, but going through all the trouble of actually making a cad model and subsequently machining the thing out of aluminum seems a bit too much effort for a rumor that has only been viewed as valid because some Chinese case manufacturers decided this is the next iPhone shape..

Well it put their website on the map anyway... I guess they earned their investment back on the website ads..

The irony of this is... you think they are a waste of time yet used your time to come into a thread that clearly states mockups in the title to tell us all its a waste of time

Ehhhh, don't really like it. BUT that doesn't mean anything.

When I saw the iPhone4 from the Bar, I thought it looked ugly then too. But I have one now and love the look of it.
Maybe it was the Apple Marketing or something I got used to quickly enough and that made me think the rounded and smoothed look was "old" looking. I was a bit disappointed when the iPad2 came out and looked "old" to me. I still think I somewhat prefer the iPad1 look to the iPad2.

But having the iPhone 4, I am not in the market for a phone now. It doesn't matter how good the specs are, I'm going to wait. And funny seeing some on here say "if it doesn't have 'x' I wont be buying the new iPhone, I'll stick with my iP4" the iPhone 4 is still a good smartphone.

And since Apple/Verizon just released theirs in early 2011 and the iPhone 4 WHITE came out in spring, I wouldn't think Apple would "disappoint" those new owners with a new iPhone so close, maybe Apple just wanted to have more people buy those VeriPhones and WhiPhones.

Samsung would have a field day with that proposed iPhone 5 design. The Galaxy S and Galaxy S II both have elongated home buttons. For Apple to 'copy' them with one would seriously undermine all the current, worldwide litigation.

Hope these mockups are close true. (either like this or the other ones we have seen in the past). Was never a fan of the iPhone 4 design, and if I remember when mockups of that one came out people hated the "ice cream sandwich" design as well. I honestly think none of you people are ever happy and just look for things to complain about. "It's not a 4s..... There is no 5..... It's going to be a 4s..... There will be a 5.... It's ugly...... If apple does this......" ok, we get it. Do ya really have to hit every thread and re-hash you're point. Most of us come here a lot (enough to at least know where the threads are) so we have seen your points a MILLION times.

Anyway if it's a "4s" type of upgrade I'll be getting it or if it's a totally redesigned 5 I'll get it. Aesthetics are nice and all but it's about what it does, how it works and what it can do for me that gets my $$$. Personally I'll be a little bummed if they don't come out with a slightly bigger screen because I am envious of some of the smart phones out there with em (maybe because I'm old as dirt now lol) but I'll get it anyway. I like my 4 with the iOS 5 beta and from what I have seen of iCloud in beta it's a rock solid for my little Apple only setup so boosting the ram, chipset, camera etc would be enough of a reason for me to grab one, and hell if it's a totally redesigned similar to the mockups that's even better.

5" screen

It's more likely we'll hear Tim Cook say they're licensing OSX for clones than seeing a 5" phone. The required form factor would be GIGANTIC (ever held a Dell Streak?).

Not too mention it would drop the PPI by over 100, assuming the same 960x640.

I think it's pretty slick :)

To be honest, once you have the equipment, it's not as labor intensive as you might think. A buddy of mine builds custom parts for high[er] end sailboats, and he has a whole CAD/CAM/Tool/Die/Cutting setup, where he can go from drawing to component prototype pretty quickly.

I'd say if they have the equipment, what's a little time if it's intended to generate traffic (and I'm sure that will, at least for a few more days :D )

this is clearly fake...it doesn't even have iOS5 running. you guys are so gullible.

I hope you're joking, of course it's fake (as in not the Apple OEM product), some guys used a computer controlled tooling/cutting machine to make the aluminum chassis and glued a display on it, based on all the prototype data.

Honestly, I think this mockup looks great! For people saying its ugly, you're probably the same people who said the iPhone 4 looked hideous.

I hope, for the sake of your family and any children you may have in the future, that you're joking about hoping I was joking.

I don't see a reason for a redesign, unless the OS features or a display change demand it. I liked that the iPhone3G and 3GS shared the same body design. It helped ensure compatibility with various docks and cases.

I understand the desires for a bigger screen, but what about the resolution of the bigger screen? Would be it the same 960x640 resolution on a larger display? Wouldn't that degrade the Retina marketing? And if they increased the resolution, wouldn't app makers have to rescale their software again to handle 3GS, 4, iPad, and 5 all having different resolutions?

I'd appreciate an explanation on how this stuff works!

Notice how no one answered this post. That's what those insisting on a 4" display don't want to think through.

There would be huge tradeoffs in migrating to a bigger screen: either losing the Retina branding or screwing the developers by adding more pixels.

Hopefully not, out of the three I think it's the ugliest one. Out of all the mock ups I've seen, I think there was one that I liked, all others were IMO a step back in terms of design.

For the record, i think it's ugly and I never said IP4 was hideous. <~~ that's for the person a few posts above who seems upset that some people don't like the mock up design.

There are still unanswered questions like the one above, the antenna issue with an all aluminum back, etc. etc.

They will all be answered next Tuesday!!!!!

As to the mockup... I like it. The wide home button was something I thought hideous at first but seeing it done like this I quite like it.
