it appears that Sony opted to have an SLI type setup utilizing current PS4 hardware in the PS4 Pro. So current and non upgraded games will use nearly identical hardware as they are now. Which means it's unlikely there will be any bump in performance at all. So current drops in FPS will still exist even on the new PS4 Pro.

I was reading something about older games not seeing a real boost. That's disappointing.

No, it can render 4K dependent on game / developers

Some games will run 4K, others may use 1440-1800p and then upscale to 4K, but that's still a massive increase over 1080p

Other games may keep 1080p but utilise additional power for better Frame rates or enhanced post processing.

But yes, some games will indeed be 4K

The pro also has an extra 1gb ram for its graphics pool ...
8 total, right?

Just curious to see what others think is a good 4K TV with HDR specifically for gaming and the new Gen consoles coming? I was reading Samsung is using 8 Bit HDR, which is considered dated and being replaced by HDR10. Anyone with any knowledge on this?

It probably depends on the TV specifically.

I have a Samsung KS9000 which is supposedly HDR10 (10 bit). It would seem this is the standard manufactures are shooting for. Dolby Vision is 12 bit, so a step up. And since it's higher and HDR10 is an open standard TV that are capable of Dolby Vision can do HDR10 provided a firmware update.

LG with their latest OLED TVs is capable of both.

I chose the Samsung due to its low response time which is IMO the most important thing when it comes to gaming. It's truly a balancing act between features, specs, stats, and cost when buying a 4K HDR tv. For example, while the LG had a higher response time then the Samsung its picture is arguably better (compared side by side and it's not a massive difference) but to get it with the same features and size as my Samsung was nearly 3000 dollars MORE then the Samsung (at time of purchase).

I made a quick video showing the difference between HDR10 and no HDR if you are interested. The only way to show it since I can't broadcast it nor could you see it without an HDR TV was to take a still image with a camera then show them back to back. That's on my Samsung KS9000.

I chose LG 2016 HDR 4K because it is Dolby Vision capable ... tbh though after watching 6 4K HDR movies on UHD-BluRay, I do think there is a lot of 'over hype' for HDR and tbh outside of games, movie wise I find it difficult to see much of a difference because films are so post processed and with added digital grain and such, the jump from 1080p seems quite small compared from the jump from 480 to Full HD

No 4k Blu ray player = no purchase from me. Why on earth was it not included in the pro when the Xbox S has it? Ridiculous decision.

Maybe...maybe not. We'll need to see how this plays out...

Analysts like Michael Pachter are saying that MS will be in for a rough time if the Xbox Project Scorpio can't get to market for $399. "Committing suicide" was Pachter's direct quote. My thoughts do start to align with his...what's the point of buying a console when I can build a PC for better performance and a cheaper price strictly for gaming?

If that is indeed the case then Sony really backed MS into a corner, because not only do they have to deliver a 6 teraflop console (as already advertised) it needs to have a UHD BD player (like the Xbox 1S) AND come to market for $399.

Sony will then do the obvious, drop the PS4 Pro to $349 just before the XBox Project Scorpio releases.

I can't find the YouTube video but people from MS were shocked by the 399 dollar price for the PS4 Pro already. Which means they were likely anticipating to compete with a 449-499 price point.

While you and I do think this it's a ridiculous decision I'm starting to understand the logic behind it. The console wars rage on...lol

Thoughts on this TV I purchased for gaming from Best Buy? It was on sale. Thanks for your feedback.

I couldn't find much on response time although I think the KU series is good. However that set doesn't have 10 bit HDR so it's not up to the HDR10 standard. Samsung advertises their HDR10 as HDR 1000. Which means 1000 nits...to further add to the confusion manufacturers are creating. The do put in their specs "10 bit HDR" if it has it though.

Preordered my Playststion 4 Pro today:D. My local GameStop said preorders are steady, but not crazy. Likely to increase with the holidays coming.

The fact most people still have 1080p screens and it will take a good number of years before 4K tv's are standard means the enthusiasm for 4K optimised gaming hardware is going to take maybe a few years and likely till 'the next' proper ps5 before they have the sales / drive (uptake) as the first PS4.

PS4 Pro and Scorpio will be for the early adopters ... I still expect XB1 slim and PS4 slim regular versions to sell more than Scorpio and PS4 Pro.

I'm looking forward to getting mine, a load of my games are already receiving patches so will have a nice amount of content from day 1 :)

Where the industry is leading is 4K. Cable, satellite, gaming all are heading in this direction. 4K is just lifting off in terms of better and higher quality resolution.

The days of AV Cables and analog ports are gone. The TV industry isn't even including these ports anymore, as consoles have already made this clear with HDMI.

I heavily researched this topic for months. If someone is going to invest 4K, then invest in a 4K experience worth the price tag and stay away from low end 4K, it's not the answer. And my preferences were HDR 10/Dolby Vision, being 8 Bit is actually dated in some respects.

The PlayStation Pro is the next step and ALL 2017 Games will be redefined with these measures. I read an article where the developers were actually producing the Pro a week later after the initial release of the PS4.

I also think some are waiting to see what the Scorpio has to offer. But I'm impartial to Sony and the Pro. I'm excited to see what's to come and the Sony made it evident at their Keynote what to expect.

Did you preorder the Pro? Is that what you meant by getting yours?

I think the Xbox One and PS4 Slim will do well during the holidays, but they are also currently widely available, where the Pro and Scorpio are not available and gamers have not invested in these consoles yet. I think it's logical to think 4K HDR and Pro/Scorpio now, being its a safe bet to future proof your investment. And these developers will be placing emphasis on this.

It seems some gamers have been upset with Sony deleting the Optical Port on the Slim, which is a factor if you had wireless surround to the head unit. The Pro does have the Optical Out.

Yeah I pre-ordered the day they were announced ...

I'll be trading in my old PS4 and a game (likely overwatch as i have it on xb1 too) and the PS4 Pro will then be €145, but as I've already paid €50 deposit, it means I only have €95 to pay :)

1080p users will enjoy better textures, framerates, and draw distances with these new consoles - I can see the difference with PC gaming which lets you choose the graphics quality...

Digital Foundry latest video on the PS4 Pro

Skyrim Remastered is running at a native 4K. I guess that's not too surprising due to the games age. Surprisingly though Richard mentions in the video that foliage draw distance may also be seeing an upgrade.

I'm going to try to trade my PS4 in for a PS4 Pro on Friday at GameStop if they have any stock available. Depending on stock I might also buy a PS4 Pro at Best Buy and sell my PS4 on Craigslist, or even someone on here if you are looking for a 2nd gen PS4 500gb, with controller, in the original box with COD Black Ops 3. :D :D

I don't have a 4k TV and I have no plans to get one anytime soon, but I will upgrade to the PS4 Pro and Scorpio (but skip XB1-slim) eventually when just the right trade-in deal comes around. I don't feel the need to get either of these consoles day one.

I plan on trying to take a couple screen shots of the differences in games I currently have (Skyrim, ESO and Fallout 4).

I'll post them here so people can see if the differences are worth updating for. Along with my real experience opinion. Since it seems like most games are going for resolution (something I'm not that sensitive too) and not FPS (something I'm very sensitive too) I think my opinion will be relatively unbiased and critical.

I'm all set too :) looks like a good share of my existing games catalogue are getting updates which I'm surprised about.

So far I have ..

Infamous 2 & Fast Light
Titanfall 2
Ratchet & Clank
Skyrim
Shadow of Mordor
Deus Ex Mankind
Fallout 4
The Last of Us Remastered
Uncharted 4
Rise of the Tomb Raider

:)

That's a good list! I think I'm going to pick up Deus Ex and ROTR once I'm tired of Skyrim. Both look really good but I think I'm going to go with Deus Ex first, what do you think?

I stopped by GameStop on my way home from work and pre ordered the Pro. Manager said currently there was no trade in bonus for the PS4 when trading for the PS4 Pro but said he wouldn't be surprised if they did though. That would be the icing on the cake for me. Currently the trade in is 150, which I'm good with, more is better though!

That is the special - normally, a PS4 is $125 in trade...

Picking Up my Pro on Wedesnday. The PS4
$150.00 is good through December in My local GameStop region. At least that's what that the Store manager stated. Preorders are slower, which is a good thing, being this would help retain the value of the original value of the PS4 for while for those contemplating making the trade.

The first review I read (vg247) stated that the pro is no louder than the launch PS4, regarding fan noise. As some of the launch models could get VERY loud, this has me concerned.

I'll be very curious to hear what you early adopters will report! :)

Can't believe that you don't get the decent trade in prices that we get here.

I'm essentially getting €255 for my PS4 & an old game when trading in for the PS4 Pro.

Do they advertise this openly on their website, or is it something you have to ask for in the store?

I have the 2nd generation PS4 and it's virtually silent. My NAS less than a foot away is quiet but you can hear it's fan if you stop and listen.

Anyway what I did is I downloaded a decibel meter app. Booted up my PS4 into Skyrim and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then put my phone where I normally keep controller, microphone pointing in.

IMG_0613.jpg

Let that sit for 5 minutes.

Ignore "Max", thats from pressing the button and setting the phone down. The center is real time and peak appears to be some sort of average. You can see from the graph sound was at a steady state.

I realize this "app" isn't an accurate way of measuring dB however it will give us a slightly more scientific way of comparison.

I'll repeat this "test" (lol) once I get the Pro.

It's been $150 for over 3 months now when I have gone in store and looked online. I dont think thats special so I hope they improve it a little if the Pro reserves are low but I doubt they go much higher than $150.
