While it may very well have been click bait, I hope the Digital Foundry article regarding 1080p framerate issues with the Pro on certain games will gain enough traction so developers will start making 1080p/60FPS top priority on the Pro.

I will take 1080p/60FPS over 2160p/30FPS any day of the week!

I'm on the fence. I think it depend on the game. Skyrim for example the controls are so floaty I like the native 4K plus the scenery looks so nice.

60 FPS with better anti aliasing would be a compromise I'm ok with.

It appears the vram or lack thereof is going to prevent us from seeing better texture quality. Which is a double edge sword anyway, because I think we wouldn't see that due to the amount of work required to implement it.

I FINALLY got around to setting this up as I was removing my TV from above the fireplace (really hated it there but wife liked the aesthetics of it) and put it back to eye level.

2 things stood out for me instantly with the move.

1. The TV seems massive now (its a Samsung JS8500 65 inch) and I am in love with my TV all over again
2. It looks even better as the angle and viewing fields are so crystal clear now that I am again, in love all over

With that being said, after setting up the PRO, downloading all my games, and tweaking themes and other little details to my liking I played about a half hour of Journey on it and I was mesmerized.

I know this isn't PS4 Pro enhanced but never played it and it was in my backlog of PS+ Freebies but man I am looking forward to some other titles!!

One thing I am concerned is that the design of where it is leaves little ventilation in the back to release the hot air so may buy a little fan or something. It was burning hot after an hour or so of being on and barely gaming.

Yeah I played Titanfall 2 for a few minutes and it got very hot. Hotter than the old launch PS4 from what I remember.

Same here. Never understood the craze of mounting a TV above the fireplace, totally impractical. I am definitely in the minority here, but when this house was built, I specifically told the builder no fireplace. We will probably pay the price for not having it when it's time to sell, but to me it's a waste of wall space, wouldn't have had room for the 70" I have there now with the fireplace lol, and mounting above is a huge no no for me.

My Pro barely gets warm, strange that yours gets hot. Maybe it's based on the load on the CPU? Or a game that's requires intensive processing.

For mine it has to be location. The space is plenty big but the Pro is so deep that it doesn't leave much room in the back for ventilation and it backs into the wood of the entertainment center. There is no other place to put it though so a mini fan when utilizing it seems to the best.

Are there internal safeguards such as powering down or pausing if it gets absolutely too hot before it melts or something built in by Sony? I know i wont reach that point but curious.

I also use a heat resistant Poly foam stand under the Pro, which allows air to travel under the unit, thus keeping it cooler. Small investment, but worth it.

Pics or where did you get it?

Thanks...

Here is the Amazon price and availability. It works really well and takes very little space up.

Yeah the whole idea of buying tech to 'future-proof' yourself is sadly nonsense. No sooner as you have everything ready to rumble, there is always something new and better in the wings that requires different hardware or is software incompatible with your existing device.

I think at least in terms of owning new tech that was just released, more specifically consoles, at least gives the gamer to the advantage to utilize the potential Of what their TV's can do. It's like owning a PS4 Pro and using only a tube television, you would never be able to fully appreciate its true capabilities. Hence, why purchasing the latest technology can put you a few years ahead, being most won't upgrade the way others do.

But yes, even though, I own the latest high tech 4K TV, Samsung is already developing the next big thing.

No, not even close. The One S is finely on par with the current PS4 performance wise. The PS4 Pro is ~2.5x performance bump over that.

All the Xbox One S is doing is upscaling to 4k whereas the PS4 Pro is rendering at higher resolutions specifically implemented by the developers.

It does however have the added ability of a UHD BD player though which is nice.

The next Xbox currently codenamed Project Scorpio due out late 2017 is supposed to be a powerhouse.
Sony has made a big mistake not to include a UHD BD player. For some this will be a reason not to buy it.

TBH as someone who upgraded their XB1 to a XB1 S for UHD BD player, I actually don't mind the fact its not in the PS4 Pro as I was thoroughly unimpressed with the supposed better quality UHD BD brought. I have a few titles now with HDR support and the movies also come with the standard Blu-ray in the box too, and watching the UHD BD and then switching to the 1080p BD - the difference is very subtle and nothing like the leap from DVD to Blu-Ray.

Given also that most people are streaming content these days, the fact that many of the TV apps will support 4k streaming on the PS4 Pro mitigates the missing UHD player somewhat.

Had Sony released the PS4 Pro at €100/$100 more for the UHD player, I think the take up of the pro would be far less than €399/$399 it retails for currently. $499 would be a tougher sell even with UHD blu-ray

Might be pointing out the obvious here, but the whole industry is setup to keep people in an endless upgrade loop. When I bought the first cheapo LG 4K TV, I had to dump my perfectly good Denon 3313CI receiver because it lacks HDMI2.0. Skip back a bit further, I had to dump another perfectly good receiver because it didn't pass 3D signal. It has been that way for many years now, upgrade one piece, the AV receiver needs to be replaced.

Admittedly I was initially disappointed it didn't have a UHD player but in reality I have no intention of buying any UHD BD. Just too much money for a movie plus all my movies (200+) are stored digitally. I'm more interested in a UHD BD drive and software so I can rip them.

I can understand Sonys logic too. It's a gaming system. Analysts are saying for Microsofts next system to be competitive it's going to need to come to market for 399.

So in theory Sony backed MS into a corner. They need to make a 6 teraflop system with a UHD BD player all for 399.

By the time Project Scorpio releases Sony will drop the current Pro to ~349. And have the option for a UHD BD version.
[doublepost=1479305969][/doublepost]As far as heat goes I can tell my PS4P is running a little warmer than my PS4 was. This is of course obvious due to higher TDP.

Initially my original PS4 fans would be very loud, I found it recirculating it's exhaust back into the intake. What I did was slide it to the left a few inches and slightly slid the shelf out above about 1" so it's exhaust wouldn't interfere with its intake.

I did the same thing with the PS4P. While the fan is louder it's only noticeable if I pause a Pro enhanced game and carefully listen for it. If I were to guess judging by the sound of my original PS4 recirculating my PS4P fan is running at ~25% of its maximum.

If your PS4P is running hot I would suggest moving to the top of your entertainment center just to test it. If it's quieter then arrange your entertainment system accordingly.

Well, Microsoft has a year to wait for or make component prices come down. I'm just make stuff up here. A GTX1070 is $379 right now. In a year's time it should be well under $300, maybe even $200 when it closes out. So it shouldn't be entirely impossible for Microsoft to do 6TFLOPS for $400.

I don't know how exactly the laser differs on a UHD Bluray drive from a regular Bluray drive, but I bought an LG Bluray drive for a PC a little while back. It is able to read the UHD movie I put in it, although no PC player exists to play it. The drive was $40, same as earlier models that couldn't read UHD discs. It could just all be firmware. I feel Sony didn't enable UHD movie playback is more a strategy to push people to their 4K streaming service.

A lot of my post was speculation, based on analyst speculation.

What I also saw (I need to find the interviews) was a few MS employees were shocked at the 399 price tag to begin with. Which would indicate they were already expecting to compete at a much higher price point.

Personally though I find value in high spec'd equipment. If the PS4P was even higher spec say for example 5 teraflop with 12gb of vram but cost 499 or even 549 I would have bought it. Matter of fact I would have preferred it.

But I guess I'm probably a vast minority when it comes to console gaming. Because honestly if you think about 500+ price point is pushing into the custom build (diy) PC market. Sure it won't be the best gaming rig but if done right should be as good if not better then a console. And I think that is what Sony is trying to avoid.

The industry might be set up to for consumers to upgrade with technology, but it really depends on what the consumer wants and when. For me, I want the latest and greatest, being I'm a gamer and I'm heavily into tech.

Others will keep their tube television from the 90's as long as possible, because they either don't care or they are intimated by all the technical aspects they don't understand with the latest technology. There really is no in between.

I think when consumers do upgrade away from outdated technology, there shocked to find out that Audio/video inputs are deleted off the Newer TV's, forcing them to use the latest with HDMI. But the same could be said about anything with technology when it comes to upgrading. It's just a matter of adjusting.

Which comes with a price point. Like you stated, some have said they were shocked by Sony not including the BD player. That being said, sales will be stronger with the Pro, being its only a $100.00 more to upgrade. I think this was a smart move by Sony, where, some may have been turned away by the price hike with the BD player. I also believe physical media is slowly being phased out, where as digital media is becoming main stream. But there is still a market for physical media none the less.

That being said, when the Scorpio does release, Sony will likely have the competitive edge with price point and more exclusive titles. I think long term, Sony is smart enough to realize they made the right move.

Seen some reports of high heat development in the Pro. Early adopters, what's your experience? Does it run hotter than the normal PS4s? How loud do the fans get when the unit heats up?

I have not had the Pro run "Hot." I can tell you from what I have read, more graphically intense games that push the limits on the Pro have had reports of higher heat. But I also keep my Pro well ventilated and elevated for air to flow under the console.

When you say physical media is being phased out you are not considering the new UHD BD disc that support ATMOS and DTS X audio. If you are into home theatre and you have a 4K system buying the PRO will mean you have to spend another $400 or so on a separate UHD BD player.

So would it be a safer bet for someone who wants the BD Player, to wait for the Scorpio then. The BD player doesn't interest me, perhaps for others, it does in the scenario listed in your post.
