Took this right after the 20% warning. Usage was mostly streaming audio over 3G and wifi, plus some light internet, phone, and location services. 3G and wifi on, push, bluetooth and location services off, screen at 50%. I continue to be very impressed with the iPhone's battery life compared to other 3G devices...

When I got up this morning my usage was almost the same as standby. I also had this problem with 2.0 and then I installed 2.01 and then I did not see the problem again until this morning. I did the turn everything off to try and see what was causing it. Could not figure it out. I have been running with everything on for a number of days without problems so I am thinking something gets stuck or maybe gets into a loop and then this problem happens. It would be nice to be able to see what features are busy. Maybe a frequent power reset would help.

Someone else here feels the problem is related to Push Email. I don't find that to be the case. I was running Yahoo Push for the first year on v1 and for the most part did not have this problem. I did see it a few times but I think a new firmware release helped. After 2.0 (on v1 phone) I started using MobileMe Push Email (with contacts and calendar) and did not see the problem at all. I then got the 3G prhone and within a couple of days I saw this problem. My battery did not seem good for the first few days. Then 2.01 came out and I installed it and the problem did not occur until this morning (can't remember how many days ago 2.01 came out).

4 hours spent on Safari, YouTube and maybe 30 minutes on the phone.

This is taken at the 20% warning so I probably could've gone an extra hour or so of usage out of it.

  • Wi-Fi off, EDGE off, 3G on.
  • 1 or 2 GPS use on Google Maps.
  • Brightness at 30%, Auto-Brightness on.
  • Location Services off except when needed.
  • Push off, Fetch at 30 minutes intervals.
  • Bluetooth off

Here's my usage:

WiFi, Edge and 3G - ON
Location service - ON
Bluetooth - OFF
Push - ON
Fetch Data - OFF
Brightness at 30% with auto-brightness OFF

Loaded a few maps with the GPS, checked a lot of emails, few text messages, calls on 3G, downloaded 2 aps update over 3G

Blah, thats the longest its lasted for me !
There was one day I went to work, really busy day (Starbucks ) , i started at 9:30, left at 2, i took the phone off the charger around 9 and had it in my pocket till i left.
I checked the battery, and i had 20%
Tried swapping but the Genius said he needed more "data" so i have to go back in sometime this week.

3G - On
Wifi - Used in the house for maybe 15 min because i had no 3G service.
GPS - Used for maybe 20 - 30 min.
Some texting & Safari.
Couple short calls.
Push - Off
Fetch - 30 Min.

I really don't think there's anything wrong with 24 hours of standby and 4-5 hours of usage.

That seems to be the norm.

Not good?

This really seems quite low to me as compared to the rest of you.. all I did was make a few short phone calls, some sparse 3G web browsing, used the GPS for about five minutes, and no iPod playing. Should I be concerned?

My usage is mostly WiFi Internet and Email checking. I've got a decent amount of standby which I'm guessing is the reason my usage appears low.

You have to remember that for many people, their usage might include listening to music and a variety of other options that will vary greatly from person to person.

If you want a true battery test, turn everything off but Edge, put your brightness on halfway and play video after a full charge to see if it compares with Apple's estimates. The reason I say video instead of using the iPod is because it's a shorter test.

So what accounts for the three hours of usage? Also, what other features (push, wifi, bluetooth, etc.) were activated?

Push is on (though there's nothing to Push since I don't use Exchange or MobileMe - Fetch is set to 1 hour), Wi-Fi is on, Bluetooth is off, 3G is on, auto-brightness is on, location services is on. I'd say the 3 hours was maybe 15 minutes of wi-fi web browsing, 10 minutes of 3G browsing, 5 minutes of GPS, 15 minutes of SMSing, and the rest was various (usually short) phone calls or putzing around with some apps. I didn't really keep close tabs on usage since I wasn't planning on testing it, per se, but at the end of the day I felt it was worth a screenshot a quick posting to you fine ladies & gents. I'll give the EDGE+video playback a try to see how it fares. Thanks guys.

Turn off push, wifi, and location services. According to Apple's own documentation, these will all affect battery life. I'm guessing they continue to draw energy even when not in active use. For example, even if push isn't connected to a network, it may still be sending authentication pulses, wifi may periodically be searching for nearby base stations, etc.

Also, how good is your 3G reception? The phone will burn a lot of battery trying to hold onto a weak 3G signal.

Here's my usage for a 2-day old white iPhone. I haven't calibrated the battery yet, this is the first time I let the battery run close to the end. I started charging the phone about 10 minutes after I got the 10% power warning, so, it didn't drain to the bitter end.

Here are my settings:

3G: ON
Wi-Fi: ON
Push: ON
Fetch: ON (Every 30 minutes)
Location Services: OFF
Bluetooth: OFF
Brightness: Appox. 50-60%
Serial No. starts with 87830

I haven't used it for many phone calls so far, but, I often have music playing while I'm browsing the web or checking/reading/replying to email. I'm pretty satisfied with my battery life so far.

That boggles my mind. I might be confused on what constitutes usage, anything other than standby? I mean To see someone get 12 hr of usage is insane. I wouldn't get that in like 3 days with full charges. What is the best way to get that kind of usage?

By collecting 80 usage samples from this thread and finding the averages (all from around or below 20% battery), I have concluded the following:

==========================================

Average Battery Usage Per Charge: 5 hours and 49 minutes
Average Adjusted* Battery Usage Per Charge: 5 hours 26 minutes

Apple's Estimated Battery Usage: Up to 5 hours on 3G or up to 6 hours on WiFi.

==========================================

The 80 samples were collected with the assumption that usage occurred mostly with Email/SMS/Safari usage. Samples known to include iPod or extended GPS were removed.

*The adjusted average usage removes 20 samples where one of the following conditions were met: a) high usage to standby ratio, b) usage numbers exceeding 8 hours, or c) probable battery defect.

THANK YOU I was in the middle of doing the same thing. But got sidetracked aka lazy. Plus there are numerous posts of just random battery usage anywhere from 10%-Still charging. Thanks for taking the time. I assumed it would be around 5 hours.
But like my previous post. What's the deal with someone getting 12hrs of usage or 2 days of standby? In my wildest dream my phone couldn't last that long. (That's what she said)
And it seems pointless to turn everything off. The reason I got the iPhone is to do everything it is advertised to do.
Are phones that last 6+ hours and last 2 days on standby just anomalies to the population of iPhones across the world? I mean my seems to be about average (4-5 hours usage and a little over a 24hrs in standby.
I haven't gotten 6 hours of usuage yet...I'm going to try tomorrow. Any answers or suggestions?

I intended to do both usage and standby, but only got around to doing usage. If I had to guess, the average standby from the same collection of samples was about 24-36 hours.

I'm not pointing the finger at anyone but you can easily inflate the usage timer by playing music.

Try it yourself, play music through your headphones for 6 hours straight with everything on. The battery should still display as full or nearly full.

But I said it in my previous post. I think the norm for regular use is 4-5 hours of usage and 24 hours of standby.

Can you inflate the standby?

i dont have a 3g, and i dont listen to music that much maybe 3 hours a day of ipod another 3 of pandora, work is boring

Can you inflate the standby?
In a way, yes.

Turn on airplane mode and leave your phone in standby for the night. You've just gained 12 hours or however long you sleep. The meter should not have moved at all. It barely drains the battery in standby mode with everything off.
