Average around 2.5 to 3 hours (but you should leave it plugged in for a while even after it says fully charged)

And yes, it will show a plug icon instead of a power/spark icon inside the battery on the top right corner.

It took about two hours (I looked at the clock when I plugged it in, and it was at two hours that I noticed it was done). I didn't leave it plugged in past that though. I didn't look for the plug icon, but I know it was done because I had been watching the large battery icon filling up, and it showed as full about 15min before I unplugged it. Next time, I'll check for the plug icon in the right corner. Thank you for the info! :)

Ok, latest update. 6 hours 6 minutes + 1 day, 15 hours standby! That is a record for non-iPod use!

Wifi on for the whole time, maybe a half hour all together of 3G, Edge, and GPS (MAX!). Screen dimmed down to minimum for all but one hour. Most of the 6 hours = browsing web. Maybe 15 SMS, 15 minutes of calling max.

3G off, WI FI, Edge when out, used it last night until 4:00PM today,

Surprised it is pretty good.

Theory is use 3G if you need it! Used it for NET, MAPS, GPS, (GPS always on), Blue Tooth Off, WI FI always on.

Would like advice.

On Apple dicussions, I read the article on battery and it seems like a laptop...
20%, then charge, 20%, then charge, 20%, then charge, 20%, then charge, 20%, then charge, 20%, then charge, = 100% = 1 CYCLE, and iPhone gets 400 cycles, some say, if near a plug, plug it in, others say, they wait until 20% RED warning comes on which I did last night and charged and it seemed I did get a lot of time (10 hours or so).

Advice on best battery life.

Like a laptop or not, plug in when near a plug, or drain!?!?!?!

Hey guys heres my report on using my 16GB iPhone

3G ON
Brightness at minimum
Auto brightness OFF
Localisation ON
Push ON (Mobile me and Yahoo account)
Wifi OFF
Three other mail accounts fetching every 15 minutes

7:45 AM Fully charged and left for work

30 mins call
20 mins web
20 mins email
10 mins SMS
15 mins Web Apps
4h35 Listening to podcasts
No GPS

Took the subway and the train for approx 3 hours during the day.

Phone reached 10 % at 5:45PM

Phone died at 7:00

My usage was: 6h11mins
11h08 standby

I would rate it as bad :(

Im going to try it tomorrow without push mail, i think that might be the battery killer.

Cheers

How is that bad? It's one of the highest here!!!!

Impressive battery life. I'd like to know too about best battery life, officially from Apple.

I also think charging from the wall gives better battery life than USB, but it's just a theory at the moment.

Another question - if 3G is on but not being used for anything, does it still kill the battery? (I would think yes - is this correct?)

I don't think so, as if you read Apples page about the iPhone battery life, it states that the 300 hours of standby was achieved with 3G on.

Cool. So why turn 3G off, then? My iPhone cleverly switches to WiFi when I come back home. Everywhere else wouldn't I want to have 3G?

Turning 3G off saves a lot of power, because anytime you make a call, you are using a lot more power. Apple quotes 5 hours talktime with 3G, but 10 hours on 2G. You'll also use a lot more power when browsing away from your wifi connection. They quote 6 hours browsing for 3G but don't give a time for 2G.

The extra power used when browsing over 3G vs 2G could of course be offset a little in that it takes more than twice as long to load a page over 2G......at least it does where I am as EDGE is scarce.

3G could also drain your battery quicker if you're in an area with poor 3G reception. The iPhone seems to hold onto the 3G signal as long as it can (though some are reporting this is better under 2.0.1), and when the signal is poor, the phone uses more power to keep the connection.

Apples battery page is here.

What about location svcs? Can I leave that on and not use it without fear of my battery dying?

DUDE, Thanks for the link !!! You Rock !!!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:apple::apple::apple:

No probs mate :)

I'm not sure on that. The Apple battery page doesn't specifically mention location services, but it does say that the settings not mentioned were default, and IIRC location services is turned on by default. It's probably only activated when an application is running which requires it, but as I say, I'm not sure. I personally have mine turned off, as I rarely use it.

mine has been much better on battery since 2.0.1

I don't know how to take screen shots with the iPhone or how you get those screen shots on your computer but:

WiFi: On
3G: On
Location Services: Off
Brightness: 30%
Push: On
Fetch: Manual

The best I have ever got is 2 Hours, 48 Minutes Usage with 1 Day, 9 Hours standby. I never use the GPS, and my usage is 90% phone, 8% web browsing (more WiFi than 3G), and 2% SMS text.

Is this normal or a bad battery? I have drained it fully and charged fully several times since I got it.

Today

Usage 3 hr, 8 min
Standby 8 hr, 28 min

3G off, LocServ off, Push on, brightness at 25%

Battery with about 30% left. Another crappy day.

I see a lot of those screen shots show where the iPhone is plugged in or has been plugged in since last charge. Leaves a thought that those results might be skewed or off since its charging/has been charged.

Here is mine. The last check was at 5:54 before it gave me the red battery logo and wouldn't let me in. I'm sure if I did better I might of squeaked out a full 6 hours usage.

Shopped? Notice the space between the Usage/Standby fields and the Call Time section below it. With that much space seems like the message of "iPhone has been plugged in since the last full charge".

Not saying its wrong, just that if it hasn't been plugged in at all you wouldn't have that space.

I want to say that the 2.0.1 update has significantly increased my battery life. With conservative use I'm seeing now 3 1/2 usage and 1 day 3 hours of standby. There is still 70% left on my battery.

My old 8525 couldn't last 24 hours wihout recharge, ever.

;)

I'm really getting frustrated seeing all these people getting over 24 hours of standby and I can't even get that when I don't use the phone.

heres mine using ipod, pandora, a lot of texts and phone calls

i was very proud of mine today - it was one of the first days i worked in a long time and so i took it off the dock at 8am.
right now its 3am

and the stats are

usage-3 hours, 55 mins
standby- 17 hours 13 mins

and i haven't gotten to 20% yet. but im close, i'd say im at about 35%

Here are mine......

Generally here's how I use my services....

Location services - turned off when I'm not using them
3G - On all the time
Wi-fi - I switch this on when I get home and leave it on all night
Push - On for mail, contacts, calendars, with a 1 hour fetch interval as back up

During this charge I used GPS for roughly 25 minutes to guide me to a golf course (works brilliantly!), used Twinkle a fair bit and used NetNewsWire a quite a lot at home through wi-fi.

Just been reading through the manual, and it has this to say:

Turn Location Services on or off: Choose General > Location Services and turn
location services on or off.

Note: To conserve battery life, turn Locations Services off when you’re not using it.
