So I got up this morning and I had charged my phone last night and it was unplugged before I went to bed. I got up this morning and looked at the usage. Both Usage and Standby were both identical at 10 hours and 18 minutes. I was asleep!!

Could it be an app that is keeping an open connection? The battery was half gone when I got up this morning. This doesn't usually happen to be honest. I have unplugged it at night before and I wake up and the battery is still basically full.

Anyone else having the same experience?

I am. I mentioned it above and started this thread about it, but have yet to get any conclusive reply.

yes, this is the mail hang issue. See this thread:

My apologies for not looking that far back into it.

I wonder why I didn't have this problem before and now I am having this problem. Apple really needs to figure out what is going on handle this properly, regardless if it is hardware or software. End of the day, their reputation is what is going to hurt if it isn't dealt with in a good manner. Which will in turn hurt their financial performance in the markets.

Mail does seem to be buggy. Using the mail2web service, sometimes it is great!! sometimes it is not, that is when I chocked it up to mail2web being down or whatever. Maybe this is not truly the case.

Battery experiment take 2

This is my second experiment.
3G On
PUSH Mobileme ON (contacts, bookmarks, calendar mail)
Optonline mail fetch 1 hour
Bluetooth ON
wifi off (until last minute to drain battery for charging)

It looks like the location services must be closely monitored. Each time I used an app with GPS i shut off the location services when done. This saved a great deal of power and gave me standby time than my previous days experiment with push off and fetch on.

With these latest results I saw more battery time with Push Mobileme ON, 3G on, Bluetooth ON.

What were you doing on the iPhone during that time?

using it. duh! a little of this and that, here and there.

if i wanted just a phone i'd get a Jitterbug.

-3g on-during the day it switches with 3g and Edge. unstable signals at work.
-wifi off
-location off
-push off
-all email manual fetch
-brightness at 50% no auto

Very interesting results Steve! But since your results are counter-intuitive (you should get less battery life with both push and fetch enabled than with just fetch) you might want to run your control again.

Here is my screen shot. I don't have 3G in my area so it is always off. I only turn location services on when I am using an app that may use it. I have mobile me push mail and contacts.

During this time I used the phone very little, a few phone calls and most of the rest just checking emails, looking at pictures and other short looks at apps.

Has anyone had this problem?

Yesterday afternoon while playing with my phone I realized my battery was still full. It was nearing 24 hours with like 3 hrs of usage. Usually the battery is less than half at this point. It got a normal overnight charge. So after a couple more hours of usage the battery was still full. Then it died with no 20% or 10% warning. I think the battery indicator was frozen. Has this happened to anyone else?

Man that's way more than I get. I can't even get that much in airplane mode. What did you do for 7 hours of usage?

Answering and making a few phone calls, I don't get a lot on this new number yet. Most still go to my work phone number. Checking received email and responding, forwarding, or deleting them. Account gets around 30 emails a day. Showing pictures to people a few times, and checking a couple of other apps that are installed, don't remember exactly which.

I wasn't using it very long each time I took it out of standby.

With moderate usage.
Music, quick browsing, mail, lots of texting, and a decent amount of short phone calls.

I had the same problem and I knew something was wrong so I turned it off and back on and the batt indicator started working. Another minor issue that needs to be fixed.

I got my iPhone swapped out due to a defective battery. I could only get about 3 hours of 3G surfing on the old one before it was completely dead.

The new one is much better. I have 3G on all the time (good 3G coverage in my area) and i get about 5 hours of usage on 3G/Apps/email/Phone/Text before I need recharge it.

The first image is my old iPhone with the defective battery either right before or after the 10% warning. The second is the replacement iPhone (which was a brand new one, not refurbished :)). As you can see, the replacement has more usage and more battery life.

Still not convinced this battery is much better than my last phone. This includes 30 minutes via iPod and the rest was talk via 3G. Hit the 20% mark soon after this.

3G: On
PUSH: On, FETCH set to manual
LocServ: Off
Bluetooth:OFF
Screen: 40% w/Auto brightness on
Usage: 30 minutes of iPod, 1.25 hours of talk or so.

OK. Here's my usage...

iphone_battery_usage.jpg

At 4% battery charge I managed to clock 4 hours and 14 minutes of:

* 3G Internet use (90% of the time), which includes browsing, VNC and mail
* Playing games (5%); some of them use 3D graphics
* Phone calls (5%)

Settings:

* 3G always on (mostly full bars but it did switch to EDGE on a number of occasions)
* Brightness at around 30-35%
* Wi-Fi, PUSH, Location Services are OFF
* SSH and Alarm Clock ON

Don't mind the "Call Time" section, since Current Period seem to always equal Lifetime, and not the amount of time used after the phone has been fully charged.

So... dismal battery life or OK?

Heres mine:

This is with using AIM constantly, texting, and probably about 1-1.5hr of voice. I have a feeling like the battery meter isnt entirely accurate all the time because it fluctuates drastically for no reason sometimes... regardless though, I'm pretty happy with the battery life on my 3g.

This is with 3G and wifi on.

Yep, no surprise there. Wifi surfing will easily get you 10 hours of usage.

From my experience average usage is between 5 and 6 hours on wifi. Where you're getting 10 is beyond me. Apple's own battery life estimates state up to 6 hours.

I might also add that none of that usage was listening to music. I rarely listen to music on my iphone.

I got 9 hours of usage today on wifi. I didn't make any calls, and brightness was at 30%. 3G was on, but not being utilized.
