I think pod2g is selfish and overly-protective of his intellectual property - not a true "team player".
What the heck are you talking about.

Pod2g created the poll asking us as in THE COMMUNITY, what he should do with these exploits. How the heck is that being selfish? That is the direct opposite of the word selfish. lol

I say do it now.

Apple devs are pretty smart (most of the time) and know what they are doing. The chances that Apple has already patched this exploit in iOS6 I bet are very good.

But lets say you wait till the iOS6 beta comes out and see that the exploits are still there? Then IMO from a dev stand point you are playing right into Apples hands. It's in the beta stages. Apple devs are working harder than ever at that time to get all those things patched up. It would be patched up within a couple more beta releases. I don't think you gain anything waiting for iOS6. No matter what you do I believe the chances that Apple will had already patch the exploits are pretty good.

I see it differently. He is asking the community to justify his cards close to the chest viewpoint. Today's exploit will be useless in iOS 6 or on the new hardware that runs it almost guaranteed. Look how much changed from 4 to 5, really stumped dev hackers and they had to practically start over.

If I got you guys to vote on whether or not I should turn myself in for cheating the IRS, is my final decision justified by your vote and simply because of the final tally? More will be revealed...

I don't see your logic. Pod2g hasn't explicitly stated his own position on the matter. And he hasn't announced a decision. As long as he does what the community votes for, how is that being selfish? Unlike reporting yourself to the IRS, the jailbreak doesn't effect his livelihood one way or another.

I0n1c on the other hand is a selfish prick.

Heh, what if he already has a working jailbreak for 5.1 and now that the poll is closed plans to release it later today. Blowing everyones minds.

If it were me putting in the hard yards to get the exploits ready I would hang around till iOS 6 but joe public, impatient and impetus as ever, wants jailbreak yesterday.

So we get our 5.1 JB tomorrow and for 6 months we happy. iOS 6 launches in October and we back to square one moaning and bitching and begging for a JB.

So we can either sweat it out now and play nicely in October or play nicely now and sweat it out in October.

The other alternative is the dev team start charging for the JB, $2-$5 a hit, with the guarantee that they become semi professional, full-time dedicated developers/hackers and we get these exploits as soon as they ready, perhaps within weeks of the firmware launches. This is the option I would opt for. I have no problem paying for a Jailbreak!!

ditto. I'd pay an extra $50 for a stable jailbreak any day.. And I do not know pod2g from Adam.. do not mean to pass judgement on his reasoning - he is legit and the reason I love my iOS 5.0.1 today, so take me with a grain of salt concerning his motives I know nothing. But the jb for iOS 6 will be a bitch whether they release 5.1 jb now or not. imo

I agree with the general consensus that holding off on the 5.1 jailbreak will more than likely not be of any benefit. Apple will more than likely be using different hardware and will be implementing new security, and will have probably patched any exploits that are present in 5.1. Why waste all that work just to wait and see what happens when ios6 comes out?

If you were an enthusiast, you knew better than to wait until now for a jailbreak ready phone. You had from October until March, and one could argue even later as their stock probably still had 5.0.1 or lower for some time. You can't have everything the way you want it when you want it.

Warranty/messing up your jailbreak is a potential point, but that constitutes a very small percentage of users, and unfortunately the exploits must be used for the greater good. It stinks, however I actually had my phone replaced under warranty because I was picky about the sticking volume button and it had 5.0.1. That was a week ago.
Yes enthusiasts and anyone else interested in jailbreaking stopped buying new iPhones the day Apple stopped signing 5.0.1.

I must have forgotten that fact.

** hot press **

@pod2g just tweeted - Heya! My iPhone 4 running on ios5.1 is now untethered :)

Nice one - sod your iPhone 4s :p

It means he's found a tether free JB solution for the A4 series phones. The question is, will it lead to a JB on the A5?

It'd be great if he could release the A4 JB now for iPhone 4 users.

But of course, it's all up to him. :)

If there were a guarantee that the vulnerability would still be present by the time ios6 comes around, sure, it'd be worth hanging onto. But there is no such guarantee - last time they saved 5 vulnerabilities for ios5, and they were all closed by release.

why wait for for iOS6 if its not even in BETA? iOS 5.1 is needed for a lot of iPhone 4/4S and iPad 2/New iPad's. If iOS6.0 was in BETA i would say yeah lets wait but who knows when it will be released.

Lets say iOS6.0 comes out with the iPhone 5 or The New iPhone and has a diff. processor or not even close to the New iPad? Come on lets have fun with our devices now :)

The vulnerabilities will be patched by iOS 6, more than likely. I don't have an issue with a JB being released now for 5.1, I have an issue with the length of time it may take for us to see an exploit for iOS 6.

Now, if the dev team were working on this full-time IE paid professionals chances are they could have exploits to market far sooner than is currently the case, where devs are working the exploits in their free time.

So what I'm saying, charge for the exploits, make a living out of producing the jailbreaks, become full-time professionals. It's a win win for everyone involved.

Yes, because if you REALLY wanted a jailbroken 4S, you had about half a year to get your hands on one.

There is already a jailbreak for the A4 or lower thanks to limerain. If it's untethered it means he has compiled an untethered exploit.

This is separate from the A5 jailbreak.

There's more to it than that. A lot of the devs (particularly the iPhone dev-team members) refuse to take money for the JBs. I think it's sort of like a hobby to them - they enjoy working on it, but it would get old quick if that was their job, they were held to certain standards, etc...

This whole thread is amusing. People here assume that Apple releases a product then stops touching it. Everyone cites the dev teams saying they've found "exploits" and can use them to jailbreak, and the same users turn a blind eye to the fact that there's a huge legitimate developer community out there designing apps who stumble across these "vulnerabilities" as they call them and report them to Apple. All this assumes, of course, that Apple's internal iOS security team who is also quite good and getting paid to discover "vulnerabilities" in the OS doesn't find them first.

While we all see patches get pushed right after an "exploit" is used to jailbreak, in most cases Apple already knows about it. Why would they patch one of likely dozens of vulnerabilities and create 5.0.1, 5.0.2, 5.0.8, 5.0.12 when that also comes with deployment, support, and logistical cost? If you think the 20 or so people on the dev teams are smarter than those at Apple, you really need to spend a day or two in Cupertino and see how things work.

There will always be exploits and always be those trying to find them, but the bottom line is Apple always knows about them before the dev team does, it's just the cat\mouse game of knowing if they've been discovered, and responding to it in order to stem negative PR it might bring them having a "vulnerable" operating system.

I'm not trying to downplay the work of the dev team, but the "save the exploit" doesn't hold up very well, as odds are Apple knows about the exploits and have already planned on patching them. It's not a get out of jail card without an expiration.

Sorry, just thought I'd tangent since there always is so much misinformation and uneducated responses in these types of threads.
