The jailbreak worked fine on my iPod Touch 4th Gen, except whenever it would respring all of the apps would disappear and the ONLY way I could get them back was by rebooting which is a major pain in the butt, so I just restored and will wait for a fix

how to update from 4.0.1
I have a jailbroken and unlocked 3GS still on 4.0.1 with 05.13.04 baseband. How can I update to 5.0.1? If I update in iTunes, with it also update my firmware. If not, do I use a custom update and how? Thanks!

Is you already have a Tethered 5.0.1 Jailbreak:
Do yourself a favor, skip Redsnow altogether and just install the Corona app in Cydia. It takes 30 seconds, changes nothing on your phone, and you'll be untethered. I was about to go through the whole process and possibly do a complete restore, then I saw the Corona option.

So before seeing the news about installing Corona Untethered JB from cydia, I did it the old fashioned way and did a full restore and used RedSnow to do the untethered, everything went fine and even some of my iBlank icons remained (I restored from an iTunes backup for pictures and messages).
But when I go into cydia to install some things, there are no items to install! Even on the packages and sources already showing, when I go to them, it says cannot locate package. Is this because the servers are taking a beating right now? Or did I just mess something up along the way? :|

yeah I think a lot of us are having the same problem...
nothing can be located. I am hoping it's because the servers are busy. I was able to get bytafont..but my main reason for the jailbreak is for SbSettings, infinidock or even the 5 dock and changing up the theme....so far nothing.....
Is anyone else getting an error 1600 when attempting to restore with the Redsn0w custom IPSW?
I understand that error means that I'm not in pwned DFU mode, but Redsn0w says I am in that mode. I've also used the PwnageTool method to enter owned DFU mode and I'm still getting the error.
Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

try rebooting or another computer both have worked for me.. I gor everything but the last couple bits of Corona jacked my phone up so I had to start from scratch. My fault I knew I should have waited a few.. I'm waiting till 1-2am tonight maybe tomorrow. now that it's here I can wait a day or two.
Thanks for the quick help. I just got it working. Turns out you have to quit Redsn0w before opening iTunes to restore the IPSW.
I'm frustrated that I don't have iBooks anymore. All my books are on my iPad, but I can't read them
I had the same problem... While you're in cydia, if the status bar at the top is stuck on something like 'Done: Release.gpg', hit cancel, go to the 'Changes' tab, and tap the Refresh button at the top. You might need to repeat this a couple times til it actually downloads the packages/sources.
You mean jailbreaking pirates, I hope? Because jailbreaking ≠ piracy, just like installing a DVD burner ≠ piracy. (Not saying that a lot of jailbreakers aren't also pirates, which I think is sadly probably true.)

Twice I tried and same result in my phone freezing in dfu mode.
Finally was able to restor back to factory setting then rebuild, waste of hour and a half.

I'm about to jailbreak but have a couple questions. I want to preserve my baseband.. When I open redsnow do I select "everything else" and use to "create custom ipsw?" if so what do I do next? Where do I tell it to use the NO BB ipsw?
I think that I figured it out, but when I selected the no bb ipsw file that it created from the restore file that I downloaded it said that it wasn't supported with this version of redsnow..
Any ideas.
