Yes maybe..however...I doubt that Apple will place touch id on the back of the iPhone simply because it would only be a temporary solution until they get the yield rates higher for placing touch id underneath the front screen. I can not see them doing this huge u-turn.
It is so un heard of that they are u turning on the Mac pro .
So I fail to see it on the iPhone.
This simply could be a way to see who is leaking information. Give someone you suspect of not being able to keep sensitive info under wraps and make sure that they are the only person who knows.
Then make sure that information is something that is so unlikely to happen..so unique that if you see it appear in the press etc you know it could only have come from that person.

Farfetched and in denial.
Just like all the previous times rumors where placed for the next iphine( which all seemed to be true after release)

Touch ID on the back? Say good bye to easily unlocking while on a flat surface, like my desk. Have unlock to preview for messages on? Tough luck.

Dumb move if comes to fruition.

Did you read the article? Photo from an Apple partner of a potential candidate so yes, it's a "potential design"

Last one of these I saw was for the iPhone 5 and it was spot on to the final product so has a good chance of being the final product.
All the people saying this isn't going to happen are like the 2014 people who said there would be no bigger phone.

yeah i remember that guy his account was 1080p
It's not a "render by random people"

Not all rumors came true

Until this comes from a good source it's not to be taken seriously

Not likely Touch ID will be on the back due to the majority of people who put cases on their iPhones.

Wow, you guys are very hypocritical. The S8 does not have the design of the S7 edge; totally different design and implementation. The S8 is highly believed to be the best phone design ever. Its sad that someone like yourself has bad things to say about a totally new design that you have no experience with at all.

Newsflash, the S8 is on display all over the place, it's not like it's some unreleased Apple device, and it's also not like you have to own one for an extended period of time to really get how it feels in your hand.

The OLED screen is gorgeous, I'll give you that. But the case is so, so ugly. It's really standard Samsung fare, even if with slightly better materials than some earlier iterations. Even the dated iPhones and many other Android handsets (the Google Pixel, Sony devices, heck, even the 5C and some outdated Microsoft WP devices made out of plastic) look better designed by comparison, because they are either made of metal (and feel like it), or unapologetically made of plastic. I still don't get why some brands still insist on using ugly-ass reflective or metal-coated plastics; who do they think they are fooling?

This, on the other hand, is still a thing to behold (and to hold!) to this day, scratches and all:

I'd rather have a phone made out of this and in this state (or my iPhone 5S with tiny holes on its back because some dust got trapped between the case and the cover, something which I don't really mind that much), than Samsung's metal coated/reflective plastics and actual but varnish-coated metal any time of the week. Even Apple's worst anodised aluminium finishings are better than the S8 and its ilk, since they at least feel like the real thing (because they are, and aren't coated with weird stuff). Even the weird jet-black iPhone 7 and the black stainless steel Apple Watch look and feel better than that thing. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it just *feels* wrong.

Judging by all the previous leaks of earlier iphone models, and the reaction tha users on this forums had about the design, i think the new iphone will be a hit, both in sales and design

Wouldn't mind having touch id on the back at the top. When you pick up the phone (4.7"), your index finger is already in the area. Pressing the current location is actually a slightly worse hassle, since you have to grab the bottom and bend the thumb to touch it.

Then this phone better be really strong since we wont be able to put it in a case anymore. How could they put the ID on the back? I've been an avid (if not rabid) Apple user for a long time. The direction this company has taken is enough to make Jobs roll in his grave. Hardly updating their hardware and focusing on cheap revenue generation (music) is the way of a failing company. Get your focus back!

If you were going to place the Touch ID on the back, why not integrate it into the Apple Logo?

I really hope this rendering is incorrect, but I thought the same thing when the CAD renderings of iPhone 6 showed up around this time of year and those were spot on.

I think this metal ring around the home button is needed (as some kind of proximity sensor), and I don't think that would look good.

But then again… certainly better than a home button at the back. yack.

This looks like something Tim Cook would approve. The iPhone 5 was the last iPhone design Steve was personally involved in. Even today it is the gold standard in smartphone design.

This is my favorite design too. In order to decrease thickness and weight, Apple had to switch to the new design, which I dislike. I hope the iPhone 8 uses this design, which will allow them to add a battery with a much larger capacity.

Really the only downside I see is Touch ID on the back. They're rumored to be testing different designs. Remember the negative reactions when the iPhone 4 started leaking.

The metal ring is there for conductivity (so that the sensor isn't always on and draining the battery, so you're half right), but I suppose the case itself might perform the same function. Except it would only work if you used a cover that shielded your hand or if the case had some sort of further separation around the apple logo (and that would definitely be needed if the case was made out of glass), thus losing its clean looks on the back.

On the other hand, if TouchID was indeed integrated into the back of the screen or the screen itself, the “ring” could simply be virtual and encoded into software. But, then again, a glass back like the one on the 4/4S series and the one widely rumoured for the iPhone 8 could also have some kind of basic and cheap touch sensor glued behind it, à lá iPod touchwheel/Mighty Mouse/Magic Mouse (…/iPhone touchscreen?), so… they would have a lot of options to choose from.

Wow, A concept photo and forum members are completely upset that this could be a possibility? It's completely superficial and fictitious with no evidence supporting anything that the iPhone 8 will look like this.

What the hell is that? Is this really what Jony Ives envisioned?

I hope this is a fake or at least not what they decided to go for. When Samsung announced the fingerprint sensor on the back I threw up a little in my mouth and I'm ready to do the same if they actually decide to go with this model.

This is such disappointing news. Fingers crossed this is a no go.
