Duron: 512mb
iBook: 640mb

Isn't it Apple who always say that "Mac OS X delivers Java 2 on every system. Apple has optimized Java on Mac OS X to look great and perform superbly, making Mac OS X the ultimate platform for developing and deploying cross-platform Java applications" ... BS ?

Hmm, I still think there has to be something up wth the GUI rendering in Java on OS X, because even my slow-ass Celeron 433 laptop runs just fine on that java app... If I take off JIT compile on the MS VM, there is a noticeable slowdown...

Again, I'm thinking its the Java implementation, not the CPU...

I cant see too many Apple fans buying a new powerbook with a G4 in it.

Only a G5 will persuade me to buy a new powerbook.
Sure, but there are plent of us Apple fans that still only have powermacs and iBooks. I am going to get a powerbook as soon as new models come out.

Yeah I'd say it's BS! For some reason, there are a few things which PCs run circles around Macs at. Acrobat PDF viewing is one. Gawd-awful slow on Macs.

Preview is the fastest PDF viewer in the world. The PC's are the ones that are terribly slow at displaying PDF's

see, that's the kind of comment that I just don't understand. Is the iBook G4 an exception ? As I said I was comparing my iBook G4-800 640mb to a duron 1600mhz 640mb and basically for all PDFs the duron is moren than twice as fast (I'd say). The duron easily takes on 20mb+ pdfs with lots of images while the iBook takes its time (especially when zooming in and then moving).

As far as graphics, well most PCs that compete with Apple's eMac and iMac use shared memory for video. So an NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra is a hell of a lot better than an HP, or a Dell with 16 or 32 MB of shared video ram.

That's really not the point I was making. PCs that compete with the imac cost $400, so it is understandable that they have cheap or shared memory graphics cards. The point that I am making is that Apple is being extremely thrifty when it comes to it graphics cards in the iMac. All the components in the iMac are pretty high quality except the graphics cards. I wish they would invest $20-$30 more on a decent graphics card so that owners will be able to play most games well for about 2 years. And don't say people that buy iMacs don't want to play games.

iMacs are all about quality and ease of use and it isn't exactly easy for a novice to have to lower all the settings on a game so that the framerate is acceptable.

Exactly my point! So why are people whining about Apple not putting high end graphic cards in their CONSUMER end models! Most people don't care about what kind of graphics card is in it. A Celeron is an ok processor, but its not a great processor either, but it suits most low end consumers needs just fine.

I am not asking for high-end but I am not asking for cheap either!

No powerbooks @ NAB

Powerbooks not announced on NAB, as expected.

Wasn't one rumor that it would be Monday and then to the public on Tuesday? If so, 1 day to go...

EDIT

It was ThinkSecret that said Monday. Ok...until then.

So are they release the new PB quietly on the website tomorrow, or what?
i´m a little stressed because i have an appointment to buy a second hand 15" 1.25 ghz powerbook the day after tomorrow. I don´t to buy a ´older´ model PB (or just pay to much for it).

We don't know, no one knows.. we could be sitting here tomorrow waiting with nothing happening.. sitting waiting till June/july with nothing happening..

Welcome to Nothing Happening.. Say hello to Apple.

No way man, pssh, what do you expect them to announce at the National Association of BROADCASTERS Show? Well of course stuff that benefits Professional and Industry users mostly. The only thing it "cements" is that Apple is still the leader in the creative sector.

Well I guess they won't be officially announced until Tuesday morning EDT, but we might get info on the new models by tomorrow.

BTW, aswitcher, you must be an early riser, if my calculations are correct it's only 5.25 am in lovely Sydney, on a Monday morning no less...

Just lob a slow meatball over the plate and folks start swingin' like crazy..

Just keepin' the thread alive.. if if wasn't for the low, soft ones, there'd be 3 posts to any given story..

Relish your victory.
