well it has been said that the high end model will top $3000 but since the top model now is $2999 it may only be a small increase.

Indeed. Like I said, it all depends on how much Apple decides to really pimp out that top end model. If it ends up being just single dual-cores across the line, expect a price drop. If it's dual dual cores though, I don't see that $2999 getting any lower, especially if Apple follows suit as they did with the iMac and also includes DDR2 RAM, PCIe video cards and (possibly) larger HDs - which they pretty much have to, as I doubt they could get away with having all these features in a "consumer" machine and not the "pro" machine.

ACT I: The NEW PowerBook
ACT II: The NEW PowerMac
ACT III: That photoprogram you guys kept talkn about, + 10.4.3

I hope you are right, and the updates are well worth a big media event.

Ironically, even though I will buy the rumored HD PowerBook the moment it is announced, I am most excited about your idea of 10.4.3. Tiger is a buggy pile of crap, and I hope it is the fix we have all been waiting for.

And this is one of the reasons I've been content to stay with Panther ever since Tiger was released...

HP/IBM charge about $500 extra per dual-core

Note that Opteron systems from IBM and HP add about $500 (depending on frequency) per chip to upgrade from single core to dual core.

I'd be surprised if IBM doesn't charge a similar uplift for dual-core - especially at the beginning.

I'll predict more or less the current three speeds (dual single-core, or single dual-core - maybe with PCIe/DDR2), plus a 4th that's dual-dual 2.5 at $1000 more than the dual 2.7 GHz.... (Or maybe Apple will loosen up the "3 sizes fit all" mindset and allow the choice of dual single-core, or dual dual-core for $800-$1000 more across the range.)

All dual-core at the same price is dreaming, IMO.

Just guessing, of course!

I use my machine pretty intensively, and I have less issues than I did with Panther. I've found Tiger to be great, from day one.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see what changes I notice with this update.

Oh yeah, dual quad PM will be more a lot more than dual 2.7 PM, no doubt about that.
You wanna play, you gotto pay... ;)

That's good to hear, I have heard many people who have had problems - but obviously everyone's user experience is different. For me, I still don't have a good reason to switch to Tiger...

Not even Widgets???

Nah, I think Konfabulator jaded me on the whole widgets thing when I realized how much of a resource hog some of them turned out to be. I'm sure Dashboard is better, but it seems like extra clutter running on my system that I don't really need eating up my RAM. I'm sure it's one of those things though where if I used them, I'd find them useful, but right now I'm not really in a position where I wish I had Dashboard. To each his own though of course!

spanner in the works

How about new Apple cinema displays? Cheaper price, built in iSight + something else maybe HD 20" ??

Hope its PB HD w/ built-in iSight, w/ airport streaming to the new displays?...Dreaming

about PMs can't buy them in toronto right now

(sorry i posted this in another thread too but i think it belongs here)

i need to buy a dual 2.3 g5 for school and so last tuesday i called to find out about one. However they told me they were out of stock, so okay cool she tells me to call back just before the day they come. (no idea there was going to be an upgrade) call the apple store again this time friday, told me they are out of stock still and the earliest they will have some is wednesday.. and they can't put something on hold for me or take my credit card number to secure one for me because they said they have nothing to scan..

alrighty.

so i call another place on my actual school campus. they tell me they do sell 2.3 dual PMs but he has none and he can't find any anywhere. however this sales man actually likes his customers and tells me there is a reason because there is going to be an innovation and to check back on wednesday. so he told me to relax and hold on.

so this is my question, are they changing all the powermacs? because wouldn't you still be able to get all the older ones.

although the innovation is cool i seriously need to buy the computer my homework is suffering as we speak and i hate staying late at school to work on their g5's.

Since the event is only 3 days away, I would seriously recommend waiting, unless you need a PowerMac this very instant in time. ;)

My prediction is yes, they will be changing all the PowerMacs. All the PowerMacs will receive 970MPs, and the only question will be if the high end PowerMac (or others) will have a single or dual setup. Look for DDR2 memory, PCIe video cards, and who knows what else.

As for the old PowerMacs, like the one you're looking at, you could then pick it up for a great deal - many places (Apple themselves included) usually offer "old" machines at discounted prices, so if you either want to save money, or feel that a 2.3 system is more than enough to meet your needs, this would definitely be an option to explore, as those machines will definitely be out there.

But as it is only a few days away, why not wait and see what happens? Who knows, perhaps Apple will introduce a lot of major updates to the PowerMac line, and keep the price the same or even drop it by a couple hundred dollars!

Hope this helps....

well wednesday is the day.. i wish it was just a couple weeks earlier because i really need the machine.

Chill is probably the operative word regarding your current software working.

Well, I hope things work out for you then - only 3 more days! As for your software, I doubt you'll have any issues. I know it's hard to wait, especially when you need a machine yesterday, but at least we know they are getting updated Wednesday, which is better than not knowing at all when the next update might happen.

There you go, that's the way to look at it... what good is a new machine if you can't show it off and make others envious of you? ;)
