I'm always surprised when Apple announces new PowerBooks just after the main back-to-school buying season. They did this in 2001, 2002, and again in 2003 if I remember correctly, always during the fall semester, never before it. Yes, these announcements are in time for the "holiday buying season", but PowerBooks are especially well-suited to students, and it seems like wasted opportunity that Apple hasn't adjusted its release cycle accordingly.

Edit: See related thread.

That's why they came out with the iBook line before school started. Let's face it college students buy iBooks more than they do PBs. More affordable, and more college oriented since it comes with all the extra software

Remember the MiniMac update?

Do you remember the last Minimac update? How!!! (I know is a entry level machine, but...)

For sure the 30hz speed bump is true. It will be once again "Good old Apple" making a few tricks, thank you Steve, thank you for making a few bucks with a very aparentely lousy update, you're on the good track.

Well, this just screams $2000+ machine, doesn't it? But wait! It's got an Apple logo? I'll take 100 of them! And as much Kool-aid as I can drink!

"At the high-end, the new PowerBooks are expected to gain a mere 30MHz speed boost that would put the 15-inch and 17-inch models at 1.7GHz."

30MHz?! That really sucks. I mean, I wouldn't even buy a PowerBook now. I would definetly go buy the new iBook. Plus I've read that the iBook is more durable anyway. Can't freakin wait to get the new Intel PowerBooks! :)

Generally I'm all for updates, even small speedbumps...but this is ridiculous...

Why bother with an update at all? Well, marketing reasons for sure, but how many people are waiting around for that extra 30mhz before they jump on the PowerBook?

The PowerBook line has stagnated this long, what's wrong with waiting a few more months for the Intel chips?

Oh well... I guess any update is better than none, maybe.

Well a "few more months" is likely more closer to about a year from now, easily 9+ months from now. Does that answer your question?

Yeah ... 30MHz isn't great. There's no way anyone would pay a few hundred dollar premium for such a small increase in speed but if it included a HD screen, maybe.

Hence why Apple is making the switch to Intel.....

+ a possible FSB speed boost
+ a possible increase in cache
+ a possible increase in memory bandwidth (DDR2)
etc.

If those happen, the gains would easily exceed what a 30MHz clock speed bump implies. Heck we don't even know what the CPU core is... X Ghz in one core could be radically different then Y GHz with a different core.

Buy the product that perform, look, act, etc. in the way you like... and grow up while you are at it.

I only want a new PowerBook, I don't need a new computer right now, so I suppose the wait will be ok. I've discussed my thoughts about the update before, but I will post them again. I think that we will see:

1) Minor Speed Bump (if that means using the Freescale chip thats pin-compatible, even better)
2) Upgraded DL Superdrive
3) DDR2 Possibly - I only see them including it to increase battery life (- taking others opinions here)
4) Possibly a larger HD

I do not think that we will ever see a G5. It may be completed and were Apple to stay with IBM, we would have gotten it soon. Setting up the fabrication plants (for mass production of the PowerBook) costs money - usually lots. I dont see Apple or the manufacturers doing that for just a single revision. Apple also has a history of 1gen problems; they most likely will move to Intel before the problems can be resolved.

Bring on the updates! :)

I love my current 12"PB, awesome little computer that has been computing quite well for me. Unless they made some changes that were MUST HAVE type things (which from the list, there are none) I wouldn't think of getting a new one at all. The current ones are awesome/stable machines, I love mine and am quite content.

The only other changes I would love would be to 12" specifically, like adding a pcmcia slot, better battery, and....2Gb ram support, come on!

I usually buy 2 Macs a year, just purchased a new iMac when they were updated, and I max them out in every way possible that doesn't (overtly) void the warranty.. Lately there haven't been any compelling reasons to update the 12" 1.33Ghz PB that I bought when they were updated. The specs on the machines just don't lend themselves to speed anymore, but we all know that, though we may want to delude ourselves otherwise.

I'll be outside the store day one the new intel machines are released, buggy toasters be damned, because I'm losing ground here and i don't like it one bit.

I guess irony is dead.
If you used it correctly... hint it requires proper context to form the conditions for it being ironic... otherwise it comes off as a simple troll.

Somehow I doubt a Geforce Go 6800 Ultra solution. The Dell XPS laptop isn't exactly small and compact. I'm sure battery life isn't the first priority of a gaming laptop, either.
xps-closed.jpg

Whered you get the 6800 form? There was an earlier post thats poked fun the the 68030 chip(long...long...ago, when 16MHZ was the standard clock speed)...

but ya, 6800 would be pretty nice, but I dont see Apple shipping that type of high-end card anytime soon...let alone an nVidia card...

I wouldn't mind it so much if they upgraded the video card to 128MB RAM and a higher res, brighter LCD.

Apple should put a widescreen display in the PB. I think that would attract a lot more sales than a speed bump, however large...or small.

This rumor is too weak on facts to be of much use other than restarting the usual arguments...

Apple is fracking insane...

Sure, I know in marketing 101 customer perception is everything, ie: you can polish a turd and sell it for heaps.. but 30mhz increase?

Hell, a graphing calculator has more power than that!

It would look very bad if Apple indeed announced this "upgrade" and it ended up being only 30 MHz. Why bother? I hope for Apple's sake they don't do this.

Last chance to get a piece of history if they are released.

When it comes to computers, I don't think most people want to pay full price for a cutting edge machine that will double as a piece of history :p
