Sure, I know in marketing 101 customer perception is everything, ie: you can polish a turd and sell it for heaps.. but 30mhz increase?

Hell, a graphing calculator has more power than that!

Perception is everything...indeed...I'm sure a 1920x1200 resolution would make people forget about the mere 30MHz though :D

Powerbook HD anyone?

It seems to me Apple has been selling their cpu's at frequencies of the main bus. 167 * 10 = 1.67ghz.

So, with a 200mzh bus for the 7448 the PROBABLE speeds are: 1.6, 1.8 or hopefully a last best speed of 2.0. 200mhz * 10 = 2.ghz. Which would be nice. So, with the current chip running at 1.67, then the next chip will surely run at 1.8ghz at a minimum. If the chip is capable of running at 2ghz then Apple would probably release a version at that speed.

Since intel is predicting a 2.1ghz speed for the dual core laptop chip in the first quater of 2006 then there should be no marketing problem.

And as I've said before Apple should be selling us the "BESTEST" chips they can get, even if it could possibly canabalize future sales. ( Would that we all had that problem. )

Seems interesting to me that Freescale is saying the chip can go to 1.7ghz with a system bus of 200mhz. Because that makes no sense. Because you either multiply by 8( 200 * 8 = 1.6ghz ) or you multiply by 9( 200 * 9 = 1.8ghz )

Intel will have 1.67GHz / 1.84GHz / 2GHz / 2.13GHz Dual-Core Yonah processors by 2006.

Thanks for the info, so really there should be no problem there.
A dual core 1.84 Yonah has got to be better then a 1.8 single core from Freescale.

Just a question of do we want to run Rosetta on version 1 Yohan.

There's no way anyone would pay a few hundred dollar premium for such a small increase in speed but if it included a HD screen, maybe.

Both the 15" and 17" already have HD resolution. 1280x854 and 1400x900 are more than HD, actually, because true HD's minimum resolution requirement is 1280x720. One of my friends just bought a 42" Panasonic plasma HDTV (not EDTV) that has a native resolution of 1024x1024.

720p is great. Don't let the numbers fool you. 1080i is 60 fields (half frames) of 1920x540, whereas 720p is 60 full frames of 1280x720. Of course 1080p would be even better, but no cable/satellite/over-the-air channel is broadcasting in that format. However, I think HBO is sending out 1080i streams with 3:2 pulldown for 24p.

But as far as marketing goes, yeah they'll call it PowerBook HD even though the current 15" and 17" are already HD.

It's a (rumored) 30MHz *increase* to 1.7GHz.

Is this graphing calculator more powerful than a 1.7GHz G4? Doubt it.

this quote made me laugh...

"The new Dell design is not only sleek with its special LEDs, but much lighter as well. Weighing in at 8.7 lb (about 3.9 kg) the XPS Gen2 is about 28% lighter than the whopping 12 lb (5.5 kg) Clevo based systems, such as those offered by Sager, CyberPower, and Hypersonic. Even the charger is 18% lighter, at just over 2 lb (0.93 kg). "

Well, you may not like the hardware, and you obviously detest the OS, but nevertheless those are impressively specced laptops.

What about half clock ratios ?

When it comes to computers, I don't think most people want to pay full price for a cutting edge machine that will double as a piece of history :p

But back in '83 my brother bought an Apple //e and I still have it!!! And I could probably sell the thing now as a collector's item for - oh, wait... :( ;)

200mhz x 8.5 = 1.7 ghz

Most recently, Apple had a PowerBook with a 167 mhz bus that went up to 1.25 ghz (7.5 multiplier).

o my god
i was long waiting for more pixel.....

I have just purchased an iBook.......and will be shipped today....cannot cancel...... :( :( :(

This next update is rediculous. I would just wait for the Intel stuff to come out in the Powerbook. It will be much better anyway.

I agree ... If Apple can only squeeze out a 30 MHz gain in processor speed, they might as well not even release a new Powerbook in September.

okay i gotta post in one of these b/c i have not done so in awhile... this statement about the 30 mhz speed increase i can seriously see being the case... i mean what else does apple have left in terms of stretching the life span of the powerbooks? and ibooks for that matter... what's going to be interesting to see, at least i think so, is if apple will have some sort of "blow out sale" when the new mactel's come out sometime next year

How can you say this?

How do you know that this update will be ridiculous when it hasn't even happened yet? Also you don't even know when the switch to Intel will be made. You maybe waiting a long time.

This could either be a very nice bump, new GPU, faster FSB, cooler & faster G4, new HD screen, etc.

Or it could be a radical change, G5, DDR2, PCI-express, SATA HD, latest ATI GPU, extremely high-speed bus, etc.

Or it could be nothing at all.

Haha IM not waiting for anything. I have a Mac and love it and dont need to replace it anytime soon no matter what Apple releases. But im just saying that what we are gonna see in the next 2 years in Apples laptops is gonna be amazing. What they're doing with this next release is biding time and cleaning up the wherehouse by getting rid of all the powerpc processors they still have, and stretching them a bit more (30mhz). The reason why is because Intel kicks major butt. They have cool running, powerful processors, and they have them in Laptops (Not an easy task). In the next two years forget about dual core, triple core or whatever else. Theres only one word to be waiting for the in the next two years and its Cell.

I've overclocked my HP 49G+ to 200MHz :) (The only calculator that I know of that can be overclocked too)

Maybe

It's entirely possible that Apple is going to do just what you expect but it would be boring

I would still like to see one more killer release of the PPC PB. I think a G5 PB with a high speed FSB, highend GPU, SATA HD, and HD display would be just the ticket.:D

That would be enough of a kick to boost PB sales until MW2007 when the PB would get a truly redesigned 64 bit Merom chip and Leopard.

My scenario is much more fun than a 30Mhz bump in sept. and a wimpy Centrino processor with no software @ MW 2006.

Hmmm, I’d buy a 17” PB right now if it had a better screen. This is very promising news:

1. Dual-channel DDR2 SDRAM
2. Upgraded processor with 1MB Level 2 cache
3. Finally, a possible 1920x1200 WUXGA monitor hopefully on par with the XBrights w/ glare reduction.

Even if it’s just a 30MHz speed bump, the other speed increases along with a “real” system bus update should make for a decent update; unlike the one done earlier this year.

I’ve got $3300USD cash giving me a 3rd degree burn.

____________

12” PB… good riddens to the glorified iBook, doesn’t even operate in native High Definition. Heck, according to the report & Apple it's classified as such. A 13” wide PB that has similar specs with the to-be-updated PB 15" would be cool.
