Does it matter?

1. Make you buy a $30 bumper, case, tape, vinyl, etc.
2. Give bumpers away for free.
3. Re-engineer and re-produce the millions of iPhones that have been made and give them all away for free.

Anyone wanna make some bets? Enough people simply DON'T CARE because they just don't and there's a "fix" available and most people are happy with that.

Last year when I bought my MBP it also charged to my card immediately. I really didn't mind then, or now with the phone- I mean I got them both quickly and they both work. I am really not sure if there are laws about this or not, but it doesn't seem that uncommon. I'm sure I'm not the only one who was charged for their iPhone 4 before it shipped. And yeah, I'm in the US.

Putting a £2 piece of rubber around a £600 phone is not a GOOD LONGTERM fix. It may "fix" the problem in your eyes, but I wouldn't buy a convertable car that doesn't start when the roof is down, and then accept the "you must always drive it with the roof up" fix... would you?

Why do you feel a production run at 24 hours a day yields only 20,000 units?

Some production runs can yields 100,000 units or more. It all depends on the size and set up of the factory.

What does add up, however, is that Apple is a publicly traded company. It would be incredibly foolish of them to make public statements regarding the number of phones sold and then have to retract that when it became obvious in their SEC filings that the numbers where cooked.

You will when you try to sell it.

I'm actually not going to sell my iPhone 4. When a new model comes out i'm going to keep my iPhone 4 as a backup ;) And if i did sell it i'm sure i could find a buyer for it.

Right now iPhone 4's are still selling on craiglist so the threat of a so called recall has not impacted those sales. Also it's not all iPhone 4 units that are effected by this.

There is no reception issue with the iPhone 4.

There is a network reliability issue.

I have iPhone 4 on the O2 network - the reception is crap (same as 3GS) even standing next to a transmitting tower. I can replicate the reception issue quite easily.

My wife has iPhone 4 on the Orange network. The reception on the Orange network is superb. It is almost impossible to replicate the antenna issue on her phone.

GolfBravo, you don't know what you're talking about. The issue only affects low reception areas. There is a problem.

First Apple needs a solution. I'm wondering if they don't have one, other than a complete redesign of the phone. Best case may be if Apple could come up with a retrofit kit they could send to customers, but I don't see a recall.

More likely we'll probably see Bumper cases to any iPhone 4 customer who wants one, or perhaps just a $29 store credit. That's the easiest thing to do.

Worst case, maybe Apple will offer to exchange iPhone 4's for a 3GS w/ a $100 store credit.

Did you read his post?

And also, I keep hearing everyone say that this problem can only be replicated in low reception areas... well isn't the low reception the issue then? It's like saying there is a performance issue with your car but only when you put cheap gas in it. I thought reception in low reception areas was always crappy.

The difference between low and no reception is you can still you a phone in low reception.

I have issues and I live in Los Angeles. That's a pretty big deal. I love Apple and their products but I really think I'm going to return the phone and maybe repurchase it when they fix the issues (a real fix not just pulling a software curtain over the issue) or switch to Android.

I'm disappointed with the way this whole thing has been handled and as Apple continues to grow, so does their ego and lack of ability to admit fault.

This "recall" is total B.S. I have had absolutely no problems with my IP4. I have had better reception than I ever had on my 3G. Dropped calls are still a problem with AT&T and is something that THEY need to fix. I have had absolutely no attenuation issues at all.

That's an interesting take -- but even HE hasn't done any testing.

Exactly. He's just a wordpress blogger. If he is such a great engineer, he should apply to Apple and fix the issue since there obviously is one rather than saying the tests were done poorly.

I don't need a scientific test to prove my phone has problems. If I can't use it like a normal phone...its got problems.

In regard to a supposed "recall," i'll be very surprised to see apple do this. To the best of my knowledge and unscientific questioning of friends who have the iPhone 4, it's a software glitch that will be fixed soon. I think the Internet, media, and competition have exacerbated the whole thing like the iPad wifi issues a few months ago.

how the hell is software going to fix it? i don't give a damn about how many bars i see.... take them all away for all i care..... but when i hold my iphone4 the SAME EXACT WAY I HELD MY 3GS FOR THE PAST YEAR.... all of the sudden i lose the ability to connect to data/internet...???????? that's not a software issue..... it's a hardware issue! UGH..... fanboys....

i discovered MY issue on my own..... i hadn't read anything about it when it first happened.... i came here to report and it found out it had already exploded.... i'm really sick and tired of the posters that try to say this is all exaggerated... in our heads.... etc.... apple ****ED up! they need to fix it! i still love all the things that my iphone 4 has the potential to do.... but apple needs to step up to the plate and FIX IT!

Apple's initial response was BS. Apple's letter about their formula being wrong was BS.

I'm glad you're not having issues. Stop trying to project that on to the ones that are.

Yeah, I don't like a guy taking pot-shots at someone who has obviously DONE some testing, when he hasn't done any testing himself.

If he really wants to impress me, he should DO the testing, in the manner he describes. If he needs some money for it -- ask. I'll be happy to donate some money to help him set up some serious, legitimate testing.

For his sake, I fear he's going to find that all the people who have already tested the iPhone 4's antenna are correct -- the design IS flawed.

I don't know how one can compare hardware problem to software problem. This to me clearly looks like a hardware issue. Not sure how software update is going to fix this. But again, Im not the one who designed this product.

It's easy and, a software issue, Apple is going to pay ATT a lot of money to temporarily double their signal strength. :)

Here is a thought.

Everyone who can not make calls on their new phones should return them since they are having such terrible issues. Everyone who has a phone that works fine can go on their merry way.

"Yep, they are morons for making the active antenna external. Hide it in glass, plastic, whatever.. never expose the thing... Grabbing basically any other antenna has a similar effect -usually the effect isn't so obvious, because we don't normally grab 2ghz antennae. Your flesh effectively changes the wavelength of the dipole, hence the reflected power (the power going back into the transmitter, the opposite of effective radiated power) increases. This will, over time, damage the transmitter. Apple had better recall these things while they still can.. or they're going to have a few hundred thousand bricks on their hands."

And there's nothing wrong with that, other than the fees people have paid to AT&T, etc. to get the iPhone 4. Is Apple going to pay for my activation fee, too? I mean, I wouldn't have incured that fee if I hadn't purchased the iPhone 4.
