OK, so your iPhone 4 experience may ending up costing you $4.99...

Sure, now that apple has waived restocking fees (of course, I bought from Apple. Other retailers may not play along).

But I'm not sure what your point is. Many people seem to think that when a product has a design flaw and the manufacturer won't admit it, and, even goes as far as to make stupid public statements like "you're holding it wrong," our only recourse is to return it.

We're not allowed to:
1) talk about the problem
2) try to convince apple to fix the problem
3) speculate about the problem
4) point out that the supposed "fix" won't solve the problem

Why?

The fact that there is a remedy that leaves me no worse off doesn't mean I can't wish to be even better off than I was. I'd like Apple to sell an i4 that works properly. It would be the best phone ever if it could reliably make calls in places the 3gs can. If talking about it puts the heat on apple to actually do something about it, why does this offend people so much?

The HTC Evo is junk? Okay partner. I own an iPhone and can say that the HTC Evo is a pretty impressive device.

Separation of screen glass/light leaks, problems with screen responsiveness, horrific battery life. None of which made the CNN evening news report.

it's very simple. not happy with it. Return it.

Yes, return it. It will actually hurt Apple more to sit on hundreds of thousands of phones that are returned than to issue a recall/REA. With an REA Apple will replace a minor part of the phone with a coated version of a minor part of the phone for small change.

With a return Apple will have to sit on the phone, take more of a hit selling it as refurbished, then possibly repairing it down the line.

Suggesting to return it is not actually in Apples interests. But great advice for people who are nearing the end of their 30 day return window.

You're still a troll though.

Toyota-style disaster, yeah right. No one's lives are in danger, its just a reception issue, people go crazy when they find something wrong with Apple's products. It may be Apple's fault, but they are working on a fix, and I am sure that they will try to get it all worked out.

They've only admitted working on a "fix" (I use that term loosely) for the way the phone displays signal strength. They will need to go back to the drawing board to revamp the phone's design regarding the phone's actual reception.

Also, Apple has refused to even acknowledge that some iPhone 4's are having a huge problem with the proximity sensor. That is a big problem. Apple needs to acknowledge this issue. The only two reasons I can fathom that Apple hasn't acknowledged the issue are a.) they're not sure what the problem is or b.) it is a hardware problem and they're worried that if they admit to it instead of acting shocked whenever someone shows the problem to them, the chances of a recall will skyrocket even more. If they aren't able to pinpoint the problem, I am very disappointed in the brilliant minds that Apple pays millions of dollars to every year.

This is now more of a PR disaster

A fix has not even been issued by Apple yet and already people are climbing over themselves to force a recall. I think people should give Apple a little time to fix this properly before calling for such a drastic action.

Might not be a widespread hardware issue maybe a few batches but time is not on Apples side.

They need to be proactive and treat this thing seriously and keep Jobs out of it.

Hold the phone a different way will go down in history as one of the dumbest comments along with "there ain't no Indians around here!", G. A. Custer.

Excellent post, good points. People who have problems should be able to talk about it and complain. They pay good money after all.

This is kinda stupid from Apple, that they pretend the problem just doesn't exist. On the other hand, I can't imagine every single iPhone 4 sold to be recalled. That would be ridiculous, and how would they fix this? Change the antenna location, add a plastic coating, all within a month or something? The longer it takes to fix the more devices they will have to recall. And this is Apple, they take 1 year to design even the smallest details. They aren't going to say "oh whatever, let's just add this ugly plastic edge and voila!". So if they want to fix this, it's going to take lots of time to redesign the phone. This new antenna thing is the basic component of the phone, it can't just be relocated or something.

Ok. ..this issue has been going on now for a while....WHERE ARE THE MASSES OF PEOPLE LINING UP TO RETURN THEIR PHONES?

Oh...right...because they aren't. If they were then everyone who analyzes these things would know and report it.

People aren't returning them because for the VAST majority of people this is a NON-ISSUE.

For a minority, albeit a very VOCAL minority it is a problem, yet they seemingly have found themselves incapable of returning it.

Why are people holding on to this phone if it sucks so bad?

EXACTAMUNDO !!

They're holding onto them because they're great phones... Nothing better out there.

AtomicBatteries (or whatever TF you handle is). Reread my post - we are waiting for the WHITE models. We'll be glad to get them and matching cases... Shove off

Buy a case, or return your phone...

Plus we all know that its not so simple to just "return it". Plus who cares. People paid good money. If they wana b*tch let them. Apple isn't doing anything about it YET. Maybe this will help them fix it.

I don't even own an Android device.

Well, my issue with the "return it" mantra is that over here in the UK you are locked into a contract with the network so it isn't as simple as "return it".

http://www.o2.co.uk/termsandconditions/iphone

10.1 In addition to any other rights you have, and subject to paragraph 10.3 below, you may cancel this Agreement without liability for the remaining monthly subscription payments and return your Mobile Phone for a full refund:

Anyone in the UK who purchased an iPhone 4 through the Carphone Warehouse on o2 are simply screwed.

you know what!! I'm calling bullshlt!!! We see a million videos from people demonstrating the drop when held.. I have NEVER seen a video of someone showing it in a death grip outside without it dropping!!!

For all those who claim it isn't a problem prove yourselves, show it both not drop indoors when holding and outdoors when holding then maybe we will believe there are some that work out there

Wow. 'Millions of videos', huh?
Impressive ******** of your own there.

You can blame Apple for the negative and positive media. They created this monster. I never once said the Evo was the best thing available, all I stated was its an impressive device.

Some of us really like the phone, we just wish it worked properly. Is it really that difficult to understand that we don't want to go back to our 3GSs or the Android alternatives?

Look at the image from Consumer Reports (reproduced at the top of the post). Of course the call failed. 1 (234) 5. I bet that's not even a real phone number.

Don't be silly -- Consumer Reports was using a test set in a RF chamber to ensure the accuracy of the results. You don't call 'real' phone numbers when using a test set.

you have 4 options.

1) hold the phone differently

2) buy a case (99% of iPhone users do anyway)

3) Return the phone

4) Buy an Android phone.

I'm thinking it was supposed to have this problem. Its Steve's anti-porn stance again, it stops us from holding the phone in our left hand and our disco sticks in the other.

HTC isn't exactly the media darling that Apple is. It's also not expected to have fantastic products. Apple's major problem here is that they ARE held to a higher standard, and they are rightfully so. Their products overall are great, far better than competitors in reliability and functionality. Again, this is Apple's black sheep. They overlooked real world testing to keep secrecy intact. This MO may need to change in the future for mobile devices. They just can't be real-world tested away from real-world usage.

They are probably going to issue a software fix that iPhone 4 will show full bars no matter how you hold it. Well, full bars in no ATT coverage area. Failed.
