Apple is going to eliminate bars altogether. Why do we need them? Phone either works or it doesn't and if it doesn't then it's AT&T fault anyway.

I mean bars are so early 90s cell phone indicators. This is Apple, think different. And don't forget the iPhone 4 is going to change everything. Again.

They didn't do it with their shi**y 1st Gen MBA which overheated all the time and couldn't even play a YouTube video, so why would they do it with an iPhone, especially if people are dumb enough to still buy it after the antenna issues.

Thank you.

Apple will never recall this.

They know that a good percentage of the buyers so far will never return it, no matter what the problem.

They'll offer an open-ended return period for the people that the upcoming software "fix" doesn't placate, and quietly fix the problem before the white version is released.

I still think the fact that a) the Apple online store (in the UK anyway) continues to show 3 weeks for delivery on an iPhone 4 and has done since days after launch, and b) the white iPhone is no closer to release, means that something could possibly be going on behind the scenes.

I appreciate stock is low after launch, but it's been three weeks since launch and the online store still says 3 weeks for delivery.

you have 4 options.

1) hold the phone differently

2) buy a case (99% of iPhone users do anyway)

3) Return the phone

4) Buy an Android phone.

1) In the 21st century you shouldn't have to "hold the phone differently" in order for it to make calls. The only acceptable thing is that you don't put your finger in front of the camera lens while taking a photo, or on the microphone while talking. But the antenna? That was never a problem.

2) No, not 99% of people use a case for their phone. Many people (way more than 1%) actually like to see and feel Apple's design instead of a cheap Chinese plastic case..

3) Return the phone? Can you also return the contract?

4) :D

Here is my thoughts on why this is now happening:

1. There is likely a ATT tower located extremely close to Apple's campus, if not on. The signal was likely strong enough to not see much loss in the labs there.

2. Like Mr. Powell's iPhone 4, all of the phones that left the campus were in disguise cases so nobody knew what they were. In those cases the antenna's were not touched.

I can't see there being a mass recall, as many users are reporting nothing wrong with their phones. I know there are many having problems and that's unacceptable but if everyone could replicate this problem thats the only way Apple would do a recall.

Apple's whole handling on this situation has been extremely appalling. First denying all problem telling people to hold it differently to releasing a frankly bizarre half-baked statement about signal representation.

To the people constantly whining "take it back and get an evo LOLZ" "if you don't like it take it back....bla bla bla" it just isn't that simple. Apple has created an ecosystem and many users have invested a lot in iTunes music, videos, and apps and if they move to the competition that would be a lot of money they have just thrown down the drain.

I haven't got a clue what Apple should do, but I know they need some damage limitation soon.

...but you can't get an Evo they are sold out.

There have been multiple podcasts recently with RF engineers as guests. These experts have said that the problem is unrelated to bridging the seam.

Then they are insane RF engineers when a finger tip can do it and the rest of the mass of the body is far away from the phone. People who actually do testing say there is a qualitative difference between normal holding attenuation of a cell signal and what's happening withe the iP4.

Here's a 'solution':

One of us should build a time machine, go back in time and leave one the iPhone 4 in a bar. This way, normal people can see the design flaw and chime in.

Hell, I may do this tonight. That'll show them.

MacRumors has officially become THE place for anti-Apple folk to come and bitch about Apple and throw around the "fanboy" word for fun.

How pathetic.

On the news yesterday they interview some people asking if they would still buy an iPhone 4 even with the issues. They said yes. Why? The lady with two kid says "I'd just hold it different." And this was a report about the study yesterday. It may be a PR disaster to the Internet but the average consumer will move there hand up half an inch and get on with their life, or buy a bumper. I can't hold my 3G certain ways either I find pages not loading with 5 bars and once my hand leaves the bottom of the phone it loads. But for it is a nonissue, I was going to get a black bumper for my white phone for the contrast before this issue came out.

Fanboy, If I someone returns it, might have sold their old iPhone already, so they would be screwed. Its a major fail that we should have to return it. Why is Apple still selling this defective phone?

Honestly who is the bigger fanboy? The one who is completely satisfied with his device, or the one who isn't but refuses to return it?

Thought I didnt have the issue

Alot of people that are saying they dont have an issue are most likely looking at the bars.....which I did first....until I used a speed test app and boy, I had the issue. I couldnt even run the speedtest until I put my finger off of it. I still love my phone and currently have a case on it. no issue here anymore.

God this whining gets old.

RETURN THE ****ING PHONE YOU MORONS

Why can we whine? Apple made a product with a design flaw. They took out $200 or $300, they wanyt our $30 to "fix" the problem. if we want to return it, we have to fight with the store manager to waive the restocking fee on a defective POS. Apple should have tested the main feature of this phone, and that is the phone function. Its just a pathetic design flaw, and its so funny how it could make it past QC. Now that people paid so much for it, we should be able to whine because its such a PATHETIC and OBVIOUS issue. The phone can't do its number one function (making phone calls)

Well, if they *do* recall the phone, I hope their 'fix' doesn't change the increase in cell phone signal that I personally get when I bridge the antenna with my fingertip.

/yeah, I'm an antenna or something
//glad I'm not a ground like some of you

There is no restocking fee at an Apple store. Go to one and shut up.

All phones are perfect, only Apple is a problem?

Every other phone on AT&T's network has been just fine..this thread is about the device not the network

Er...*********. A quick Google search will show you otherwise. That search will ALSO show you that ALL cell phones, for many years, have had attenuation problems. Even if the antenna is housed or otherwise shielded.

But something tells me that this issue will bring out the Apple-hating trolls in force. Which is entirely missing the point, of course.

Your sample size of one is VERY convincing.

Oooh, a black bumper on a white phone is teh HOTNESS!

If the software fix is a bad software fix like when they down-clocked the MBA with heating then we are all f*cked LOL (Well I'm not, I didn't buy the iPhone :p)

I've never had the problem. My wife hasn't had it with hers, either.

Neither have my six co-workers who have the 4.

Neither have three friends who have it, too. None of these folks have "bumper" cases or other covers. They use it normally.

Honestly? I had reception problems with my Samsung phone I had with Verizon.

Prediction? Apple will sell millions more iPhone 4s, and the pundits can suck it, like they always do. Especially Gizmodo, who comes off these days sounding like a shrieking, spurned, unrequited Justin Beiber fan.

I agree with all of that. I used to live Gizmodo but ever since they paid for that iPhone and got busted they sure are grumpy

Separation of screen glass/light leaks, problems with screen responsiveness, horrific battery life. None of which made the CNN evening news report.

Don't worry, those issue happened to iPhone owners. Not the iPhone 4, but the 3G/3GS and original. The glass on my original iPhone started to separate, and the touch screen failed. My 3G and 3GS had light leaks and crocked buttons.
