In addition to the Technology sector, why isn’t Warren targeting U.S. Telecoms like Verizon, AT&T and a potentially merged T-Mobile and Sprint? There’s a huge gap between them and the smaller, lesser known carriers who can’t get a strong foothold in the market due to the big guys controlling all the infrastructure.

Here’s the reason: special interest groups and lobbyists on Capitol Hill. She won’t bite the hands that feed her.

Not as looney as her colleagues. Yikes. Look at AOC.

Although these days, you basically have to adapt to whatever your party is pushing, else they disown you and pull your funding. So in some capacity, her and most of the current Dem candidates are one in the same. Which is really too bad. I'd love to see some more moderate candidates. I felt that the Dems of yesteryear still loved their country.
I agree completely. I don't want Republicans taking my vote for granted (they have enough of their own problems). I would really love to see at least 2 viable, sane candidates on for each office on the general election ballot so I could feel like I was voting FOR the one I like the most instead of voting AGAINST the one I dislike the most.

I was hoping we could go just a little longer before the next election cycle really began. Sigh . . . .
It has never stopped for tRUMP.

While I think antitrust laws have been neutered over the last 50 years, I don’t think this is the particular way to “go after” the oligarchy of technology. Besides, a President can’t ultimately force legislation as Congress needs to pass it and it likely won’t happen. Too many $$$ at work for that. Executive orders likely wouldn’t apply and would be overridden anyway.

The answer is simple: enforce current antitrust laws and stop allowing mergers that go against them. Genie is already out of the bottle, though, and there is little gumption left in government to address real issues. Hasn’t been for decades.

Too many lobbyists for those big companies.
All the Baby Bells were broken up, weren't they? Now we have the same huge Bell known as AT&T.

...I think too many tech giants have grown to such tremendous size and power because a long series of cons involving planned obsolescence and vaguely written EULA's that have allowed them to do virtually whatever they wanted without the customer having any idea what they'd signed up for that...

I absolutely agree with you about the vaguely written EULAs. I doubt even 1 in 1,000 users actually read them and it really doesn't matter because unless they are an attorney, they probably wouldn't understand it anyway. Nobody states in their EULA that they will share your data with "company A, company B and company C". They vaguely refer to "our partners" or "third parties" which is an ever changing list of companies that want your data. They also never tell you specifically what they will do with your data but again use vague terms such as "research and marketing purposes".

What I would like to see is something like a food label on all apps and software. Rather than calories and sodium content, the app "food label" would contain simple categories such as "location data", "browser history", "search history", "health data" and the app would have to specifically state if it "accesses", "stores" (on device or on their servers) or "sells / shares" data from each category for any reason whatsoever. Even if you trust the company that made the app, if that company stores your data and is then bought out by Facebook or a Chinese Government owned company - your data is now in the hands of people you might not want to have it.

What about the military-industrial complex?
Any ideas how to curtail the powers of the myriad of contractors that are literally sucking the government dry?
Far more pressing problems, IMO.

Also, will China also split up Tencent and Baidu? Huawei?

No clue if many of you listened to her interviews, her proposals are to increase competition, just like any anti-monopoly proposal, not to allow an entity like Amazon or Facebook to have complete control over it’s marketplace, promoting who it prefers, even it’s own products, and pushing others to the back page for it’s own financial advantage.

Of course they would! There are all kinds of companies out there that want that data. Advertising companies you've never heard of. They will always pay for the data. And political campaigns want that data as well. Everyone could stop using facebook today and they'd still be collecting, and paying for your data from a variety of sources. Data is the most valuable thing. And companies will buy it no matter what.

It's not just android phones, it's iphones too. At last count 70 ios apps are known to be sharing your data with facebook even if you don't have an account. It would blow your mind the data companies have collected on you. And not just now in the digital age but even long before the personal computer. Facebook could fade from public view but they'd still be able to collect and use your data to make them rich. You may think you're not using facebook so they don't have your data but you'd be sooooo wrong. And the data isn't just to advertise to you, they also use it to manipulate you.

You really don't have as much choice as you think you do.

Consumers have much more power to affect smaller businesses through their choices. But the larger a company gets the more they have their hands in everything and the harder it is to completely avoid them. You could not use android, not use any google app or service and you'd still be using google. It's impossible to access the internet and not. Same for amazon. You could never buy a product or use their service and you still couldn't use the net without them. Or various services from other companies that use them. If everyone stopped buying amazon products their store front would die off but there is a lot more to amazon than just the store. They would survive.

Thus you've lost your ability to choose.

Yea, I wear my tin foil hat so it does not effect me. OTH from monitoring my network, I just don't see this at all. So it is possible to not let Facebook control your life. You might want to learn a bit more before you give the government absolute power to control everything as it will be a lot better for your children and grandchildren.

Big business or big government? At least consumers have a choice about one of them.
What makes them separate entities any more? The most powerful global corporations in the history of the world work with each other and partner up with players in government to dominate and control the media, information, technology and financial systems. Instead of free market capitalism they have been using crony capitalism to establish a global technocracy.

Putting the brakes on merger mania in the corporate world isn't all that radical. Guaranteed the majority of voters have concerns about the power of huge corporations.
So Trump was being an honest Populist by trying to stop AT&T Time Warner.
[doublepost=1552164277][/doublepost]Mr Cook needs to stop fighting his personal political wars and grasp that his support of Dems will destroy Apple, on his watch, because of him.

How do you feel about credit ratings?

While that’s entirely true, it’s also just the natural course of capitalism itself. We need to stop with this phony “crony capitalism” nonsense. All the power brokers attend the same parties and conferences, this is what happens when obscene wealth concentrates so tightly. It’s capitalism taken to its natural conclusion, not a flaw in its implementation.

As a right leaning voter, this is actually one of the few areas where I agree with people like Senator Warren.

I don’t believe Apple has any monopoly, but I think there is a case to be made that Amazon/Google/Facebook are too big and have too many sister companies that aid the “parent” business. And don’t forget that Google’s parent company is Alphabet, who literally owns an entire alphabet of companies and subsidiaries.

She's right about the problem of big corps buying up small ones. I doubt this is the right solution. Also I have little trust for Elizabeth Warren, only slightly more than Trump.

That means a Senator will decide whether or not you are allowed to be in business.

And lost Bell Labs, the greatest creator of wealth in this country. Liberals destroy.
Really liberals created MSFT, Amazon, Apple, Google etc...

I agree with her on mergers that snuff out competition.

I mean....you could always NOT use Facebook, right? Oh wait, then you can’t post totally worthless photos of your kids soccer games or whatever other useless crap that you think people actually give a rats fanny about. My goodness, get over yourselves with this "hey look at me" social media nonsense.

Record-low unemployment for hispanics and blacks, strong GDP, rising wages. Sorry, what was your point?

Thus lies the difference between actual and perceived reality. Just because YOU feel targeted by the president and feel that the world is crashing down as a result, doesn't mean that you actually are targeted or that the world is crashing down. Just some food for thought.

lmfao, I don't feel targeted by him or that the world is crashing down . nice hyperbole. I am sure that trump alone is responsible to the lower unemployment rate and that the trend that was occurring before him taking office is purely random.

Calm down all of your precious snowflakes... Warren was never a mainstream candidate. Wait for Joe Biden to throw his hat into the ring. A Biden-Sanders ticket is a winning ticket.

No ticket with Sanders on it is a winning ticket.

Apple has such a small market share that it's probably immune to horizontal monopoly action. As long as they allow access to the App Stores to competitors they can't be sued for having a vertical monopoly.
[doublepost=1552066777][/doublepost]
That's a racist comment.

I was about to tell you how wrong you are, but I noticed you live in fluffy Seattle-land, so your ignorant accusation makes perfect sense.

Ageism has no place here.

Why don't you let those of us who are 60+ make that call.

We don't need some triggered millennial speaking for us. That's the last thing we need.

Never forget the Capitalists and Market Forces that provided the cash for the "Intellectual Altruism" that people represent Silicon Valley Tech to be.

If only everyone would agree on viable safety nets as opposed to vengeance politics, people could allow respect for others but at this point is seems to be freedom vs control... Right vs Left... shame.

The Ds need to get their crap together because stuff like this is going to get us another four years of President Trump.
Four more years of #winning. It’s gonna happen and 3/4th of th country, including my self are PUMPED! Dems have been making themselves look bad for the last two years, why would any resonance Americans who lives inbetween Cali and DC ever vote Democrat?

I’ll refer you to the 2016 county presidential election map, I’m sure there will be a lot more red this time around, looking like a version coverage map.

Yup...She's done. Besides all of the companies would sue and probably win at SCOTUS

If there are true antitrust cases to be made, then the DoJ should pursue them, not a politician. Unless the DoJ is claiming it cannot prosecute due to a lack of antitrust staff and resources, which could be fixed, it's a bad idea to mix politics and justice. I say this even as a leftie. Besides, if you want to break up companies that are too big, let us start with the banks.
