I just had a thought.

What if they redesigned the mac mini to be that "Modular Mac Pro" that we heard about.

All they need to do is beef up the cooling potential of the Mac Mini, add a dedicated GPU stackabe module, and then an 1 Hard Drive / Flash Storage module all connected by PCIe or whatever. The Mac mini already has the potential and is a very strong starting point. It just needs to have the capability to expand.

I’d love to see the Mac Mini in the trashcan or metal cube form factor. Even 1 PCI-E slot would improve it so much from the current chassis. I haven’t liked Apple’s obsession with thinness in recent years. But with Jony Ive gone, I can feel a resurgence of the Macs. May or may not be related to him, who knows, but I’m happy that Apple is focusing on desktop computers again.

Mini needs better GPU. Many 2018 mini reviews all noted 4K video editing was sub-optimal thanks to the wimpy integrated Intel GPU.

4K video editing doesn't sound like a "casual" task, not something that the target audience of the Mac mini is aimed at (or at least should be). The Mac mini was meant to be a entry-level computer, not a powerhouse beast in a small package. Apple has recently beefed up the specs, and the price, and I think that was the wrong move. It removed the mini from the original target audience completely. Who would buy what *should be* an entry-level computer, yet pay a premium price? It's just off balance.

If it’s a press release I highly doubt a redesigned iMac is on the cards. By the sounds of it the iMac Pro will see the new design first at the end of the year followed by the regular one next spring.

As for the Mac Mini I’m hoping they’ve removed the power supply from inside to be external and put a proper GPU inside it. Been tempted to go Mac Mini with a curved display for a while but the GPU is rubbish. I’m not willing to shell out for the eGPU. I’ve always hated things being attached externally it’s not very neat.
I highly doubt it. Being deployed in server farms is one of the main uses of the Mac Mini.

That low-cost entry-level Mac Mini that you knew and love stopped being that when the major update happened in 2018. The Mini is a powerful computer for specialized. Go the Versatility heading on this page and it'll give you an idea of the kinds of tasks the Mini is now aimed at

Based on the discussions in the Mac Mini area, I don't buy an update this soon, based on CPU options/roadmap (combined with thermal limits, etc.)

I'd like Mac Mini with some graphics horsepower. A Ryzen APU would suffice. I love my Mac Mini, but it struggles with FCP, and I don't want an ungainly external GPU.

Yeah, I've mentioned before I'd like to see an Apple designed eGPU product because not only could they do something aesthetically very slick (see quoted post below), but I feel like that would get them a little more invested in really dialing in the eGPU experience.

I highly doubt either will see any design changes. This is purely a spec bump. I'd hope at least though that they move to all flash, which they probably should've done almost 10 years ago. Hopeful that better GPU comes with the new Mac mini, might be enough for me to buy one.

I highly doubt we will see a repeat of the 2003 20-inch or 2006 24-inch iMacs, which came the year before a redesign. I just cannot see them making a 32-inch version of the current design.

iMac Pro looks like abandoned-ware if it doesn't get any updates. They should just use the iMac Pro design and put in iMac hardware in it but include a door for easy access to the SSD and memory. Keep the 1080p camera or upgrade it to 4K.

Blah. I just bought a new iMac 2 months ago.

haha, so did I. And to be honest I'm loving it, mostly on account of the 5K screen. And no, I don't feel bad about this, because, well, they might ruin it. You know, price it out of my range, remove the option to swap RAM, get some dumb wide curved screen on it, maybe even that awful-looking bent-piece-of-glass design we saw a rumour of a little while back.

But practically what could they add? CPUs are crap, GPUs maybe 5700? So if they don't do redesign or something bigger than why bother at all?
Intel is seriously behind AMD and the difference between 9th gen and 10th is minimal, right?
So apart from better GPU are we really getting anything?
The redesign should be done, better thermals, bigger screen and smaller bezels.
If nothing, than at least smaller bezels. They look terrible and so inconsistent with the rest of the line.

10th gen Intel desktop CPUs are absolutely not crap. They are significant upgrades from 8th gen in the current iMac and Mini.

That's my only complaint with my 2019 iMac. The Fusion SSD is much too small, and the paired HDD is much too slow.
Apple needs to get rid of the fusion drive in the stock 27" iMac. Keep it in the 21.5" if you want but the 27" should not have a spinning drive in it.

I would love a new 5K iMac, I’m still using the 2012 redesign model. But I really want to wait until there is a redesign. I really hope they redesign the iMac soon, I’m not sure how long I can hold out.

Can hardly wait for the imac. Hoping for wifi 6 and face id. Getting a new one now regardless though. Still rocking a 2007 core 2 duo 😯

Having bought the 2019 version last July, selfishly I’m hoping there isn’t a mindblowing update. I’ll have regret not holding out longer. :)

Might make reselling a current version more challenging if they present a revolutionary iMac. I’m being too optimistic!

To be fair, I've never had a problem (4K remux Plex streaming, Steam games like BL2, Photoshop, etc.) with the 7200 rpm HDD + 128GB SSD Fusion drive in my 21.5" iMac, but would love to see an affordable 2-3TB SSD option. TAKE. MY. MONEY.

Almost forgot, Face ID and a 1080p Facetime camera would be cool, too.

While the iMac is overdue for a new design, the Mac mini simply needs an upgraded GPU.

The current Mini has terrible thermals and keeps throttling the CPU, plus it's using an outdated 6-core CPU.

It can definitely use an upgrade.

I 'm not a leaker neither an mentalist or a guru, but reading carefully all the leaks, its moreless safe bet the following Mac Products in March/april release:

  • MBP 14.1 with new-old non butterfly keyboard and latest Intel CPUs, same CPU updates for MBP16 (this is the safecst bet).
  • All AMD (no arm beyond T2/T3 chip) Mac Mini, Using AMD semi-custom Renoir Mobile APU (8c Navi11/12), likely no exterior changes.
  • All AMD iMac 21, same AMD Renoir Mobile APU as Mac mini
  • All AMD iMac 27, AMD semi-custom Renoir Desktop 8-16 cores with beefier NAVI21/23 GPU.
All AMD APUs manufactured by Apple (with AMD license) maybe Re-branded as Apple M1/M2 APUs or whatever marketing decides sound Apple and not Intel/AMD.

Also is safe to predict the New iMac to look a lot like the new Pro Display HDR, since its full of useless (the pro display) holes, this is a way to justify those (actually needed) holes in the iMac, those holes enable enough cooling airflow to enable TDP rise and no Throtling, both mandatory in case Apple is planning a Gaming iMac.

The current Mini has terrible thermals and keeps throttling the CPU

This does not appear to be true.

I wonder what kind of market there is for a Mac Micro/Nano/whatever appropriate name, that's just one of those HDMI stick computers. Just plug it directly into a monitor's HDMI port, have 1-2 ThunderBolt ports, and a headphone jack. Very simple, low powered for those who just want a stationary, large screened computer.
