(PRODUCT)RED iPhone 7 Plus Gets Black Front in New Part Swap Video

Apple = White. Wether its AirPods, iPhone Screens EarPods etc, etc, etc, that seems to be their identifying factor.

I don't get this obsession with black front, red back. That particular colour combination is too aggressive, especially for a brand like Apple. It worked better on the U2 iPod because rock n' roll was essentially the theme, but on an iPhone? Nope.

That said, to each his own.

Just looks much better then white. Even better would be to match the front and back color together.

Very nice looking. I wouldn't buy a iPhone with a white front.

Red and black, very nice (I prefer red convertibles with black rag tops too, BTW :) ).

I wish the silver iPhone would have a black front as well. Might have bought that instead of space black.

Definitely looks better. Matches the black camera module on the back.

I'm just not a fan of white electronics any more. It's been Apple's signature for at least a decade but I think it's wearing thin/falling out of fashion. It was cool 15 years ago with the iPod, now not so much. The white look is bordering on retro and is synonymous with cheap plastic now. There'll always be a place and need for white devices for those that like ultra-modern "white box" interiors but it's not my taste. All my best electronics are black and it's much sleeker, especially when paired with a nice hardwood or leather.

It was Steve's vision after all that he wanted technology to fade into the background and only its functionality to step forward. That's why they switched to an entirely black bezel on the Cinema Display and iMacs so you only saw the screen. White is tacky because it's very intention is to stand out and scream "look at me".

I wish Apple would include black lightning cables and AC adapters with black versions of their phones but alas in their bean-counter ways they won't. There was a time when Apple did care about the finer details like that. Remember when the iMacs had colour-matched keyboards? I'd probably even replace my AirPort Express with a black version if I could. At least the AppleTV is a sexy black.

The worst and by far ugliest example of Apple's white love of white is that behemoth of an AirPort Extreme/Time Capsule.

I would be willing to bet $500 on this.

Under Jobs, if the part from the black iPhone wasn't the right shade to compliment the red aluminum, he would have had them try 15 other shades of black to find the right one. Under Cook, this is an accounting decision. Which color are we overstocked on? Yeah, perfect, use that one!

Always good to hear from those who know the internal workings of Apple... would have thought Jonny Ive might have had final say on the colour rather than the accounting department. Look forward to seeing the doco on how they arrived at this decision. ;)

Perhaps when the borderless iPhone 8/X/Edition arrives they will all have black fronts when the screen isn't lit. Guess it will depend how much real estate the pixels take up and what is left. Would be a good way to trim stocked items though: no more black or white options to hold and guess inventory. Just the one front again.

If you don't like the look of it as-is, then don't buy it, instead of whining about it impotently on a forum nobody at Apple will read.
Use your consumer power. If you're right, and "nobody" likes the white front, it will be reflected in sales and Apple will re-evaluate it. This is how the market works.
Or, more likely, nothing will change because nobody cares what you think about what they "should" have done, because it's just your opinion and not a fact. Particularly given all the other purchasing options available to you.

Umm..I guess this is what you'd call 'mix & match' Shame not everyone would do this a logic board replacement is needed, but maybe people can find excuses to tell Apple to get them to otherwise re-validate Touch ID. :D

They'll fall for it.... I bet. Just make it good

Kudos to this guy for daring to do this.

I second this. Aside from the financial costs, you want to make sure you or a trusted third-party retailer know what they are doing when switching out the display. I have read where some have attempted this on their own and all sorts of issues went wrong during the process.

And You have to consider, the iPhone 7 has a water resistant seal to work with.

IMO both of you nailed it with this assessment. 100% my sentiment exactly.

Doesn't matter if if looks good, it looks un-Apple like.

What I mean is, it's fine if you want to do this and own this but it's crazy to think Apple would have actually done this themselves.
This is a weird proclimation...you're basing this on what exactly?

Judging from the article's comments I've read so far, and other MR articles on the same topic, the forum seems evenly split on whether the Red iPhone looks better with a white or black front. After all, regardless of your own personal preference, Apple does give consumers an iPhone color choice, and it's really no different in this specific case.

And look a black Touch ID ring, it even alingns with other "product red" , products from the past.

The worst thing about the new red iPhone is the silver Touch ID ring, completely out of place, $$$ ahead of branding. It should have been white like all other product red offerings in the past that had a home button

It honestly looks like something Samsung or another handset maker would do. It's as awful looking as a gold/black combo would be.

Nah , Samsung version was cooler...if you were an iron man fan :p they even matched the ring around the home button correctly

Black is beautiful. I almost drove myself insane when I bought a white iPhone. It was so ugly and distracting. I had to return it and get black. Never again will I make that mistake.

I'm sure that's what a lot of people will do. Not buy it. Having an issue with a product often means we want to be able to buy it if they made it right. (yep, I said right on purpose, I know how it sounds) As for complaining on a forum. That's basically 80% of what happens on forums.

That's done right. The front matches the color. Apple can't seem to do that.

The Sony Xperia is a beautiful phone. Black, square, waterproof, has a headphone jack and reasonable battery life. Red? Seems to me Apple is short of ideas.

black bezel is far more elegant:

1) when it is off on the table one only see one black object, not a white bezel with a black hole
2) when it is on showing something a black bezel is only one bezel, while the white bezel has another 1 mm gab between the bezel and the screen content

Seems you are short of understanding the meaning behind why Apple chose Red? It's called Product Red for a reason in support of research for Aids. They didn't choose Red because they thought it was a More popular, they chose Red for the actual significant meaning behind it and what it stands for, hence the title of this thread.

I don't care for what reason they bring this red color but the phone looks ugly with white & red combination, the black front would have changed the whole story

Thanks. Except in China where it's just a red phone (maybe for the Maoist patriots?). Anyway, somehow this red color has resulted in less than $10 million donations per year from Apple for AIDS research (aside from Jobs' personal donations which were phenomenal), so it lacks credibility to me. As has been said basically every year, they could be awesome and just donate $100 million for AIDS research and prevention without making a big song and dance of it.

But fact is, it still has significance for what it stands for, regardless of monetary means or what Jobs contributed, which is irrevelant from this standpoint. Donating $100 Million or not isn't the whole point, it's spreading awareness for what it stands for and the meaning behind it. It may lack credibility to you, but credibility and supporting a reputable cause are two different things, which Product Red takes the latter for obvious reasons over one's persons credibility beliefs, which doesn't dismiss the actual meaning over a color.

Same. Ugh. Looks cheap with the white front.

Combined with not even bothering to replace the silver ring around the TouchID with a corresponding red one, this really is par for the course for Cook's Apple. Lazy, uninspired products from a successful company that went on autopilot.

Product Red has always been red and white theme, with silver. The iPod touch product red has the silver loop band and white face with white apple logo. Like the iPhone with the silver logo and silver ring around the Touch ID.

Can't you just buy the Red chassis part and transplant a Black iPhone into it? Then all that would be wasted is a black chassis, which maybe you could sell online...
