Haha let me re-word that. No one has an excuse NOT TO BUY A PS3.

I actually like the matte finish too. Now I don't have to worry about fingerprints, scratches, etc. ;)

Looks like I'll have to grab another PS3. That'll make 4 PS3s that I have. A 20GB, 60GB, 80GB MGS model, and a slim. Woot. I imagine this'll help blu-ray movie sales as well as well as software sales.

Why do you have so many ps3's?

You do know you can upgrade the hdd yourself right? lol

Haha, I bought my first 20GB PS3 for only $150 off ebay when no one wanted them near launch. :p Bought a 60GB later for another bedroom, and my brother got the 80GB for the downstairs living room. ;) Great blu-ray player BTW.

The engadget photos make it look pretty good.

Shall be pre-ordering to replace my Age-ing 60Giger.

because this makes sense...
That makes no sense to me...

What's so difficult to understand?

It's easier to emulate a PS1 in software. Sony's been doing that since the launch of the PS2. So far, they haven't been able to emulate a PS2 game in software without at least some additional hardware (graphics chip).

The backstory on backward compatibility ...

The original North American models included PS2 compatibility simply because there weren't many PS3 games at the time. Both the 60GB and 20GB models included both the PS2 Emotions Engine and Graphics Synthesizer.

When Sony launched the first European models some five months later, they removed the PS2's Emotion Engine from those models leaving only partial backward compatibility with a combination of software emulation (replacing the Emotion Engine) and hardware with the Graphics Synthesizer.

In Late 2007 with the introduction of new models in all territories, Sony finally removed the Graphics Synthesizer rendering PS2 backward compatibility obsolete from the PS3 line.

It should be noted that within the last year, there have been numerous patents granted to Sony that specify full PS2 software emulation using the Cell chip. Whether Sony chooses to actually ship a future software update the re-enables PS2 compatibility is unknown.

What's so strange to me is that each reiteration of the PS3 seems to have less features.

My old 60 gigger (upgraded to 250GB) has full backwards compatibility, Linux capability, 4 USB ports, a whole slew of card readers and a gigabit ethernet port. All of these things, except for 2 USB ports, have been lost.

This may be the one case where it pays to be an early adopter. ;)

Looks like backward compatibility is done for good.

"GP: This is a question a lot of our readers have had... They're wondering, will the PS3 Slim support Backwards Compatibility?

Koller: No, it won't, actually. Backwards Compatibility plans [are] actually off the table. But, we've noticed [not only] in all of our research, but [also] broadly speaking, we're in our third year now and most of the consumers that purchase the PS3 are purchasing it for PlayStation 3 games. So, those games... we're looking at 80 to 90 percent of consumers purchasing [the system] primarily for PS3 [games]. But, the next-gen intenders that are coming over to purchase the PS3 are purchasing it for the game content that's about to launch, primarily. There's a lot of consumers that are amped up on [forum] boards for Uncharted 2, just like we saw sales increasing from this launch."

Are you guys really willing to hand your money over to MS for something which should have been free in the first place? What kind of a Apple fan are you?

Why should online gaming be free? Cost of servers, IT, bandwidth etc etc.....no, Ill pay for a decent service like XBL. At least I know when my friends are online, what they are playing, can cross game chat, and have a good following for most games online. So far I find gaming on PS3 pretty spotty if the game isn't new. Then again, I ONLY buy Triple A games, so online gaming for me is usually pretty good a couple years later.

I really don't mind if they don't release backwards compatibility later on, HOWEVER, it sure would be a GREAT selling point. I have a slim PS2 modded with a Crystal Chip Pro, Dreamcast, Gamecube with the QOOB, 1 Xbox with SmartXX, Xecuter 3, SmartXXv2 all installed at some time in its life, currenty the X3 is in...with a 400GB HD and 80 games on HD...all owned on pressed discs as well. So...Im set for playing the older games... BUT others may want to consolidate. I just prefer to play using backups. God forbid I use my original Shenmue discs or touch the liner ;-)

Seriously sony, Avatars, animated themes and 3 PSN spots in the XMB are your great idea for FW 3.0? Damn, fire your staff.

On another note, I always buy or rent the 360 version of a game. I hate games being released for multiple consoles. At least the 360 version is usually superior, especially if online is involved.

ALSO, I find myself playing less video games now. Id rather work on my rc race car to hit up the tracks on the weekends. NOTHING beats multiplayer in the real world...nothing. Soon enough Ill have a 96 LT4 Vette to go racing with as well.
I am absolutely disgusted with the teens online trash talking. Been dealing with that for far to long. I really believe that only the owners of the credit cards (for online services) should be able to use the service. Kick the little kids off. 10yr olds shouldn't be smack talking like they do anyway.

Yeah they do. 360 Arcade SKU's are regularly on-sale for under the $200 MSRP, it was just on sale here in Canada for $179.99 with two cheap-o games. Half the price. Yeah they rape you with add-ons later but most people are stupid and don't think that far ahead.

what I think the new $300 price point REALLY exposes is how overpriced the PSP Go! is. For an extra $50 (ie. a game) you can get the bestest graphics and a blu-ray player, huh? Something seems off.

Engadget has posted actual pictures of the Slim including the box.

It looks like the original PS2's matte finish. The slim looks more rugged than the current PS3, which is more like a design piece.

Great link - thanks...

Slimmer, but takes up more space - will be a tight fit where my PS3 is now. Better looking design. Sony should've come out with something like this to start with as it would've made the system cheaper at launch (maybe $399 instead of $499?).

Maybe Sony has learned its lesson for the PS4... :)

Lucky you, you got a fully loaded gaming and web browsing computer for, what, like $600? NICE. :)

looks slick but i do kinda like the glossy of the old and the touch buttons

they should have kept those features imo

Yeah, those are nice high end features...a high end system should have high end features, and the matte finish that the PS3 Slim has reminds me of the old PS2

Haha true about the PSP Go!. I could understand it being $199, but not anymore than that. But then again, portables are always priced pretty high, and give crappier specs than non-portables.

Think of iPhone vs a Mac mini. Similar comparisons can be made for PS3 vs PSP Go!. Different market segments. iPhone without contract is like what? $499/$599? That vs a Mac mini, the cheapest Mac. Pretty much same price. And people are buying up the iPhones! ;)

The question is, which would you get? An iPhone with a contract, or a PS3? That's a damn hard choice...

This one is the same as the current Fat PS3 model, except they removed Linux installs. Not really a deal-breaker anyway, since Linux couldn't take advantage of the Cell/RSX due to the hypervisor.

So Slim is the same as current PS3, except it's got a bigger hard drive. It makes sense to cut costs for features not being used. Sony's is always putting in bunches of features on consoles, only later to remove them. Yes, for backwards compatibility, I agree that should have been left in. We can only hope Sony is implementing PS2 compatibility via emulation due to recent evidence of their patent filings.

Remember the PS1 had the standard RCA outputs, serial port and parallel port? Those slowly got removed with each iteration of the console. It had just the AV Multiout on the PSone. For the PS2, they had the hard drive bay and Firewire ports. Those got removed as well. The PS3, they've removed the card reader, PS2 EE/GS chips, 2 USB ports, SACD, and Linux installations.

Mine is sans upgrade right now, but i feel the same way
