My phone was at 100% charge, I TURNED IT OFF, and in the morning it wouldn’t turn on again. It said the battery was dead. Somehow it drained 100% while turned off. Had to recharge the battery completely up from 0.

Last night, it drained from 57% to 47% while in low power mode and not used at all, in 6 hours, and with zero apps open.
I would get it replaced.

I picked up a similar pattern with my iPhone X. That started recently, say in the last... 4 months-ish... The battery must be tired at less than 80% in the battery health section. But so long as I'm in the city on 4G, it lasts a day (out in the country, it still falls back to old-school cellular and needs charging all day. So I got a cheap battery-case to tide me over.

I'm old AF, set in my bedtime habits. I cable up, read to fall asleep, drop the phone on my face, unwind the cable my wife wrapped around my neck and much to her ongoing disappointment, wake up... to find battery low or dead. I thought power was dropping in the house; nope. Then I checked the cable; tight. Then the brick; voltage steady. Then the daisy-chained extension cords because the house was built when electricity was for fancy-pants city folk; fine.

In the very last month, though, it has steadied out. No more overnight lapses. Occasional charge fails once again attributable to my own goofing. There have been a couple updates to OS 16; no telling what influence that might have had.

So the only logical conclusion is that I was packing powdered Ambien into the charge port and speaker holes... OR Apple deploys code to mildly degrade certain functionality in the lead-up to a new phone release, so people "organically" feel like it's time to buy a new thing. Kidding, kidding 🤣 sorta 🧐. Stupid conspiracy theory 🤪maybe 🤬. Frankly, there's no way anyone could independently prove such a wild outta-left-field allegation - because closed source and DMCA. And the lead-up-f***-o-matic could run where it would never be found, maybe in a little chip that pairs the stupid rear glass to the security chip? Oh, I see you thought of this too... Mmm hmmm....

This is such an odd but fascinating bug. I haven’t had it happen to me yet (14 PM), but it’s shocking how many are affected.

Is there any correlation to Airplane Mode being on overnight or not?

Edit: FWIW, I don’t use AOD or Standby, I charge with MagSafe, and I have Optimized Charging on.

Potentially related—I've had my 15 Pro for almost a month and it still hasn't figured out the Optimized Battery pattern. That is, it charges immediately to 100% and stays there all night, instead of plateauing at 80% until just before I wake up.

Mine figured it out after about two weeks, but last night it went right to 100%. I am not sure, but I think that was because it was around 82% when I plugged it in since I'd had it plugged in while in the car earlier so it was at a much higher % than usual.

Woke up late last week for the first time since the dawn of smart phones because my alarm didn't go off. Hope they can get this fixed quick, I'm enjoying the nighttime mode.

If your iPhone powers itself off for several hours at night, well, I guess this is just Extra-Clean Energy Charging? Mother Nature will thank you, even if your boss who sees you coming into work late will not. :p

Not happening on my 14 pro…

… But what IS driving me nuts is the AirPod mute dialog alert.

Not every time, but definitely every day, i put in my headphones, it takes over the screen and nothing will work until i hit the continue button ( clicking open space doesnt work)… super frustrating multiple times a day for weeks now.

Apple should hold off releasing iOS 17.1 until this bug is fixed.

They can´t, because of the French laws regarding radiation. IOS 17.1 will be released next Tuesday, as informed by the French authorities a few days ago.

Has anyone tried turning off optimized battery charging to see if that fixes the issue?

….And I’m still convinced that the optimized charging actually makes the battery life deplete at a faster rate than charging to 100% immediately.

Interesting bugs. I wonder why it only affects certain people. Mine is on the group "it's just work" so I don't really care about this news. But hey, not commenting just doesn't feel right.
I have never had it happen. 15 pm

iOS 17 has been nothing short of a disaster.

Honestly, it's been kind of a "nothing" release for me. Didn't change anything significantly, didn't do anything new, and didn't cause any new problems. The only mild annoyance was adding a picture to a message, no idea why they made the UI worse there, but it's not much worse.

Also didn't fix anything. Mail still sucks, calendar sync is still occasionally flaky, voicemail is still sometimes screwy.

Might have been worse if I had a newer iPhone, but I don't. I'm still annoyed that the 6s+ isn't getting updates any more, it's the best iPhone Apple ever released - actually pushable home button and headphone jack.

Jesus Christ. Prehistoric?. Maybe it´s because I´m 54 years old, but I see it differently.

I used my Iphone 5S from 2013 until 2020, when I changed it for a brand new second gen Iphone SE. I changed my Ipad Air, bought in 2013, in 2020, for a brand new base model Ipad. And I am still using my 21.5 inch Late 2012 iMac, albeit with Sonoma installed thanks to Open Core Patcher.

I love Apple products, but I´m not wealthy. Their longtime software support (many many years), no doubt helps.
I'm with you, here... The X is fast enough. Screen is awesome. I do like phone cams for the occasional lucky snapshot and visual note-taking; but for my planned photography I have a grown-up camera that spanks a 15 ProSuperMaxUltra all night, sends it home bruised and bleeding in the morning. I don't game on phones, or at all, actually.

I have access to all the phones as part of my cyber work. Lately, I see some value in newer AI machiney learnamous features, like OCRing photos of labels and signs, translation. Dovetails with some new work in AWS Machine Learning services. But I'm glad I waited past the 15 hype.

This happens about every 5 days for me. 13 Pro Max on 17.0.3

Mine shuts off completely until I wake up. Usually around 1am.

Never realized this is what’s going on. But yeah. iPhone 15 Pro Max and it happens nearly every night. I’m on Beta 17.1. I have the update for 17.1 pending but guess it’s not going to matter for this issue.

I hate this kind of argument. Much like when Windows would turn on "turn device off to save energy" or "reduce carbon footprint." Good lord.... tell me how many trees I need to plant outside so I can use my computer without having to crank it on the side.
Might be a decent feature if you could set a time for power on and alarm. Although still like someone else said no call which are most likely emergencies in the middle of the night

What a tone deaf comment. Before mobile phones everyone had land lines that were on 24/7.
And I'm sure people survive much better with cells. When I was a kid and we learned about CPR they said get help but what if you aren't near another human other than the victim? At least now you can use your cell and even more recently you have satellite calling

Ok. So I guess I’m reading that 17.1 isn’t actually live yet? My bad. Must be the RC? I wasn’t sure because the update didn’t say beta update like it usually does. Anyway. Hope they fix it soon. I haven’t had issues with not being on for my alarms, so that’s good. But something that’s not Apple’s fault is me just snoozing or turning them off…
