Not for me. Restored from an encrypted backup in iTunes (not iCloud) and I first had to set up the X as new, then update to 11.1, then I was able to restore.

That's exactly what I had to do. I got an alert saying that the software on the X was older so it wouldn't let me restore from my encrypted backup. So I updated the X to 11.1 and then restored after initially setting it up as new. it took almost two hours to get all my apps and everything else set up. it seems like there ought to be an easier way to move everything over to a new iPhone.

So if I remove the beta profile, then download the restore file install it and then how do I get that to load everything i had back in my phone under 11.1 because when i do the steps on 11.1 and hit restore from backup my 11.2 is greyed out which has everything I want on the new phone.

It's a feature.

Kidding aside, does anyone know how to downgrade back to iOS 9.3.5? That was the last time I actually enjoyed using my 6S.

I never restore a new device from backup and I bet the beta 2 that supports iPhone X will be out early next week

I “updated” to 11.1 in iTunes, backed up and restored to my X without any issues. Seems to the way forward at the moment at least while Apple allow “upgrading” to 11.1

Explain “updated” and “upgrading.”

Lol, surprise! you've lost everything.

Enjoy your new phone!

(you do have another backup, right? sure hope so -Tim)

What's not known about this? Those who install betas are told to create a backup before so that it could be used if needed. They are also told not to do it on their primary devices. All of these types of things are known.
most of us, if not all do have backups. As a developer we (at least) myself backup regularly. All I'm saying is it would have been nice if Apple said something, so that we could prep our phones prior. A week old backup my not be okay for most. There is a work around but its just hours wasted that could of been avoided if they would have given some noticed. My fuss has zero to do with backups, and more to do with letting your developer community know

What in the world are you going on about? We haven't lost a single thing. As soon as Apple releases the X version of 11.2 beta (which may even be today), developers will be able to update and then restore their backups.

Nothing is lost.

My suggestion would be to download 11.1 IPSW and while holding Option key (IIRC), click update. It should let you “update” to 11.1. I did it a few times myself.

Will downloading from ios 11.2 to 11.1 delete data eg health data on the phone?

Doh !!!

Thats me, ...iPhone 7 under Beta v11.2 (15C5092b)
though my X won't arrive till this coming Monday.

I just might do a fresh, as new install

My iPhone 7 has software/updates, going back ~10 years

I think I'm going to do a fresh install with the X. I always do restores.... it's probably time for me to clear out all the junk that comes over with each restore.

You claim to be a developer. You should be smarter than you're acting and know how this works. You should have noted the fact that there was no beta for X released (I certainly did). This has happened in the past too.

But then again, you agreed to the developer agreement which CLEARLY states not to run it on your personal device and only install betas on a test device. You then agree to those terms when you install the beta profile and again when you install the beta.

So you've stated numerous times that you understand the risks and now you're on MacRumors saying you didn't understand the risks?

They did let developers know. They say don't install beta on non developer devices. A dev device shouldn't matter if you can restore a backup or not. If you choose to ignore that, as I do as well, then you just have to deal with the work arounds. I and many others knowingly didn't install the new beta.

What if you manually back up and restore from itunes instead of icloud, would that work?

No. The backup made with iTunes will still be 11.2 which is too new to install on the X.

You would have to downgrade your old phone, make a backup, then setup the X and restore the backup which is from a version of the OS that matches that on your X.

Is that really true? So what is the recommended course of action for those of us that get our devices today in that position?
My guess from experience would be to downgrade your iOS to a current public version and make a backup of it. Or just start over from scratch.

It'd be nice if Apple raised the price of developer membership or added some other requirement to keep non-developers out of the program.

It's obvious that the countless folks that signup just for beta access have no understanding what BETA means and what goes with accepting the terms of the agreement.

Yeah. Nothing is LOST. It’s just inconvenient.

that has nothing to do with it... who's to say that the iPhone X i purchased is not for development use? All I am saying is that they should of said something about it prior. Its not a big deal to me, I have multiple iPhones and backups. But, its just a time waster... I do feel sorry for the public beta tester that probably do not have multiple devices or the knowledge on how to restore.

Argh, this just got me too. And half an hour on Apple support didn’t help as the guys there didn’t know anything about beta software. Double frustration as I’d asked specifically in store before trading my iPhone 7plus in. I had considered getting out of the upgrade program and paying off the residue on the finance and then selling the 7plus. If I’d known that I’d have restore problems would definitely taken that route. Hey ho, lesson learned. The fact it took the folks in the store 3 goes to find out if I’d be able to restore despite being on beta 11.2 and getting it wrong is a frustration tho

There’s a free public beta program that’s aimed at everyday users who want to try out new features. It’s not exclusively for developers on testing devices like it was in the past.

They want as many devs as possible. I’m not developing anymore, but I keep my dev account. I understand how it works, though. I figure I can either do a fresh install now or an install from a backup last week.

Minor inconvenience. Nothing Earth shattering.

Yep I ran into this. Had to back up from an older backup. Store employees didn’t know about it, had to research.
