So if i currently have 11.1 on my 7+ do i still need to update the X to 11.1 before I restore from my encrypted backup or will iTunes upgrade my X to 11.1 and restore at the same time? I thought i needed to update the X to 11.1 first, but the article seems to say i don't.

Come some one walk us through how to download and install OS11.1 ? Where do I find the info ?

You can download the iOS 11.1 IPSW at https://ipsw.me/. Once you have it downloaded, connect your current phone to your computer. Open itunes, select your iphone in itunes. Hold the option key on your keyboard while clicking "check for update". Select the 11.1 ipsw you downloaded and it will install. Nothing will be lost on your phone.

Once it's installed, make sure everything is as it should be. Then perform an icloud backup. You will likely receive an error message stating that the icloud backup can't be completed because icloud has a newer backup. Go to Settings > tap your name > icloud > manage storage > backup > choose your iphone > delete backup. That will delete the 11.2 beta backup that is in icloud. Then go back to perform a full 11.1 icloud backup which you can then restore from on your iphone x.

If you're on iOS 11.2, you can download iOS 11.1 and do an "update" to 11.1. Once you "update" to 11.1, do a back up, and then restore.

Does this update not wipe the iPhone? I assumed it did because it sees it as a downgrade.

Thanks. I havd the IPSW for 11.1. I just never had to step back on a personal device and I wasn’t in the mood to lose all my files.

Be patient! Do not try the IPSW method!
I highly suggest to anyone who is on the beta and unable to restore a backup onto their new phone wait until the end of the weekend to try other methods such as trying to restore the old phone through an IPSW and then backing up. People are having problems with this method and if you try this you will likely lose some data. After contacting developer support they alerted me and various other people that they know of the issue and are working to address it for beta testers. If you are on the beta, backup your phone and remain patient for 2 or so days. I say this as I tried and lost some data during the process, others have lost more! Luckily I had a backup of 11.2 so if you must then backup your phone before doing so.

There is a workaround for beta users who only have a backup of 11.2 beta 1. I just did it and can confirm it works. Go to the backup location on your pc and locate the info.plist file. Open in notepad and search for "11.2". Simply change that to 11.1 and save the file and then reopen itunes (if you had it open while you made the change it will not work.. you have to close it and reopen). It is only located in the plist file one time. It will restore with no issues and restart.

You're welcome :)

You won't lose anything. If you're paranoid about it, just do an itunes backup before you downgrade to 11.1

EDIT: I am seeing that some folks with older iphones are having issues with downgrading to 11.1 so do it at your own risk. I was able to downgrade successfully on an 8+

Ridiculous oversight by Apple. I'm glad I did a manual monthly backup of 11.1 about two weeks ago.

Here's what I have done so far. I think you advice is good.

1) I backed up my phone to the computer using iTunes (11.2 beta.) I archived it.
2) I "updated" to 11.1 as described above.
3) The phone came back up and everything seems to sync via icloud... (and document data and messages came back and iCloud photo library is repopulating AND Apple Watch is working still, though it's on 4.2 beta).

The only issue? Health is borked. Though I had icloud sync on for Health it is stuck just pinwheeling, even after rebooting. I don't know if it's parsing the years worth of data in the background from icloud or what. I don't think this data is even stored in the backup file anymore.

so. um.

I intend to restore from my 11.2 backup after the beta for the X is released. Hopefully that'll fix it. Or overnight it will just fix itself. We'll see....

Developers and public beta testers who installed the iOS 11.2 beta on their devices earlier this week will be disappointed to learn that there's no iOS 11.2 beta for the iPhone X as of yet, and therefore no way to restore from an existing iOS 11.2 backup on a new iPhone X.

If you're running iOS 11.2 on your existing iPhone and create an iCloud backup, that backup is not going to be compatible with the iPhone X.

New iPhone X owners who want to restore from a backup will need to wait for Apple to release a version of iOS 11.2 for the iPhone X or downgrade back down to iOS 11.1.

It's not entirely clear when Apple plans to release a beta of iOS 11.2 for the iPhone X.

It could happen today now that the iPhone X is out in the wild and there are customers who can't restore, but Apple could also choose to wait until it's time for the second beta to be released, which means public beta testers and developers will be left over the weekend without a restore option.

The other alternative to restoring is to set a device up as new, but that requires re-downloading all apps and re-entering a lot of information, which is a time consuming process.

Out of the box, iPhone X models appear to have iOS 11.0.1 installed, so the iOS 11.1 update will need to be installed over-the-air or via iTunes after opening it up. When restoring from an iOS 11.1 backup onto an iPhone X, it appears the iOS 11.1 update will be installed on the device automatically.

Piece of cake...goes fast and easy, just backup after the down grade to 11.1...I did it as an upgrade (option check upgrade) no need to restore...

Interesting read....but what funkniess will one possibly expect restoring a 11.2 to a 11.1 IOS....with the plist workaround that allows as such ?

I haven't noticed anything funky as of yet. If anything is wonky, I will just change the plist back to 11.2 when the beta for the X is released and re-restore. But so far so good.

confirmed it works, THX!!!

It'd be nice if Apple raised the price of developer membership or added some other requirement to keep non-developers out of the program.

It's obvious that the countless folks that signup just for beta access have no understanding what BETA means and what goes with accepting the terms of the agreement.
Listen I have been a beta tester for over 30 years. I understand very well what beta means. I also understand that you must communicate with your testers and developers. Apple did not. That is a fact and all of you who want to point fingers and act all superior need to try to understand the situation of others. Let's try a bit of empathy shall we. Jees I hope all of you are as hard on those who break the traffic laws in your community as you are on us who have not followed the Apple beta rules to the letter.

I can say this is working for me, I updated my iPhone X (after setting up as new device). Then it allowed me to restore from my old phones 11.1 backup. It's restoring as we speak.

Update the iPhone X after setting it up as new then plug it in and restore your backup.

Much ado about nothing. But then, that is the embodiment of the Macrumors sites we love so much.

Dude the issue is with people who backed up with the 11.2 public beta

do exactly what jaw3net posted "Download the 11.1 IPSW. Install it on your current (non X) device with iTunes (Option Click Check for Upgrade). Backup your current device, either icloud or itunes. Restore from backup on your X."

Man... I just about panicked when I read this story! My iPhone X is on a delivery vehicle right now, and upon reading this, I promptly checked the version of iOS on my current iPhone 6. I've been routinely updating to the public betas, but fortunately, I somehow hadn't gotten around to updating to the 11.2 beta quite yet; the download is quietly sitting on "paused", waiting for me to connect to WiFi. I guess I won't be doing that update, just now.

(Whew!)

yeah public beta people are pretty much screwed unless they can get a clean 11.1 download directly from apple. I would hope they don't download some random copy from the net

Just a note - so far on my downgraded to 11.1 iPhone 8 Plus, the health data is gone. It's stuck pinwheeling. I assume it's in iCloud (in iOS 11 it syncs), or in the encrypted iOS 11.2 backup I made. That full backup SHOULD have saved it.

I'll try the restore by changing plist method tonight when I get the X.
