However this fifth-gen is not for me now... I generally have last gen iPad and prev gen iPhone, for money saving and even because i think its stupid to get an iPhone faster and better than iPad, so i'll buy before summer the iPad 2 and an after market iPhone 4. Last gen iPhone is for iPhone-only buyers! I'm from Italy, here we use to buy free of contracts phones, i usually use 10€ of prepaid traffic a month!

I just wish Apple would drop all these number names.. just call it an iPhone.. I have never heard them refer to MBP as MBP 8, etc. iPhone 5 and iPad 2 just doesn't sound that sexy!!!

Would not be too surprising if the iPhone 5 is similar to the iPhone 4 in many ways. Conventional wisdom now says that the big future change will be the 2012 iPhone 6 with LTE. If you want to make a statement by changing the form factor, that would be the time.

Yes, the larger screen will help (I think the Retina makes things way too small on the current iPhone 4).

The iPhone 6 with LTE will be perfect timing - I think Apple will wait until after the Sprint/T-Mobile merger (and Sprint will be LTE)... ;)

1st Generation: iPhone
2nd Generation: iPhone 3G
3rd Generation: iPhone 3Gs
4th Generation: iPhone 4
5th Generation: iPhone?

Fixed.

The actual product is called iPhone, iPad, etc. The number is for telling what version it is.

You know, like Mac OS X.

Once again "Full of Win", you are completely wrong. You seem to have a real problem understanding what a new generation of device means. In your world, it needs to meet some magical criteria that only you can decide if it's worthy. Back here in the real world, it has to do with what Apple actually designs and releases as a new product. You spouted this same garbage about the iPad 2 being an "iPad 1.5" (which is ironic because the ipad 2 is technically a bigger redesign/upgrade than iphone 3G was to the 3Gs )

Why do you guys think Apple should innovate for only the iphone4 users on 2 year contracts that fall on 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 etc only? Just so you as a group of Apple consumers won't be upset when the next generation comes out?
Probably because it's all they can do to afford one every two years.

It will give Android an advantage as they continue to innovate.

And best of all we won't have to listen to "this changes everything" crap again.

There won't be anything to temp us, except some new Androids. We can take a break from the iPhone!

Perfect.

There is always a debate of whether the next iPhone will be a major or minor update. I don't know, I consider every one a major update. Minor updates being software updates that add new features. Some iPhones support the new features, some don't. Just my opinion.

Looking at previous devices in terms of the hardware

3G Major update
3GS Minor update
4 Major update
4????? Likely to be minor in my view.

The cases don't support a major refresh argument. I'd love a major, but seriously doubt it.

You really think they will call the fifth iPhone an iPhone 4something? The only reason why they did that with the 3GS is because it was actually the third iPhone and it would have been weird to call it the iPhone 3 when the last one was the iPhone 3G.

But then many consider 3G a minor and 3GS major. It seems more like the one that the individual owns is the major update. It is all simply opinion. Then there are the people that just buy every one.

I love how the people's opinions on future products reflect what they currently have. I upgrade every year so it doesn't matter to me :)

Question: If the new iPhone has a slightly larger screen, what will the resolution be? Would developers have to redo their apps again?

I've heard from someone who knows some person who is testing the iphone 5 prototype. he has one with a keyboard on it. It is likely the keyboard will not be present on the iphone 5 when it get launched.

So, the Iphone 5 without the keyboard is going to be:
Same design as the iphone 4 but it is some millimeters thinner, new antenna design; the three antenna's will be placed in the top right corner instead on the bottom like the iphone 4.

And of course: A next generation chipset.

No words on a bigger screen.

Yes, the larger screen will help (I think the Retina makes things way too small on the current iPhone 4).

I was wondering about the screen too. Back of the envelope calculations suggest that the screen can be increased in size without the need for reducing the "retina" categorization. This assumes the same dimensions of the phone surface. Check it:
Current dimensions of screen = 7.6 by 5.1 mm, or 38.76 mm^2. If we squeeze 3 mm in width and 5 mm in height (realistic given current layout of home button and speaker/camera) then the new dimensions would be 8.1 by 5.4 mm, or 43.74 mm^2. This is only a 12.8% increase in screen size.
Now, "retina" explained on pcworld http://www.pcworld.com/article/198201/iphone_4s_retina_display_explained.html suggests that anything above 300 ppi is not really perceivable. Current iP4 is 326ppi, so dropping to 300 is an 8.66% decrease, more than my above calculation.

I bet the screen size increases by roughly 10% with no change in resolution and no need for redoing apps for the slight change in resolution. After all, we can just hold the phone 10% farther from our face and the difference will be imperceptible.

But then many consider 3G a minor and 3GS major. It seems more like the one that the individual owns is the major update. It is all simply opinion. Then there are the people that just buy every one.

Based on how the hardware looks, 3GS was minor. All that changed was a little 'S' put on the back.

iPhone 4 was big, completely new design. Next iPhone will look similar to iPhone 4. Those that don't know there stuff will never notice the difference.

The iPhone after that I predict will be a new design. Also hopefully it will have the contactless payment technology in it aswell.

Surely this wont actually be called the iPhone 5 for production, it'll be the iPhone4 or something similar keeping the '4' in the mix.

If you think about it, we've got:

iPhone 1
iPhone 2 (aka iPhone 3g)
iPhone 3 (aka iPhone 3gs)
iPhone 4

Logic would dictate that the yearly refresh goes as follows:
2010: Major (iP4)
2011: Minor (iP4S)
2012: Major (iP5)
2013: Minor (iP5S)
etc

If a major refresh was done every year it'd mean the iPhone has a very short lifespan left...theres only so much you can do in a year and it'd just end up becoming a very disappointing product.

Logic does not dictate 2012 to be the year of iPhone5. We've got:

iPhone 1 (aka original iPhone)
iPhone 2 (aka iPhone 3g)
iPhone 3 (aka iPhone 3gs)
iPhone 4 (iPhone 4)
iPhone 5 (???)
iPhone 6 (???)
iPhone 7 (???)
...

I think next iPhone will be called iPhone 5, if not iPhone 4S. The 2012 iPhone should be iPhone 6, not 5.

Same form factor and larger screen, or smaller form factor and same screen size? These cases don't really have any scale to them so either would be possible. The latter would be interesting, even preferable in my opinion.

iPhone 4G

Also, the term iPhone 4G would make so much sense if the next model has LTE.

I've kinda given up caring about the next iPhone revision - I still have 3GS as I did not like the i-P4 and if the i-P5 is similar, then I wont be getting that either!

For me it comes down to what features will I use and how will I benefit and there were none for me to make the switch from i-P3GS to i-P4.

I had the 3GS and then went to Android and now I have an iPhone 4. Trust me, once you hold it in your hand, you understand how beautiful it is. It just feels dense, and professional, and... well, gorgeous haha.
I support this move by Apple :p

I predict iPhone 5 sales will be 5 million in the first 4 days.

I predict long lines and shortages due to the "amazing demand" that will be even higher than Apple anticipated

These cases clearly have rounded edges on the backside + they arent bumpers.

if anything, these cases hint to a design similar to iPad2 but with less sharp curves around the edge. More similar to the powerbook. Metal (liquid?) back seems nearly certain if this case is correct.

why does nobody _look_ at the image

Exactly! I thought the same thing, the insides of these cases are rounded, not square, so if anything the only thing identical to the iPhone 4 is the camera placement.

Personally, I don't think people pay attention to much of anything anymore these days..

I was wrong about screen size

I used to disparage people who wants a larger screen like that seen in the Droid X, but having use the iPhone for the last several months: I must admit that on a few apps the iPhone could use a larger screen. A 4 inch screen is probably ideal. However, I'm also torn still with this idea. A 3.5 inch iPhone is easier to carry in your pocket than say the Galaxy S which is a bit too bulky.
