Last time I checked a phone isn’t required to be running the latest software in order for it to work. Not being able to run iOS 13 won’t brick anyone’s phone.

While this is very true, it does not account for them refusing to fix any hardware issues AND preventing third parties from doing same.

I’m sure it’s absolutely true because only truly foolish and ignorant people like me ever buy anything made by Apple. All the smart people know that Apple is a total ripoff. And tell us so incessantly.

YES, THANK YOU. so tired of all the updates and new 'features" I never wanted. Love my SE and will keep for as long as I can.

A questionable and unconfirmed rumor from Israeli site The Verifier suggests that Apple's iOS 13 update, expected to be previewed this summer at the Worldwide Developers Conference, will drop support for a number of iPhones and iPads.

The site says iOS 13 will be unavailable on the iPhone 5s, iPhone SE, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6s Plus, all devices that are compatible with iOS 12.

As for iPads, The Verifier believes Apple will drop support for the iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, and possibly the iPad mini 4. The sixth-generation iPod touch is listed as a device that will also be incompatible with iOS 13.

If this rumor is true, and we don't know that it is because The Verifier did not provide details on where the information is from or how it was obtained, it would see Apple dropping support for three generations of iPhones at one time, a move that seems somewhat unlikely.

Apple aims to provide software updates for its iOS devices for as long as possible. Both iOS 12 and iOS 11 offered support for the iPhone 5s and newer, the iPad mini 2 and newer, and the iPad Air and newer. At the time iOS 12 launched, some of those devices were five years old.

Dropping support for everything up to the iPhone 7 would leave iOS 13 compatible only with iOS devices from 2016 or later. Two of those devices, the iPad mini 4 and the sixth-generation iPod touch, are current-generation devices, though they may not be by the time iOS 13 launches as updates for both are in the works.

To cast further doubt on the site's claims, it lists the iPhone 6s as a device that won't support iOS 13 without naming the fifth-generation iPad. Both the fifth-generation iPad and the iPhone 6s use the A9 chip.

The Verifier claims that in addition to dropping support for iOS 13 on a wide swath of devices, Apple will also restrict some iOS 13 features to newer models to "make as many users upgrade to the latest models of iPhones." While it's true there are sometimes iOS features limited to newer devices because of hardware limitations, Apple has a long history of supporting older devices for years after launch.

The Verifier has previously provided semi-accurate info on Apple's plans. In 2017, for example, the site said Apple would bring Group FaceTime to iOS 11. We did get Group FaceTime, but not until iOS 12.1 in 2018.

This rumour doesn't make any sense. Apple has been supporting the 5S for 5 years and suddenly, they would drop 3 generations?
I can perfectly understand Apple dropping 5S and 6 and equivalent iPad due to the 1GB RAM limitation but the 6S absolutely not. This device was on sale directly from Apple until last September, you can still get it from most telecom operators and it has 2Gb of RAM.

and yet you follow and post about Apple products? Interesting. Do you work for Google? I bet you do, that or the virus OS.

I can really believe this.

I don't think that the extra effort put into performance and backwards compatibility for iOS 12 was an accident.

iOS 12 very much feels like the last 'classic' version of iOS and one where your classic phone will continue to perform well for years.

I suspect though that iOS 13 will be quite a dramatic departure from what we've previously had so far - I suspect that it's going to be animation and transition heavy - and I'd imagine that fast phones will be needed for it.

And as many have said, it'll make quite a few people think of upgrading if suddenly their phone feels stale and old...

The rumor is BS. Simple Reason, which is not listed in the article:
iPhone 6S/SE -> A9. 1st iPad Pro -> A9X.
Got that? ;)
And for that reason alone I question the 6s/SE and 1st gen. iPad Pro getting the axe.
The 12.9 in. Pro is still a very powerful tablet with 4GB of RAM, I don't understand what kind of features and improvements could Apple have in store that would saturate the potential of this device. A device who's potential isn't even fully utilized today - let's face it iOS doesn't use what even the first gen. has to offer in terms of hardware and screen real estate.

Having my 2-year-old iPhone SE dropped from support for iOS 13 would be sort of nice...at least it would stop interrupting me to upgrade every time an update comes out!

And, unless Apple brings back a smaller phone, I'll be sticking with my iPhone SE until it's dead.

Such brittle nerves and bitter hearts...to take this story as gospel and start pulling out the pitchforks and torches.

We have five (5) months before an iOS 13 announcement and the first beta is even available to developers, but some of you are so hell bent on hating Apple that you will believe the first rumor that gives you an excuse. Have you ever heard of critical thinking skills?

When Apple released iOS 12, they gave 5s owners a surprise lifeline and iPhone 6/6 Plus owners practically a new device...for free. Hopefully, Apple can continue to support the A7 and A8, however I think it is realistic to expect that Apple will discontinue support for any device powered by the A7, more due to the GPU than the CPU. I supposed the A8 could suffer the same fate, but more than likely both the A8 and A9 will be supported for at least one more iOS release.

Those of us still using an iPhone 5s, iPad Air, iPad mini 2 or mini 3 should prepare ourselves accordingly. I did that last year, but got a very pleasant surprise. However, I knew it was only a stay of execution.

I find it ironic that the users howling about this possibility of device support being cut will also be the very same to decry Apple's lack of innovation if they do continue to support them. I have read such words on this very forum.

If you hate Apple so much, or are so bitter toward them and Tim Cook, I am sure that you will be warmly embraced by Android. Please, do not let the door hit you on the @$$ on the way out.

What you're suggesting is just visual bells and whistles, whereas I'd expect real features to reflect the need to shun two generations of devices.
Multitask on the iPad may get an overhaul, file management too, but what else? What would be so resorce intensive as to cut off so many devices?
There isn't that much of a difference between the desktop interface on my Mac compared to my iPhone or iPad Pro.
Similar animations, transparency etc.
The only real difference being the ability to place multiple windows on multiple desktops in Spaces.

As long as phone is 64 bit, why drop support for them? Is iOS 13 really going to bring some game changers that will tax the hardware of these older devices?

We all knew this was coming. iOS 12 was a gesture of good will to calm down the masses. iOS 13 will be business as usual- kill off the old stuff to drive sales of the new stuff.

iPhone 7 is sitting on shakey ground too. I'd avoid buying one of those at this time also.

I’m all for it. You HAVE TO cut off legacy support or else you become Windows type boat ware.
