You paid $5 and you get a program that is good enough to cover that. Folks spending 2 hours to edit video on their phone need something a little more advanced than a video editing tool from the app store.

Shift it over to your computer and edit it like a normal person.

What are you talking about? I had a hell of a time trying to export a 3 minute video clip. Not like I'm to produce a full leangth movie. Also, I paid 5 dollars for VERY basic features, not for short movies. Where I choose to edit my video is my business. If I want to edit what was shot on my phone, from my phone, then I will, as I have good eyes and looking at a small screen doesn't bother me one bit. Not like it'd labor intensive anyway. Bottom line, it has bugs and doesn't work like it's supposed to.

Let me explain why I'm mad over a stupid $5 app okay?

This is a snow ball effect for ME. I am tired of it.

  • iPad wifi problem- apples response? No update in almost 3 months
  • iPhone 4 reception issue- your holding it wrong. Oh we will fix how many bars are displayed in an update.
  • iPhone 4 proximity issue- no response on this one yet.
  • iPhone glass durability- buy a case...
  • IPhone 4, iMovie- can't include 10+ pics, don't include them, export in a lower resolution.

So people say, " hey what are you complaining about, apple will update their app. " Will they? How do you know that? They sure as hell have not released a critical update to fix the wifi problem on the iPad. They have not stated they will fix it. As a customer, how am I supposed to know? People say, " why would you want to have more than 10 pics in your video? " Why not? When I found out about this issue, I was reading about people that couldn't export a 45 sec clip that was just pics, not videos. Some people just want to use pictures instead of videos. Apple has not changed the description on their app to implying restrictions. Their keynote showcasing iPhone 4 iMovie didn't indicate any restrictions.

It seems apples stance has gone from " think different " to " use different ". I like to buy products that work for me, not products that I have to work for. Why doesn't the iPhone 4 just work? I'm ok with not having flash to an extent, but I'm not ok with not having functionality from advertised functions. I called apple's facetime line the other day and facetime failed to work. It took 45 minutes of the apple rep passing me to a senior rep to somehow reactivate my facetime through text message. Yes, the rep had to reactivate my facetime by SMS. Makes no sense to me, but neither does the ultra strong glass advertised that has got scratched by a piece of plastic in my pocket.

Hell even a cheap " hurry, let's get more phones out " company like HTC has quickly fixed the glass seating problems in the EVO.

Oh and by the way since I'm a " whiner ", will go ahead and mention the other problems in iMovie I didn't complain about. Why did it take me so long to edit?

Other problems:

  • Images don't show fully- yes if you want to include a photo you have to edit the pic to zoom in and out to show the whole pic as it gets cropped.
  • The screen goes to sleep- when your playing back your movie to make sure it looks like the way you wanted, your phone will try to go to sleep at the normal time you have set in settings.
  • Only one music track- you can only have one music track per project...
  • Theme music- if you use the theme music instead of a song, it cuts off around a minute or so, then there is no music.
  • Music plays when track is done- your movie is 4 minutes and the song is 3? When you go to play any part of the movie to check your editing while in the project, the end of whatever song you used will play again even though it ended earlier in your project.
  • Freezes- at around the 3 minute mark or so, it get unbearable to remove images. There can be a 30 second lag to remove images. Tested on two phones.
  • Sleep error freeze- if your screen starts to dull to go to sleep, you touch the screen, there project will quit playing and freeze for a few seconds. For god sakes don't touch the screen twice to keep it from going to sleep....

That's just some of the problems I ran into that I overlooked until I ran into this problem exporting. There are more bugs, but those are just off the top of my head. Its frustrating because like the antenna problem, you would think some of these would have been caught in testing.

all of you idiots complaining about the OP detailing his experience with iMovie need to get over yourselves. you all praised this new great experience when it was announced but now that it doesnt work you dismiss it as a needless feature anyway. this is like all the liberals who hated Bush and his policies saying they were terrible but yet when Obama came in and had basically the same policies as Bush they all thought they were genius. believe it or not Apple isnt God.

Apple does NO WRONG! Have we not learned that yet?

1 - Apple does no wrong.
2 - Apple leaves out a feature, it's not needed! Don't ask for it.
3 - Apple adds left out feature, it's MAGICAL, REVOLUTIONARY and NEW!
4 - Apple doesn't work for you, YOU work for Apple!
5 - If something doesn't work, BUY something else from Apple to fix it!
6 - Apple moves at a glacial pace, if they move at all. You want to slap them like that glass bottle of ketchup to hurry it along.

Anyways, OP has valid points as usual. Like most threads that complain of Apple induced issues. The fan boys come in and raze the place because "GASP" ALL APPLE PRODUCTS WORK! He must be LYING! Deal with it!

Mods, please PLEASE get this place under control. It was a decent place. Now it's overrun with pre-pubescent whiners. It's a forum, we are ALLOWED to post our grievances with products/software/services. Is that not why these forums are here?

Please - clean house or put some of these people on a leash already!

The dude has a point. These forums are about apple products. People expressing opinions about products, negative or positive, is kind of the point.

And Apple has dropped the ball here and there recently. I mean, these are premium priced products, customers should get premium customer service and fixes.

Since you're so unhappy with the product, that the ***** thing back and be done with it. It' simply really.

Wrong! I'm not unhappy with the product, I'm unhappy with the support.

Look, I think the iPhone 4 is the best phone out there, bottom line. Companies screw up and things happen. I like a lot of things about the iPhone 4. What I dont like is the recent lack of accountability and/or support. You say they will fix it, I'm more inclined to say prove it. They have not fixed the iPad wifi problem they said they would fix with an update, have they? I also don't like their first response which was to deny any problems. Calling their support lines offered such resolutions as, " try taping it. "

Apple does an amazing job designing their products and yes they push the limits. I like that, but when there are bugs, which there'd always will be, they should be Johnny on the spot.

Maybe they should think about designing a product and having said product assembled right here in America. I would pay $50 more for an iphone to have it made here. Give more jobs to Americans and probably we wouldn't see all these yellow screen defects etc. Worked for krispy kreme. ;)

I'm in the Marines and in all honesty, America hasn't made a decent product in decades. Why do you think Toyota and all these foriegn car companies are doing so well? Ford and GM haven't made a car worth anything in decades. If you want the iPhone made in America you can expect to pay a lot more for the phone. Now with Obama taxing everyone no company in their right mind would want to stay here and make products. They'll be charged out of the a$$ if the carbon tax goes thru and who will pick up that bill? The consumer so your $199 phone just became $299 while the $299 became $399.

Just when you thought this thread couldn't get any more whiny, enter jingoism.

Sorry, but I don't think it is ultra patriotic to say that products assembled in America are normally higher quality. I also think it wouldn't be bad for all of the people unemployed here. We don't over work our workers to the point that fox con does. We also tend to care more and focus more on the quality of somethings build.

Tbh, almost any country would be better for building the iPhone than china. China is good at making things fast and cheap, that's about it.

Hate to kill your thought there but most toyotas etc are built here in good ole USA. They ship the parts to us. I would rather pay $100 extra for something I know will have passed through various quality controls and employ 25k-50k Americans. Why? For $100 I can get a good iPhone 4 and maybe a job if I need it.

Like I was saying above, a product doesn't have to be made in America to be good. With that said, you can hardly expect things made in china to be of high quality build. The work conditions and overall culture there regarding production is horrible. I try my best to avoid anything made in china, especially food items.

Touche sir. Well the overall point I was attempting to make was that its nieve to think that just because iPhone would be made in America somehow it would be superior and better to the one made in China. I think we can all agree that products made in America now arent of the same quality as they were back in the day and you can see that in new cars by Ford/GM. Old 50s 60s cars are still running to this day with no problems but newer cars youll be lucky to have for 15-20 years now. Quality has gone down and I believe it is due to the policies this country has. If we enact carbon taxes companies arent going to pay for that, we are. At the end of the day America is a great country but our policies are crap and our products are getting there, I cant think of anything that is truly "Made in USA" anymore and theres valid reasons for that.

Well, the quality of "foreign" cars have gone down since they have started making more over here, IMHO. I haven't looked through consumer reports from then and now. But I'm fairly certain that I would be right.

If it makes you feel any better i made a 5-minute 32-second video that also contained about 15 pics that didnt crash on export in full resolution. And all the media was from the iphone 4. Just so you know the phone IS capable of exporting. Im sure with an imovie update youll be good to go. This is the first version of ios 4 and a brand new phone, there are going to be bugs and just relax and they will be fixed in time. What did you do before you had an iphone to do all of this?

@rooftop_voter: i hope youre joking... The quality of foreign cars today i much better than say, 20-25 years ago! Would you really rather have some death-trap heap of crap than a nice solidly built car today? Look at old civics for example, i wouldnt be caught dead in one of those. If you got in am accidemt youd be crushed like a tin can! Now american cars.... Thats another story. Good ole 60s-70s cars were built better than cars today imo, they just arent as safe - they were more solid though.

There's a reason why companies go to China to build things. Its cheaper. They have a billion people they can hire for $.20/hr and for every 1 person who wont do that job 2 more will. Just like the Mexican problem we have here in America. Americans complain about them taking their jobs but the fact is no American (either due to pride or stupidity) wont do the job and companies know this and they know they have 20 million illegal immigrants who will. Illegals keep the wage down for the rest of the working class but people fail to see that. Same thing in China, why would any company pay someone $8/hr to make something if they can pay someone else $2/hr.

I don't know if this thread is more about iMovie or Apple.

To the OP, the thread would be more valuable to me as an amateur video editor if the thread were titled "iMovie bugs and Limitations" and the list you placed on page three was in the original post.

While your opinions of Apple's support are indeed valid, there is not much you can do about it. What you can do, however, since you seemed to have put the app though the paces, is share your findings and help the rest of us make the most of the app, and what it actually is capable of doing. At the very least it could help us decide if we want to spend the 5 bucks on it or not.

Even consumer grade desktop editors have problems with hi res images. There are recommended pixel dimensions to use, and this is common across all programs and platforms. It's just not reasonable to expect a handheld device to out perform desktops or laptops in this area. It's just common sense, and I'm glad that apple didn't try to insult my intelligence and dumb down the app itself.

Still, your complaints are valid in general. It's ironic that in some cases, Apple is doing the same thing as it's nemesis Adobe. I just choose tom spend less energy worrying about what I don't have control over, and more energy in using the products the best way they will benefit me.

This is kind of why I didn't jump in and buy iMovie when it was available. I wanted to see people's reactions, how the program worked and what "issues" where prevalent. As some have said, I am sure Apple will update it to fix problems when enough people complain. It seems to be their MO.

Lots of people complain = We need to fix it.

Back to the topic....

I've also had issues with iMovie. I cut together a solid 10 minutes of fairly heavily edited production, only to have iMovie crash on launch. If I reinstall, I'm fairly certain my project files will go with them.

Anyone find a fix yet?

Has anyone tried in airplane mode? It seems to me, if you can limit any other functions that are using the processor, then iMovie would be more stable.

Let me explain why I'm mad over a stupid $5 app okay?

  • iPad wifi problem- apples response? No update in almost 3 months

  • I don't have problems.

[*]iPhone 4 reception issue- your holding it wrong. Oh we will fix how many bars are displayed in an update.

The update will obviously not fix anything, but did you really notice the problem before it got publicized? Has it actually affected YOUR usage?

[*]iPhone 4 proximity issue- no response on this one yet.

    This needs to be fixed.

[*]iPhone glass durability- buy a case...

Umm...yeah? You probably should buy a case if you think it's likely you're going to drop an expensive piece of electronics made out of glass. Are you now going to tell Apple their Macbook Pro's aren't sturdy enough because they won't handle a fall? Take care of your crap and either be careful with it or get a case. Not a big deal.

[*]IPhone 4, iMovie- can't include 10+ pics, don't include them, export in a lower resolution.

VERSION 1.0 CTFD.

It seems apples stance has gone from " think different " to " use different ". I like to buy products that work for me, not products that I have to work for. Why doesn't the iPhone 4 just work?

Get another phone and reevaluate your sentiment.

I called apple's facetime line the other day and facetime failed to work. It took 45 minutes of the apple rep passing me to a senior rep to somehow reactivate my facetime through text message. Yes, the rep had to reactivate my facetime by SMS.

You mean they had a problem and they fixed it? No way! How terrible! Yes, I do get your point, but seriously, sometimes problems do happen. I know loads of people with iPhone 4's, and none of them had your problem.

Hell even a cheap " hurry, let's get more phones out " company like HTC has quickly fixed the glass seating problems in the EVO.

Just got rid of an HTC phone running Android. It will take a minor miracle to get me to get another one.
