I'm not going to put a SSD into my 13" until after Lion is released this summer anyway. I know there is that TRIM hack for Snow Leopard but I don't NEED a SSD until this summer anyway. Probably order the SSD and Lion at the same time to tell the truth. Hopefully the early adoption tax will be gone on the new SATA III drives by then as well.

How have you guys been installing the drive. Not physically installing it - but how are you getting your OS/Data on there? Carbon Copy Cloner? SuperDuper? TimeMachine restore? Just regular OS X install from the disc? Any special steps you took?

Another video of the macbook pro running vertex 3, opening 50 apps at once:

Do you have your vertex 3 in the main hard drive slot (for SATA 3) or is it in the optibay? Just curious as to if it gets those kind of speeds in the optibay if yours is in the SATA 3 spot.

Edit- After crunching some numbers, it seems SATA 2 only supports about 375MBs (because it's limited to 3Gbps) while the vertex 3 has read/write times in the 500mbs time which of course is more than SATA 2 can support. So I'm guessing it would be safe to assume it's in the main bay?

I just did a refresh install to avoid any issues and put my original drive in the optibay.

I just placed an order with Amazon for the same drive and I have appox. 3 weeks to decide whether to cancel due to its availability.

Aren't you guys worried a bit on OCZ's reliability on its SSDs?

Back out of stock until 4/8/2011

550 for an HD is nuts though. I'd rather just get an iPad, sheesh. It was tough for me to pull the trigger on $275 for the 120gb version - but im so glad I did.

I just can't decide if I should enable TRIM support thru 3rd party software or wait until Lion.

I wonder if it'll affect the life and performance of the drive up until then?

(1) trim hack is working perfectly with my MBP 2011 + 120gb owc ssd
noticed 1-2 secs slower boot-up but i can live with this, and no adverse performance on ssd

(2) trim on lion is for apple ssds only - the trim hack has been tested on lion by others on this forum

Its probably not worth worrying about. Most users will never stress a Sandforce drive enough to have trim problems. Plus, you are only talking about a few months until Lion arrives so the time to create an issue is minimal.

Sandforce drives have a form of hardware garbage collection, making TRIM useless. I'm sure this has been mentioned, but so many people don't seem to understand this.

I know. I've almost given up posting about this since its just a endless battle.

TRIM is working only for Apple SSD on the beta version of Lion. We have no idea what it will look like when it is released.

check the thread on trim enabler - there were a few ppl who have tested the trim enabler in lion:

Only for Apple SSD. which is why this will be useful.

i believe trim support in lion only supports apple ssds - i could be wrong, as the final version is yestnot finalised, but this is what i learnt from that thread when ppl wih the developers preview tested the trim hack in lion and confirmed that it work

if i am wrong, then brilliant - we have trim support for all in lion

I just upgraded to a 2011 13" MacBook Pro so I'll just wait until the 3's are back in stock. Thanks

Just got my 120GB vertex 3 ssd from newegg delivered and installed in my MBP 2011 13". So far no problems no beachballing like in the intel 510 ssd I read. I enabled Trim support using trim enabler worked perfectly.

I ran AJA System Test here are the results:

I/O Transactions

01.0 516.7 509.0

Loving this drive :D

EDIT: why am I a chipotle BBQ snack wrap?

I installed the vertex 3 on my 2011 15" 2.2 and ran the same tests after enabling TRIM through TRIM Enabler. My speeds are roughy 490/450, slower than yours.. And sometimes when I run, its 400/400 - strange... What did you do exactly to get 500+??

I did a fresh install with the vertex 3 in the standard hdd slot with sata6.

confused..
