Anyone notice that newegg jacks up the shipping price for the larger Vertex 3 drives? 120G is $2.99 shipping, but the bigger (and obviously MUCH HEAVIER) 240GB and 480GB are $5.99. Now, three bucks is no big deal, but it's the principle.

Maybe it is to insure themselves. I don't think they explicity say their stuff is insured, but I can bet if it's lost in shipping then NewEgg has to pay for that. Even if it is stolen off your porch it should be covered by NewEgg even though technically it should not be. The 240gb and 480gb are pretty damn expensive.

I was about to order the 120 when I got the availability email this evening but decided against.

I'm going to give it a little time and see.

I am talking about an article related to the new Sandforce controller and its hardware level garbage collection making trim unnecessary. If the article you listed is in fact accurate, why has Apple recently enabled support for trim in their OS once they started making BTO options for SSDs?

Because the Macbook Pro doesn't ship with a sandforce SSD. Also apple have been doing BTO SSDs for a while.

Just got my OCZ Vertex 3 240GB SSD, works really well in my 2011 MPB 13" (base model) with 8GB RAM :)

Just need to setup a BootCamp partition to enable future firmware updates for the SSD.

I haven't done any special steps e.g SMC etc. Not sure if they are required since the SSD appears to be working fine.

240GB?! Nice! I didn't think they were shipping yet?
Where did you get it from and for how much if you don't mind me asking?

Can you run some benchmarks on it? Would love to see how it messures up to the 120GB ones.

Regards,
Simon

just ordered 240gb install kit from maxupgrades

I called to make sure they are in stock (the person answering the phone said that they had plenty) so I placed an order.

the 240gb vertex 3 plus the maxupgrades install kit runs for $629 before tax.. not exactly a deal but hey, it's available.

So is this drive better than the drive Intel just released?

Faster?...yes. Better?...depends on what you want out of the drive. Many say that Intel has better reliability and will pay extra for it. The $/GB on the Intel is better at this point and time as well. Based on the opinions of those that have the Vertex 3 on these forums (no compatibility issues and super fast speed), if I had a SATA III capable MBP I would/will get the Vertex 3.

anyone getting beach balls with the vertex 3? I am... not super often, but enough to be annoying. suggestions welcomed... tried all the obvious stuff (fresh install, pram reset, etc).

lol not at all i think he meant he gets paranoid comparing his boot times to other ssds. SSD boot times are 4+ times faster than a 7200rpm HDD

Ok, let's not go nuts here. Boot times are significantly faster, but not 4 or more times faster. I just got a 17" i7 with the standard 750mb drive and it boots in 25 sec. I don't think it will boot in 6 sec when I install my Crucial C300 this weekend. I would expect maybe 18-20 sec.

Just keepin' it real.

My 15" quad-core i7 with the 5400 drive boots in 19 seconds on the factory fresh image. After my Time Machine image it is at 24 seconds. Check out the video of the guy booting and starting 10 apps in like 20 seconds.

Do you have any other problems besides beach balls? What are your stats? Is the connected confirmed sata3?

No other issues, rebuilt OS and did not enable TRIM a couple of hours ago, so far so good - no beachballs. Others have replied in this and another thread that it's TRIM and that looks to be true.

As far as stats go, the boot as super fast on par with what others have posted. My machine is a 2.2 version of the 17" with 8GB of 1333 speed RAM. The Vertex is the 240 model. Here are my disk stats from xbench:

my old 2010 mbp with stock 320gb 5400rpm hdd would boot in 25secs
my owc 120gb will boot in 7-9secs

so at least x3 in my case

has anyone received a 240gb kit from maxupgrades yet?

seems like the trim hack does not play ball with the sandforce drives..lol
as mentioned trim in sandforce drives is beneficial but not essential

p.s
im still riding it out before copping one of these bad bois
will wait till owc drives come out, prices fall, and lion to come out
once the 240gb sf2000 ssds hit the $450 mark.. im buying one and selling my owc ssd... owc ssds are rare in the uk, so hopefully get a good price on fleabay

p.s.s - do not by an ocz ssd on the ebay as new, since ocz will not honour the warranty as they only cover the end user, the warranty only stands if the drive is brought from an authorized dealer, or basically anywhere besides ebid places like ebay

I would argue over how beneficial it is on Sandforce drives, I personally couldn't find a difference when I heavily benchmarked my Friends drive.

Someone asked this earlier in the thread, but I don't believe anyone has answered.

Do you guys with Early 2011 MBPs and Vertex 3 have issues with waking from inactivity (auto timer) sleep?

My Early 2011 13" i5 with a Vertex 2 (v1.32) works fine with hibernation and user-induced sleep (closing lid, clicking menu, etc.). But if the MBP goes to sleep on its own (timeout) it has issues waking. Freezing, blank screen, etc. 100% repeatable, and an issue I think the OWC drives based on the same SF controller had (still have?).

If the Vertex 3 is free from these problems, then that alone is reason enough for me to upgrade!

Waking from sleep works flawlessly in both cases (auto sleep & lid close). It's instantaneous . I have not hibernated yet, so someone else will have to speak to whether or not that works.
