Totally agree, re: all-in-one. Desktop-only computing seems so... Why?
The 27" 5K monitor relative to the overall price. When the original 5K iMac came out, there wasn't much selection (if any) for the same size/resolution/quality of monitor. That same dynamic will be in place with a 30" 6K monitor. Who's selling those right now? And for how much?

Also, the point of the colorful iMac was trying to make computers friendly and accessible to get people online; nobody who is entering computing is going to buy an iMac.
You’re right. They’re WAY more likely to get some mobile mac or, actually far more likely still to get an iPad.

I Doubt about M1. iMac have to be more powerful or another M variant, M1 was designed for power efficency and control performance per watt. MiMac maybe introduce M1X or somthing like that.
The M1 already outperforms every iMac made. They could go the “increase cooling capacity” route with it like they did with the MacBook Pro, and add some I/O. They’ve already shown a willingness to offer a less performant chip in a lower priced model (with the MacBook Air) so it wouldn’t be surprising to me at all if they went with the M1 in a lower tiered iMac.

Actually, I’d have to check the graphic capabilities of the M1’s currently out. Could they drive a screen of the type that has been rumored? Also, I really WOULD like an earlier look at the next generation of Apple Silicon, but preparing myself for just a repurposing of the M1… actually, I’m preparing myself for no iMacs on Tuesday :)

Colours are good but these are very washed out which I do not like. White (not silver) would be nice.

It is a tough call. On one hand we have the historical records of supplies drying prior to new releases. On the other how accurate are Apple’s claims that they are not being effected by Silicon Shortages?

Certainly has the possibility of being a relatively substantial event.

I really hope Apple does something interesting with the iMac. At this point the M1 (hopefully M1X) gives them basically infinite design possibilities. Just a large screen, with an awesome floating hinge that can hopefully support Apple Pencil input.

If that’s what floats your boat, I guess.

Personally, I prefer spending my days using my iMac, not opening it up to swap components.
Well, I spend most of my time working as well. Adding RAM takes the time of a restart plus maybe 5 minutes if you’re being extremely careful. A new drive is a more involved process, but if you’re going from a fusion drive to an NVME, you’ve just added new life and new speed to your system. The advantage is that you’ve extended the time you keep and use what you have instead of buying the latest thing every year. Save on a lot of waste and expenditure that way.

I still use a 2015 mbp, with the ssd upgraded to 2TB. My wife uses a 2013, the original SSD was dying, so she uses my old 1TB drive. She went to that after her 2016 keyboard died, for the second time, and Apple wanted to charge to fix it. The 2013 runs faster and is more reliable.

Can’t upgrade that an M1 at all, even knowing that previous options were quite limited.

Please, no. Those colors look hideous... Making the iMac look like a toy isn't going to play well, I'm afraid...

Okay, okay, enough dislikes. If they made the accessories match, I could see this working. Pink keyboard, pink mouse, pink cables...

Maybe throw in a Hello Kitty here and there?
So you can buy the Space Gray or Silver. They’ll have a sedate option or two, as they always do. Nobody is putting gun to your head and making you buy it in pink or whatever.

This is a relatively easy prediction. I expect to see new Apple Silicon Macs at almost every event for the next 18 months. New iMacs now, announce pro laptops at WWDC, perhaps processor upgrades in the fall, with the rest following next year. The Apple Silicon Macs have been very successful and it is in Apple’s interest to push them as much as they can, as often as they can.

Pro XDR stand is “spring loaded”.. new imac with new stand. Starting at low $3999.

A colorful phone, sure. But why a computer? I want it black or dark grey.
I was not an Apple computer user at the time but they had colorful G3 series computers in the late 90's right after Steve Jobs took over as CEO again. They look like they will still have silver (current iMac color) and a slate color, going by the picture at the top of this article. I don't buy Rose or Green or Blue iPhones (or anyone else colored electronics) but I don't care that they exist or that other people do want them. It doesn't hurt me if a company has options for colors, as long as they have a few of the boring ones that I personally prefer, and evidently they do.

Funny enough, I connect a MBP to an iMac and work off the iMac display as main monitor, with wireless keys and trackpad. Overkill? Certainly. But I had the combo, so... Plus, when I'm not leveraging the iMac's display, the kids use it.

A MacBook Air + a moderately priced display is about iMac territory, price-wise. I think there is a legit market for a consumer-priced, Apple branded monitor for those of us who appreciate the flexibility of a portable but find times when a larger display is needed.
I remember in 2012 or 2013 grumbling about the cost of a MacBook Air and a Thunderbolt Display.

I would kill for those prices to return (I think they have with the lower end machines to some extent).

That's what the VESA mount version is for. Put it anywhere you want. I love mine.
How about selling the next iMac and NOT having to order it VESA capable at the time of purchase?

Such a pain for those who aren't sure they want it and need the flexibility for the future.
