Still love my iPhone and Mini iPad as always but I’m still jumping on a PC/Server when I need to do more.
And, that’s perfectly fine. There are some markets where the number of customers are so small, it doesn’t make financial sense to try to compete against all the PC companies with something that’s not “just another interchangeable PC”.

Hah, that's funny. Along those lines, I thought I'd hate the Apple Pencil, but am now annoyed at the apps that don't support it. *shrug* It's a potentially powerful tool. (Was steve wrong?)
Nah, I don’t think he was wrong. A “stylus” back then was something that needed to be hard and pointy enough to deform the screen on a single touch device. No one had fingers appropriately pointy enough to make the UI fun to use :) And, due to the technology multi-touch wasn’t even possible. If TODAY’S tech was available back then, I’m sure he wouldn’t have had a problem with it.

Then maybe Mac is not for you.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think the majority of Mac owners are happy paying the price because 1) the materials are high quality and 2) some of us just love macOS and would rather spend more $ than use Windows.

If you gave me a choice---give up your iPhone or Mac, I would switch to Android very, very fast.
Yeah it truly is and I’m not arguing that for a second I’m funny enough the opposite I would never go Android. Being a engineer for almost 20 years I really want to get into MacOS but just can’t ever get into it. Have more Linux in the house than Windows. Probably make my coworkers heads spin in that all my Linux VMs run on HyperV but HyperV is phenomenal at running Linux with the right in place.

I guess I like to tinker too much. Much of what Apple does in a just works fashion I do/emulate myself and it’s what I enjoy. I will say Homebridge/Hubitat has been a godsend because I like the HomeKit ecosystem in design and concept but I hate how restricted it is without having some middlemen in place.

If the iMac isn’t outrageous for decent specs I would get one just to try to mess with it more. When I can pick up more components/upgrades/home automation and have money to spare it’s hard to go for.

People always talk about longevity of Macs and I don’t see it because I have my laptop from high school still in working order with more RAM and a decent SSD than most Macs. Did I have to reload the OS from time to time sure but I have no issue doing those things. I don’t even use that computer more of a running joke that it’s still chugging along.

Stupid thing is everyone is going non upgradable. I have rebuilt so many 2012 MacBook Pros for friends and they are awesome but few want to bother with it anymore. My new Zenbooks are great machines but very limited what I can do to upgrade in the long run. Still haven’t had a single system die on me they usually end up going to a family member/friend in need.

Now if they get to the point where there is a legitimate route to run Windows Arm and native boot Linux on these M1 I would really be excited to tinker with one.

OMG! You are right. I was 'just joking', but was being a HUGE butt head. DOH...

Fixed. That was stupid, apologies to all...
Naaah, no apologies needed. After all, there ARE places nice and not nice in the world, and by varying degrees from "heavenly" to "the other-hole placedly". And it's mostly humans by their actions or permissiveness, who either make it happen or allow it to happen. It is what it is in the world, and there's nothing wrong with acknowledging the truth.

And downvotes are pretty much for sale anyway.

Come on, people! Bring me the downvotes hard and fast. Pack 'em in two by two like how Noah brought the animals onto the ark. I have a bet going on this post and if I win (hint: I think my chances are excellent), I'm gonna get me a new iPad AND Apple Pencil!

It’s why fashion designers are bringing back the worst aspects of 80s clothing and hair. Because clowns make (some) people happy.
Personally, I loved leg warmers, poofy sleeves, and "mall hair" on the girls. And the dark war-paint mascara combined with the rouge, wowza! Those were some hot styles and the girls knew how to rock them!

I'm a guy, so mostly I wore long sleeve shirts, ties, slacks. And I wore workout clothing, but only in the health club. I wasn't one of those guys wearing sweatpants in the bank or hardware store, lol! So mostly I still dress like it's the 80s!

Oh wait, I don't really wear that complicated stuff during Covid. Now it's blue jeans and t-shirts. And I don't go to the health club, not with all those muzzled, sweaty people, they look like rabid hamsters forced to run on treadmills by their sadistic owners, yuck!

But yeah, jeans and t-shirts are easy to wash and not so complicated before that all-important Zoom call...

Color iMacs are fine, but not pastels. The metallic red mazda uses? The Atlantic blue VW has? Those would be head turners...
Pastels are fine. But yeah, that metallic red that Mazda has? That's gorgeous!

Remember, I'm asking you for your downvotes! Downvote me like I just now insulted your hometown, your childhood soccer team, your dog, cat, fluffy bunny rabbit, sister, and newborn baby! Downvote me like I just insulted the awful choice of linen for suit jackets and other 1980's Miami Vice TV show clothing styles. Downvote me like I insulted or complimented Apple; whichever makes you mad! Downvote me for wearing a mask in public! Downvote me for saying I don't think masks work! Downvote me for getting a vaccine! Downvote me for supporting the US Constitution! Downvote me like I insulted your dear sweet grandma, may she rest in peace...or not, if she's still alive, d'oh!

Bring it on; I'm gonna get me some new technology, LOL!

Won't it be funny if Apple just updated the iMac with M1 innards and nothing else? So far Apple hasn't made a new design change + M1 at the same time.

That would be fine with me, their iMac design changes generally just make it harder to service. A half-inch thick or 2-inches thick, it really doesn't affect the arrangement of a desk all that much.

yeah but what is a MBP but a computer with a monitor built into it. ;)
When you toss in a battery, it's portable and battery-operated!

Adding RAM takes the time of a restart plus maybe 5 minutes if you’re being extremely careful.

Sure. I've put 64 GB in the iMac I'm using now.

A new drive is a more involved process, but if you’re going from a fusion drive to an NVME, you’ve just added new life and new speed to your system. The advantage is that you’ve extended the time you keep and use what you have instead of buying the latest thing every year.

I used a MacBook Pro from 2010 for almost ten years because it was the last one available with a matte screen. I upgraded RAM at least twice, and used both the spinning drive and DVD drive space for SSD storage, which I also upgraded multiple times.

Save on a lot of waste and expenditure that way.

I still sort of fail to see the downside.

It's not like a computer with non-replaceable processors, RAM and storage is worthless and needs to go in the recycling simply because it no longer cuts it for you.

Just sell it to someone who thinks it's fine, and buy a new one for a little more, no waste created.

If non-upgradeable means we can have faster, smaller, lighter and more efficient Macs I am all for it. The benefits may not be obvious from the entry-level models that have been released so far, but I sure hope they will be when there is a successor to the 12" MacBook. (Please, please, please give me an 11" MacBook Pro!)

It’s odd that you can’t see an upside to upgrading if you’ve done so so frequently. Why not just buy a 2020 iMac with a matte screen if there’s no advantage to upgrading your old machine?
The fact is, once you walk out of the store with the machine, you’ve lost a significant amount of money. Computers are not investments, they don’t increase in value, they depreciate immediately. That may not matter to you, you may not mind paying the difference between what you can sell or trade your old machine for - keeping in mind that if you have time to sell privately, you’re spending much more time with that than you would have upgrading the RAM or the drive.
I’ve spent a lot less on computers in the past 8 years than I used to. I was more in to buying new machines back in the early 2000s, but after 2015, none of the new Macs have seemed worth the price of upgrading, and in some cases seemed like an expensive downgrade.
It’s possible that Macs will make such leaps and bounds each year that it will seem logical to upgrade, but I doubt it. I imagine there will be a big jump over the next year or so when the more capable machines are finally released, then incremental upgrades after that. Why wouldn’t I want to just do the equivalent of that incremental upgrade myself, rather than to go to the trouble of buying a new machine, packing up my old one and selling it?
On the other hand, maybe there will be dramatic upgrades every year that necessitate an upgrade more often. Who knows?

I stopped upgrading the MacBook Pro because it doesn't have a retina screen, no longer runs the OS or software I want, doesn't have the interfaces I need and doesn't support functionality that has been released in the last decade. Also, the logic board seems glitchy.

This is definitely not my experience.

I have bought and sold Macs since 1993, and have typically been able to sell my existing Mac just before a new model is released (based on rumors) for close enough to the list price that I could get the upgraded model, with a fresh warranty, for about the added cost of some RAM and storage.

I wouldn’t say I’ve spent significantly more time on selling than I would have on researching and installing upgrades.

I did hold on to my PowerBook G4 for years because the form factor was discontinued, then the 2010 MacBook Pro due to the screen and I still have the 2017 iMac because I missed the sale window, and also sort of didn't want to deal with the hassle of replacing it. I also had a 2006 Mac mini that I kept around as a media server until it became useless.

These are the four Macs I own, but of course the iMac is the only one still in use. (I guess, technically, I also own an old 9600 since the person I sold it to gave it back to me instead of throwing it out.)

I am very much looking forward to an M-based replacement for the four-port 13”, or even better, a new 12” or 11”.

Other than those, I have lost very little on the Macs I have sold, probably 20-30 in total, with one exception:

I had a loaded 2017 MacBook Pro 15" that was impossible to get rid of after the slightly improved keyboards were announced in 2018. It took ages and I lost closer to $1500 on that piece of garbage.

Of course I would prefer having the option to upgrade, but definitely not at the expense of faster, smaller, lighter and more efficient, not even if it is only a marginal improvement.

Come to Papa. Glad to see L0vetodream mentioning this.
Here are the specs and pricing that I expect for the base model 24” iMac:
$1299 starting price with at least 4K display. Maybe 4.5K
M1 chip
256GB SSD
8GB RAM (soldered on)
Two USB-4 ports.
One cooling fan.

Not happy if the base decontented model is 1299 for those specs in 2021! My assumption is that they will price the entry level imac closely matching that spec at 1099 or maybe hit the 'magical' psychological $999USD price point if they are willing to take a small margin hit to sell more mind share gaining base devices.

Remember Apple needs a model to replace the 1099 potato 1080p intel i3 imac for the casual/boomer market who just want a "basic" Apple all-in-one. 1299 starting point will scare away a huge market of potential buyers.

I don't want to second guess savant bean counter Timmy but an aggressive starting price would be the most attractive option for long term ROI especially with the v1rus kick starting the work home craze and more people will be looking to purchase a premium work all-in-one desktop.

Also to add the potential hit in margins with a lower MSRP imac would be reclaimed multiple times over with the increased sales thus more apple tv+ subs and other subscription based income.

Hope my predictions come true on Tuesday.......

Those USB ports are amusing in that picture. Unit is too thin to support required depth of them.

IF they’re that thin, then you can probably kiss USB-A ports goodbye, and any USB-C would likely be relocated to a side or the bottom edge.

Anyway … two more days!

So no new iMacs till 2022 then?
Good point. I was assuming that small press events may be allowed by summer, but that may be off the table.

Big picture — going forward, what would be the advantage of returning to live press events? The video events don’t seem to have lowered the excitement level over their products. Less stress, less cost, and less environmental impact. What’s your opinion?

Hope they have a 32” 6K iMac at some point in black or a darker gray than space gray. Although space gray is kinda all over the place depending on which Apple product. But darker than the iMac Pro.

I think I’m more likely to upgrade my MacBook Pro before my 5K iMac, though. Although lately I’ve been using my iMac even more because work has been busy and I like having multiple displays at my workstation. For that reason I’ll probably just hold out for the M2 in a redesigned 14” MBP with that new display tech and get a M3X or M4X 6K iMac down the road. I’d rather have longer battery life and a cooler lap in a MBP than a faster iMac right now. Buying that early 2019 5K iMac with the i9 and Vega 48 was the right choice.

I personally am not a fan of all-in-one. But that being said, it's perfect for like my elderly mother-in-law whose iMac is perched on a desk in her bedroom - not intimidating, not half a dozen USB devices running, and the display is good for setting default fonts to a readable size and excellent for Zoom these days. Also schools.

I won’t comment on the pastel colors, but can hopefully provide a different perspective to those people saying they don’t understand who buys an iMac.

I own a law firm, and for my hourly employees, they are the most practical Apple computer.

I don’t want them taking work home off the clock, so it eliminates that problem. Then pre M1 Mac mini, the performance of an iMac was substantially better. Moreover, the cost of all the different components ended up rendering the iMac a more affordable solution. I know many other law firms that are stocked with iMacs for the same reason. They’re great business computers.

obviously new imac is going to be his and hers 12.9" iPad Pros seamlessly sitting side by side on a magic magnetic mac stand.

A new drive is a more involved process, but if you’re going from a fusion drive to an NVME, you’ve just added new life and new speed to your system.
Heck, even the difference from replacing the HDD part of my Fusion Drive with a SATA SSD in my 2014 5K iMac back in early 2019 was drastic.

Yes, taking the display off and putting it back for such repairs is time-consuming and stressful, but considering that the HDD was quickly aging, it was well worth it in that it bought this machine at least a couple more years — because I’m not buying an iMac in this design again for both aesthetic and practical reasons.

Pro XDR stand is “spring loaded”.. new imac with new stand. Starting at low $3999.

A colorful phone, sure. But why a computer? I want it black or dark grey.
Maybe because it would add a ray of colour amongst a rather repeated dull space. Blue please in iPhone 12 mini blue or iPad Air 4 pastel blue please.
